Hellooooo Roxbury, What’s Happening!! ~ Enjoy Roxbury’s weekly community events listing for the week of October 18, 2018 ~ View this newsletter each week on the home page at www.roxburynj.us Roxbury Lady Gaels Travel Softball 2019 Open Tryouts, Ages 4-16 Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Dell Avenue Field #1. This is for the travel division Roxbury Softball Association. For ages 8 and under (born 2010 and younger), tryouts are 9:30 - 10:30 am.For ages 10 and under (born 2008-2010), tryouts are 10:30 - 11:30 am.Please email roxburysoftballassociation@gmail.com if you are interested in trying out or if you have any questions. Soccer Referee Course For new referees only. The Roxbury Soccer Club will be hosting a Grade 9 Referee Certification Course on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at the Senior Center at 72 Ey- land Avenue, Succasunna. The course runs from 8:30am - 5pm. To be eligible to be a referee, you must be at least 14 years of age by the date of the test. Please contact Roxbury Soccer Club Referee Coordinator at marcus3@optimum.net with questions. Recreation Children’s Bowling League Bumper Bowling for kids in K-3rd; Regular Bowling for kids in 4th-8th. Dates are now through March 27th, 4pm-5:15pm at Circle Bowl. 21 sessions of two games each. Register in-person only at Rox Rec. $10 to register, and $6 per week. Fall Basketball Registration is open for Rec Basketball program, for children ages K-12th grade. Roxbury Senior Citizens Club The club meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Open to all Roxbury residents who are 55 years of age or older. Meetings are held at the Horse- shoe Lake Seniors Center on Eyland Avenue. Doors open at 10am for socialization and refreshments. Meetings start at 11am.For club information call 973-398-3428. For upcoming trips and events call Renee at 973-945-2759. Roxbury Social Services The Roxbury Food Pantry is accepting frozen turkey donations for Thanksgiving by November 14th. Items in need are: paper towels, tissues, napkins, toilet paper, dish detergent, and laundry detergent. Buy-A-Brick Campaign to Help Improve Main Street Roxbury Township’s Main Street Committee invites you to help support their fundraising efforts to continue the beautification of Main Street in Succasunna. Memorial/honorary engraved bricks are still available for sale. The bricks are installed in the courtyard surrounding the Victorian Clock by the Gazebo at the Library. Remember a loved one. See the final resting place of Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers, Lenape people, a NJ Governor and many of the families who have streets named after them throughout Roxbury (Condit, Salmon, Meeker, etc.). Hear stories told by costumed “ghost” characters speaking graveside under the moonlight. Come explore the hallowed grounds of this historic church which served as a hospital for soldiers during the Revolutionary War (General George Washington came to visit) and where U.S. President Martin Van Buren came to worship with NJ Governor Mahlon Dickerson. Tours leave every 5 minutes, rain or shine. Please bring a flashlight. Tickets are $5 in advance or $7 on day of event and include cider and donuts after tour. There will be new gravesite characters and some spooky surprises too! Great for Scouts, youth groups, history buffs and anyone who likes getting into the Halloween spirit. Roxbury Community School – Kids Programs (2018/2019) Colorguard for Grades 5-9 Register now for the 2018/2019 Colorguard program through the Roxbury Community School. This year-long program will focus on learning 2-3 minute competitive colorguard routines using rifles and flags. Students will learn basic and intermediate colorguard skills that will be showcased at dance competitions in the spring. No previous experience is necessary but a strong dance background is encouraged. This program is open to all Roxbury and non-Roxbury residents. Tuition cost is $300 per student. Kujenga and Robotics After-School for Grades 1-6 Register your elementary student for Kujenga robotics and coding classes through the Roxbury Community School. Kujenga is an educational entity designed to bring robotics, coding, engineering and science skills to all students in order to prepare them for the technology-driven future. Kujenga is here to open a world of imagination and creativity for your child while they learn design and engineering principles as well as science, math, and coding. Mad Science After-School for Grades 1-6 Registrations are now being accepted for fall Mad Science after-school programs at the five elementary schools in district. Join their hands-on, one-hour science programs that are themed around a particular area of science. This fall Grades 1-4 will see if they are smarter than a mad scientist and Lincoln/Roosevelt students will learn Brixology which sets the found for the next generation of engineers! NJEA Conference Camp for Ages 5-10 Looking for more Mad Science and something to do over the NJEA Break? Then look no further! Young Rembrandts introduces drawing lessons that will excite your budding artist. Learning to draw basic shapes is an essential building block for every artist. Our lady bug and gumball machine provide excellent practice for drawing circle shapes. From there, our lessons will become more challenging. The clown puppet and Frankenstein monster are great introductions to character drawings. This two and half hour workshop from 6:30-9:00 p.m. at Roxbury High School is designed as an upbeat and realistic assessment of the voice over industry including areas of growth, unique opportunities, common pitfalls, and mistakes. Yoga for Beginners – Join this beginner class that introduces you to the fundamental principles of alignment and breath work in a flow of postures linked together by the breath. Participants will be introduced to yoga postures through step-by-step verbal description and demonstration. If you have never tried yoga, this is the class for you! It is designed to meet the needs of those new to yoga as well as those seeking continued understanding of basic yoga poses. This course is ideal for teens and adults. My 3 Sons Family Tutor for SAT/ACT -- Roxbury Community School is offering a comprehensive and combined SAT and ACT tutoring program throughout 2018/2019 that addresses BOTH the SAT and the ACT entrance exams, at a cost lower than most single preparation courses. My 3 Sons Family Tutoring has helped MANY students in Roxbury and in other towns to optimize their scores on both tests, gain entry into top-level universities and, in many cases, earn scholarship funding. This My 3 Sons course will help seniors prepare for as many as six admissions tests before college applications are due.
