POPE SAINT PIUS X AUGUST 21 Born poor and humble of heart Undaunted champion of the Catholic faith Zealous to restore all things in Christ Crowned a holy life with a holy death Inscription on his tomb in the crypt of the St. Peter’s Basilica Italian Pope Throughout his priestly life he held numerous roles bringing a richness of pastoral experience to his papacy. On his first encyclical he laid down the sole aim of his pontificate: “to restore all things in Christ“, condemning Modernism as the root of faithlessness. In 1905 he issued a decree inviting the faithful to receive Holy Communion frequently and even daily. Pope Pius X. ST. MARY MACKILLOP AUGUST 8 “Mother Mary knew that behind the ignorance, misery and suffering which she encountered there were people, men and women, young and old, yearning for God and His righteousness. Her story reminds us of the need to welcome people, to reach out to the lonely, the bereft, the disadvantaged.” Pope John Paul II Homily Beatification Mass of Mary MacKillop Australia’s First Saint In her youth she was drawn to religious life. Founded a new community of women, the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Sacred Heart, also known as the Josephite, who have been setting up schools all over Australia and New Zealand, bringing education to those who could not afford it, working in orphanages, with unmarried mothers and amongst aborigines. ST. MARIA GORETTI JULY 6 “Not all of us are expected to die a martyr’s death, but we are all called to the pursuit of Christian virtue. This demands strength of character…a constant, persistent, and relentless effort is asked of us right up to the moment of our death. This may be conceived as a slow, steady martyrdom.” Pope Pius XII, Homily at the Canonization of Saint Maria Goretti Italian Peasant Girl At the young age of 12, died a martyr to preserve her purity. Born into poverty, lived a virtuous life born out of her deep love for God, stabbed by a young man when she prevented him from violating her. Her courageous resistance, heroic death, the conversion of her murderer and canonization with her mother and her murderer in attendance makes her life story a story of victory, remaining us of Jesus victory on the cross.
