Originally my April column was about visiting local quilt stores when doing
international travel. Our family was anticipating a long awaited tour of Vietnam
where I knew local quilt shops would pop up on my agenda. Well, that certainly
              didn’t happen!
Our April and May guild meetings, April sew day, May workshop and summer retreat
are all canceled. The June 2 guild meeting and potluck at St. Mark’s United
Methodist Church are still on but who knows what the near future holds for large
gatherings. Our safety is first and foremost when making these decisions. A huge thank you to
Maryam Othman and Laura Brown-Cano for all their work in preparing the summer retreat.
Additionally, much appreciation to Katha Soens who keeps our website up to date and Karen Levay
who sends email blasts and calls local active members who do not have email. Please check our
website to stay up to date with all BQG matters. BQG website link here

The show has been going on behind the scenes with board members and committees communicating
regularly. The upcoming April 20 board meeting is scheduled through Zoom. Please feel free to
reach out anytime with any questions or concerns. (president@bloomingtonquiltersguild.org)
On Tuesday, April 7 instead of meeting at Beth Shalom we’ll have show and tell on BQG Facebook.
(www.facebook.com/groups/109424215762684/) Pretend you’re standing up at a guild meeting
showing your latest project but instead post a picture and description on Facebook. Whether it’s a
UFO, community quilt, personal quilt, masks, etc. we’d love to see it! After April 7 we’ll have
“What’s Under Your Needle Today” on the BQG Facebook page. Please share your sewing projects
and keep us connected virtually! I encourage all to become a member of BQG Facebook group – it’s
been a great way to stay in touch with fellow members.
Please stay safe, healthy and happy and quilt on.

Quilts from the Heartland
Getting Ready for October
Natalie Kubat
We are continuing our planning for the Quilts of the Heartland quilt show October 9-10, 2020 at
the Monroe Convention Center. I hope you are taking advantage of the governor’s “stay home”
order to do some quilting. Now there’s no excuse to not meet our goal of having every guild
member display a quilt at the show. We want all types of quilts to display; experience doesn’t
matter! This is all about participation. Once you’ve completed your quilt (and added a label!),
you’ll want to add a sleeve to the back so it can be hung for the show. Our website has some great
instructions for making sleeves and labels on www.bloomingtonquiltersguild.org/instructions . It
doesn’t take much time, I promise!
We now have a Facebook page for the quilt show. Please take a moment to Join the page
www.facebook.com/groups/202281347538066/ so that you can receive important information and
get a sneak peak of the planning. We have 51 members so far and we’d love to see this grow. You
can also use the Facebook event page www.facebook.com/events/219620626093532/ to indicate
that you plan to attend the quilt show. We hope you will also consider participating in the 19th
Amendment Quilt Challenge www.bloomingtonquiltersguild.org/quilt-show-2020 for the quilt show.
There is also a Facebook event page for the challenge www.facebook.com/events/
231910511328949/ for those who are interested in this. As a reminder, the challenge is open to all
quilters who live within the state of Indiana. So invite those you know who aren’t guild members.
Treasure Shop
Laura Brown-Cano, Jennifer Dwiel
With all this time at home, it’s the perfect opportunity to go through our sewing rooms and find
those items we no longer need. Consider donating quilting cotton of any size, quilting related
books, notions, and patterns still in good shape to the Treasure Shop. If you’re able, please measure
and mark your fabric before you donate.
Many of us are making masks for folks in our community. We also might be spending some time
getting those UFOs done. Of course, there are scraps being made from these projects! Small scraps
are perfect for our “swimming pool.”
For now, round up those donations and hold on to them until we can figure out when we will all see
each other again. Until then, thank you! Email: treasure@bloomingtonquiltersguild.org
It’s basket time— no not Easter but for our show!
Susie Goodman
I have heard many of you are in the planning / gathering stage for your basket donation.
It would be better to have a variety so if you or your bee or group of friends are planning a basket,
please let me know. I’ll keep a list to avoid duplications. Mail to:

Jennifer and Laura informed me they have received a donation of empty
baskets which they offered to me for this project. If you need a basket for
your donation, we can help!
A tisket, a tasket, let’s fill some interesting baskets!

Heartland Quilt Challenge: As We Come Marching, Marching…
Ann Birch
Here’s a trivia question for quilters who were children of the 60s (and you know who you are…).
Who was the folk singer who became noted for the song “Bread and Roses”? Don’t remember? Click
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YsvGPj0LH0M “for the answer. “Bread and Roses” became one
of the rallying cries for women’s suffrage and garment and textile workers. The song was derived
from a poem by James Oppenheim, published in 1911. The first stanza reads:

As we come marching, marching, in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill-lofts gray
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing, "Bread and Roses, Bread and Roses.”

The poem itself was inspired by a 1910 speech by
Helen Todd, a Chicago state factory inspector and
women’s advocate, who said,
“…but woman is the mothering element in the world
and her vote will go toward helping forward the time
when life's Bread, which is home, shelter and
security, and the Roses of life, music, education,
nature and books, shall be the heritage of every
child that is born in the country, in the government
of which she has a voice.”
In those days before television and radio,
newspapers and magazines were the only “media”
available, and neither of those was particularly
useful as a voice for the “regular” person. So women
(and men) marched. And sang. By the thousands.
Songs like “Bread and Roses” and “Daughters of
Freedom” heartened the marchers and sent a
message to everyone looking on.
Look on the Library of Congress https://
www.loc.gov/item/ihas.200197395/ and see if you
can use the songs of suffrage as inspiration for your
19th Amendment quilt. Try searching the site for
“suffrage songs.” It’s a fascinating story!
If you’re not online, give Ann a call (check your guild contact list or send mail to
news@bloomingtonquiltersguild.org) and Ann can help with the information linked above.

Guild Activities
Important Member Message
Susie Goodman, Beverly Wilson, Janice Arvesen
Please give some thought on how you can support and serve in our guild. We always need helping
hands and caring hearts. Janice, Bev and Susie are working to fill the slate for next year’s officers
and committee persons. You might not be able to take a board position or even chair a committee
but possibly could offer to serve on a committee as needed. We really do need you! Because we
can’t meet in person it’s much harder than if we could start a conversation with you. So we are
starting a virtual conversation with each of you. Consider yourself personally asked. Please take
this seriously. Without helping hands we cannot keep our guild in operation. Thoughtfully consider
how you can do your part. We have a lot of fun together and it’s a good way to make new friends
and strengthen old friendships within our very large guild. We have been enriched in so many ways
by volunteering and you can too. We would love to have to join us.

Nominations for Volunteer of the Year
Tara Babcock
I am taking nomination for volunteer of the year. Each year we recognize our outstanding members
and proclaim one as volunteer of the year. Usually we nominate and vote at a meeting, but this
year, we will have to do things a little differently. For those of you with internet access, I’ve
created a Google form for you to submit nominations.
docs.google.com/forms/d/e/

If you want to just email me, that’s fine too. treasurer@bloomingtonquiltersguild.org
If you don’t have internet access phone me (consult your contact list).
Next month I will summarize the nominees and tell you how awesome they all are. The board will
talk about the best way to conduct a vote.

Financial Report
Tara Babcock
COVID 19 has wreaked havoc on our nation’s economy, but our
guild’s finances remain strong. This is partly due to the fact that
the last few years people have generously donated estate money
and fabric that we have turned into income and beautiful charity
quilts! With the cancellation of our April and May meetings, some of
our programming budget can be rolled into next year. And we have
refunded all the deposits made on the summer retreat. It may look
like the retreats lost money this year, but they did not. We have
paid deposits for 2020 and 2021.
We have over $300 remaining in our community quilt grant, if
members need to be reimbursed for supplies to make charity quilts OR making facemasks, please
turn in your receipts to Tara. Our members give so generously of their time and talents. We don’t
want anyone to suffer financially because of their charity efforts.
Our guild is a 501c3 organization. If you donate items or money to the guild, I can give you a
receipt for your taxes. Dues and fees for events do not count as donations. Also, we are tax
exempt from state taxes, so if you are buying something for the guild (meeting supplies, bulk
supplies for community efforts, etc.) I can give you the tax ID and form. We have an account at
Staples as well. If you have questions, just ask! treasurer@bloomingtonquiltersguild.org

Face Mask Project
Karen Levay
As most of you know, several institutions around the area have asked
for homemade washable face masks. Many of you have already made
masks and turned them in for distribution. There have been a
number of posts about this project on the Facebook page and the
number and ever changing suggestions meant that it is somewhat
confusing to get started. All needed materials can be obtained from
the project.
Katha Soens has worked with Nola Hartman, who began the effort, to
make sure the most recent up-to-date information is on the BQG web
page. Please look there to find the most accurate information.
www.bloomingtonquiltersguild.org/face-mask. The BQG page links to
the Bloomington Mutual Aid for Covid-19 page and you should look
there for the most up-to-date patterns and procedures. Directions change with experience and
input from the users and the makers.
Kelly Clark, from the Bloomington Mutual Aid for Covid-19 is coordinating collection and distribution
of the masks. The website patientphysicaltherapy.com/bloomington-indiana-fabric-mask-drive-
getmeppe/ has a running count of the number of masks received, delivered and who has received
them. At time of press, the team has collected well over 1400 masks from 140 volunteers. They
have been distributed to an ever-growing list of groups and institutions documented on the website.
All masks are collected using no-contact protocols and then washed, sorted, and quality-controlled
by trained medical professionals using clean handling procedures. All types of masks are accepted,
then sorted and distributed to different types of users depending on how they will be used. Please
do not distribute them directly to medical personnel.
WTIU had a short piece about the project indianapublicmedia.org/news/local-volunteers-
answering-the-call-for-masks...and-how-you-can-help-too.php?

Thank you to all those who have contributed masks.

Nola Hartman: Quilter and Volunteer
Karen Levay
Little did Nola Hartman know what she was starting when on March 15 she posted a request on the
BQG Facebook page for help making face masks for a pediatrician’s office. Requests from other
institutions (see the list in the article about face masks on page 5) came flooding in. The response
from both the quilting community and institutions requesting masks became overwhelming. Kelly

Clark, from the Bloomington Mutual Aid for Covid-19, volunteered to help coordinate the mask
drive. She set up registration mechanisms for those needing masks, those willing to make masks,
and those willing to donate money for supplies. The protocol then became: see Nola about sewing
questions and for materials and see Kelly to turn in masks or any other non-sewing related
questions. See the BQG website for more information about making masks:
www.bloomingtonquiltersguild.org/face-mask
Nola, Kelly and a few other helpers are at the Monroe County Public Library everyday at 5:30PM to
collect masks and to distribute materials.

Nola is no stranger to volunteer efforts. Just this year she represented BQG as co-lead of a group
who gave beginning quilting lessons at the Monroe County Library. She gathered a group of
volunteers who taught the students to make a nine-patch block that could be used as a mug rug.
The fabrics were from her stash and the wide variety (from florals to novelty prints) allowed the
new quilters to chose fabrics of their taste.

In January, Nola posted a request from the Wollongong Modern Quilt Guild for blocks with a tree
theme to create quilts for victims of the horrific Australian bush fires. After making 16 blocks
herself, she collected blocks from other quilters and mailed the batch of 46 off to the Wollongong
Guild.
Anyone who talks with Nola even briefly learns of her love of animals and
would not be surprised to learn that she works with the animal shelter to
foster cats and kittens and to find good homes for them. When the local
shelter began a fostering program in 2004, Nola was thrilled to be official.
She had been doing kitten rescue on her own after she added a kitten to her
own family and things began to add up! In the past few years, she has
specialized in fostering pregnant cats or cats with tiny kittens. This picture
is of the most recent mother cat, Havarti, and her four “babybel” kittens (3
black and one gray).
Nola loves basketball and theatre. She attends most of the IU basketball
games. She is on the board for Stages Bloomington, a group that offers
training and performance opportunities for young people 3rd grade to seniors in high school. (She
has been known to make a costume or two.)

Bloomington Quilters Guild Newsletter April 2020

Of course, Nola’s most obvious passion is quilting. One
of the original Bloomington Bonniacs, Nola has
completed over 70 of Bonnie Hunter designed quilts
(some of them twice). Her favorite designs are the
mystery quilts offered every November.. At the recent
Indiana Heritage Quilt Show, her Bonnie Hunter design
Emerald City quilt (to the right) won the 2020 Mayor’s
Choice Award (Heather Vanderkleed quilter.)
Nola loves scrappy quilts and also making challenging
quilts with small pieces. In addition to Bonnie Hunter,
she likes the quilts of designer Elizabeth Hartman (no
relation) and has completed at least eight of her designs

The quilt to the left (Jack’s Chain) is one of her most
recently completed tops. There are only 208 nine-
patches. Maybe this was inspired by the nine-patch
class she taught at the library! She said it only took
a few weeks as she uses Bonnie Hunter’s scrap users
system and had a head start!
