County Sligo/Rosendaelsche The club was approached by Lars-Peter Reumer from Rosendaelsche Golf Club in the Netherlands with regards to a possible link up between the two clubs since we are celebrating 125 years in existence this year and they are marking 125 years next year. In 2017 Lars-Peter cycled 1600 km of the Irish countryside and coastline for 22 days, playing 20 courses. He arrived in Belfast and cycled 60 miles to Castlerock Golf Club. From there he went anti-clockwise around the coastline playing in Sligo, Galway, Kerry, Dublin before completing his adventure at Royal County Down. Lars-Peter took out overseas life membership of County Sligo in 2018. The club are hosting thirty-seven members, 20 male and 17 female, from Rosendaelsche in June. There will be a competition between the two clubs on Friday June 7th and we will have entertainment lined up for that night. Our visitors are staying in the Yeats Country Hotel for three nights. In 2020 members from County Sligo will pay a return visit to Rosendaelsche. We invited Lars-Peter to write and inform us about his renowned club and herein we share his most informative piece. MMcN.
Dear members of Co. Sligo, Rosses Point, With golf not a major sport in The Netherlands, in 2010 I was privileged to be invited to join Rosendaelsche Golf club (further RG) in Arnhem. A tradition-bulked club, where in the old days the number of potential joiners would far exceed the number of leavers. Letter to Although we are still a private member club, we do encourage guests to come and play our beautiful course. We are one of the few golf course without a caddy master or tee time reservations; “play as you come” could almost be considered a religion. Founded in 1895, it is (after Royal Hague and UGC De Pan) the third oldest club the in NL, but has nonetheless the oldest holes in NL. The original 9 hole course was designed by Mr A.A. Delcourt van Krimpen, in the 70s to be stretched out to an 18 hole layout by design of English architect Frank Pennink. Our club has hosted the (European Tour event) Dutch Open in 1984, which was won by Bernard Langer. Our club logo consists of a (pre-brexit picked) Tudor Rose; the club members motto “qui va adroit ne manque”, which casually translated means that "those who go straight, don’t miss”: An advice better to take at heart on our course, which can be narrow, long and tricky: Truly a very different experience for members of Co. Sligo, Rosses Point. Some reviewers have stated, "RG is heathland golf at its very best, from played over undulating forested terrain with heather-clad ridges creating the odd semi-blind tee or approach shot.” There is no water to be found (other than the occasional shower), which is quite unique considering large parts of NL are below sea level. Our club (as all clubs in The Netherlands) have one governing body Lars (“Bestuur" or board), which oversees both female (374/38%) and male (622/62%) members, as well as all activities in and around the club. This is different from your female/male presidents and female/male captain system. Now 1 year in function, I was elected as vice chairman/treasurer; a regular term in office is 4 years. At times almost a real job, but lots of fun to see the club from both the inside and outside.
Besides mainly club championships and traditional 'silver' matches, most regular club matches are mixed events, often played on stableford scoring. The Dutch handicap system is a complex mix of course, slope rating and stroke index, which gives us handicaps calculation up to the decimal. Golf as a science! Of our members, approximately 10% holds a single digit handicap. Both our mens and women top teams compete in the highest Dutch league. Letter to I cannot quite say, that our club is a mirror of the Dutch society. Golf in Continental Europe used to be for the happy few, but is opening up now with different formats to attract more age categories. Of the course Football is #1 by far, followed by tennis, fishing(..?) with golf at a 4th place. It would be safe to assume, that if there would be a ranking on age, golf would be first. Our club is attracting many youngsters, but people in the age group 20-45 have different members priorities. Given a further system, that newcomers first need to obtain a permission to play courses at all, this is something to work on in the coming years for our governing bodies. from As I always enjoy my trips to Ireland playing many links courses, I want to share some of the experience with some of our RG members. And what better place to introduce Irish golf and hospitality than at Co. Sligo, Rosses Point: Sláinte! Lars Let the games begin; we’re looking forward to 7 June! Lars-Peter.
D Day in the Winter league has arrived. Lots of tension on the course and banter afterwards. 9.30am start for Section 1-6
9.30am start Sect 1 -6. 12.30pm for Section 7
As we enter the final qualifying Round 7 this weekend, Round 6 resulted in many changes in the leadership of the various sections. It is interesting to note that with the exception of 1 group the qualifiers for each section is still up for grabs. Section 1: Qualifying in this section is Gary Byrne & James Barnicle, The Ryan father/son pairing, Edwards/Flaherty and the Legal Eagles Higgins/Johnson. This is the only section where all 4 qualifiers are decided. The sponsor did not make it again this year? Is it time to pass on his partner!!! In this section there was 1 day prize winner? Section 2: 3 teams have qualified congrats to them Quinn/Leonard, O’Flaherty/Arnold and Sproule/Reynolds. The last place could be decided in the match between Flanagan/Kielty and the Curley Father/Son partnership. In this section there was 1 day prize winner? Section 3: The Winter League favourites Feeney/Brady have qualified with Mc Dermot/Clifford combo. The last 2 positions are between 4 pairings. 3rd and 4th place pairing are playing the 2 qualifiers so maybe Gillen/Gilligan could sneak a qualifying place. Owens/Moylan need to win with a good score to contend for a qualifying place. In this section there was 2 day prize winners? Section 4: Rahilly/O’Connor slipped up in Rd. 6 and could fail to qualify. All other qualifying positions up for grabs. The Vogt/Tailly match with Mc Manus/Gaynor will decide a qualifying place. The Hodgson/Moylan pairing must beat Mc Manus/Reilly to secure possible qualification. In this section there was 2 day prize winners? Section 5: Parkinson/Parkinson have qualified with Feeney/Devaney. The final 2 positions are up for grabs. If Keyes/Horan win or draw this weekend they will qualify. I fancy Feeney/O’Neill to take final position. In this section there was 1 day prize winner? Section 6: Congrats to the Armstrong/Mc Elhone pairing on their qualification with the old fellas O’Sullivan and Taylor!!! With 5 teams qualifying in this section there is 7 pairings in contention for the final qualifying positions. My forecast to qualify are O’Brien/Davey, Quinlan/Mc Gonigle and the Fitzpatricks. In this section there was 3 day prize winners? The strongest section. Section 7: This is a very close section with all teams still in contention, Demmel/Burke have a bye and will qualify. Also looking good to qualify is Glacken/Brogan and the winner of match between Flanagan/Melia and Doyle/Harty. Final place should go to Mc Donnell/Lynch as they have an easy match!!! In this section there was 2 day prize winners? Favourites at this stage for Winter League 2019 is Brady/Feeney.
