Boutique Garden Cruise of the British Isles with Phil Dudman Phil Dudman is a horticulturist, designer, writer and broadcaster. His recent book, ‘Down-to-Earth Garden Design’ characterizes Phil’s approach to gardening; easy, straight-forward and never complicated. Phil is a seasoned traveller too, having travelled extensively across Europe and Asia in search of great sites, great food, great people and of course great gardens. Following short stints in architecture and business and a few years fronting a Sydney rock ‘n’ roll band, he finally succumbed to his true horticultural calling in his late 20’s. In the past 20 years, Phil has contributed to many of Australia’s leading gardening magazines, has written three books for ABC Books and worked as a TV presenter on channel DAY 6 Sunday 12 July 2020 At sea nine’s Garden Gurus. One of the main events in the English horticultural calendar and boasts fine displays of flowers, plants, trees and interesting garden layouts. Phil will ensure that you explore all areas of this wonderful show. The rest of the day will be free for independent activity. Tonight we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner to celebrate the start of our tour and to formally introduce Phil Dudman. DAY 8 Tuesday 14 July, 2020 St Marys, Isles of Scilly Today we are in for a treat with a visit to the gorgeous sub-tropical Abbey Gardens. We arrive in St Mary’s, from where we will take a boat to Tresco to visit this beautiful garden built in the 19th century around the ruins of a Benedictine abbey. It is home to species across the world’s Mediterranean climate zones. This garden has won many prizes and will be full of interest for our group. DAY 9 Wednesday 15 July, 2020 Holyhead, Wales Today we arrive at Holyhead, on the Isle of Anglesey off the north-west coast of Wales. We will travel to visit Bodnant Gardens. One of the finest and best loved gardens in Britain. Its 80 acres is a delight to visit any time of the year. It features wide terraces that lead down from the house on the top of the hill to the valley. DAY 10 Thursday 16 July, 2020 Liverpool, England This morning we dock in Liverpool. We visit Croxteth Hall Country Park. Once a fantastic country estate and ancestral home of the Molyneux family. The new garden was a blank canvas when they moved in 2016, with high granite walls to create a good microclimate being very close to the Irish Sea. Helen started with a completely clean slate, having to replace existing soil with lovely new soil. We will expect to see a garden filled to the brim with great beauty with roses, alliums and dioramas. DAY 12 Saturday 18 July, 2020 Belfast, Northern Ireland We dock in Belfast this morning. Belfast is one of the great industrial and commercial cities of the Victorian era. We see Donegall Square the hub of Belfast. Bordering the Square are Yorkshire House and the Linden Hall Library two grand buildings. We see City Hall, the Grand Opera House and St Anne’s Cathedral and learn about the Troubles that blighted the cities growth for thirty years. This afternoon we travel to visit Mount Stewart House and Garden.
