Save Mount Diablo’s 2022 Dispersed BioBlitz • 2nd year focusing on the SCU Lightning Complex • April 16th – 30th (2 weeks) at anytime • Visit burn sites with public access (following COVID-19 and park agency guidelines) • No time commitment • No trespassing on private lands – if BioBlitzing on public roads, make sure to stay on the roadside • No services in areas • Leave No Trace
50 Observations in Celebration of 50 Years! We’re giving BioBlitz shirts away in celebration of Save Mount Diablo’s 50th Anniversary! How to get a Fire Footprint BioBlitz t-shirt: 1. Upload 50 observations (different species) onto iNaturalist 2. Send a link to your iNaturalist list or download your iNaturalist list and email it to Denise Castro at dcastro@savemountdiablo.org 3. We’ll mail you a shirt and some fun swag!
SCU Lightning Complex Fire Footprint • Northern Diablo Range • 396,624 acres • 4th largest wildfire in CA history • Aug. 18th, 2020 – Oct. 1, 2020 (44 days) • Burned in 5 counties (Alameda, Contra Costa, Santa Clara, San Joaquin, Stanislaus) • Approx. 20 separate fires broken into 3 zones (Deer Zone, Canyon Zone, Calaveras Zone)

Burn Areas Deer Zone Fire • East of Mount Diablo • About 3,000 acres (similar in size to 2013 Morgan Fire) • Morgan Territory Regional Preserve – Miwok trail closed • Round Valley Regional Preserve • Los Vaquero Reservoir – Miwok trail closed

Public Roads • Many pullouts along the public roads to safely stop at • Most of the land in the area is private – no trespassing • Weak to no cell signal throughout the roads

H ow to m a ke b ette r o bse r vat i o n s • Take identifiable photos- Make sure the photo is in focus • Take photos of single species (instead of landscape photos) • Take multiple photos & from different angles • Make sure to note down the date of observation • Make sure the observation’s location is correct (can be obscured)
