MISSION VISION Bike Works promotes the bicycle as a Mobilized people. vehicle for change to empower youth Thriving communities. and build resilient communities. Healthy planet. A YEAR IN NUMBERS - 2019 100+ community partners 2,197 youth participants pounds of material 907 100% 281k bikes given away to low of scholarship diverted from income youth and adults needs met the LANDFILL 10,330 1,041 adult participants 8,038 bike shop bikes donated transactions to Bike Works Mary Lee used to commute to her job as a nurse at ESSENTIAL SERVICES Harborview on a rusty old bike. Her two children, Charlie (age 3) and Otis (age 5) started on striders and quickly learned to ride pedal bikes from Bike Works. One day, after a particularly miserable ride home on her rickety “lemon”, she decided to invest in a new bike from Bike Works. “I was worried about the cost of a brand-new bike but was able to find this refurbished one well within my price range.” Now she rides confidently with Charlie and Otis and saves time on her commute to the hospital. “When it was donated, this Scott was dirty, covered in stickers, and in fairly rough shape,” says Allie, in the Bike Works Recycle & Reuse Department. “I decided to strip the bike down to the frame, give it a thorough cleaning, and rebuild it with parts that will last a lifetime.” Our Recycle & Reuse team processed over 8,000 bike donations in 2019. They refurbished some of those bikes to sell in the shop, and funneled others to youth & adult mechanics classes to be fixed up and given away to community members. What Bike Works couldn’t use was re-donated to other cycling programs, stripped for parts, or recycled. Since March 2020, Bike Works has offered a 50% discount on bike repair services to essential workers like Mary Lee. During the COVID-19 pandemic, all bike repair services are appointment-only, and all sales are through our new web store: shop.bikeworks.org 10% OFF YOUR TOTAL PURCHASE IN VISIT OUR WEB STORE OVER $50 SHOP.BIKEWORKS.ORG WITH THE WEB CODE FTF20 Expires 10/31/2021
Over the last year, we delivered nearly a thousand bikes to youth BIKES-FOR-ALL! and families through our bike giveaway program, Bikes-for-All! Ella is a Community Builder at Seattle Housing Authority, and helped coordinate a bike giveaway event with Bike Works where 23 youth living in low-income housing received a free bicycle and helmet. One of the youths is a graduate of the Bike Works Earn-A-Bike program, and now uses her new bike to commute to her part-time job. Ella and her daughter Japhia are both recipients of the Bikes-for-All! program. They ride together for exercise, fresh air, and even to run errands. "This bike means freedom to Japhia," says Ella. "She hasn't been able to get out much since we've been in quarantine, and even before that, she felt isolation as an only child who hasn't fully acclimated to life in the US. This bike gives her something to be proud of and a new way to engage with people." To qualify for Bikes-for-All!, folks must not already own a bike, and live within our strategic planning target area of southeast Seattle. APPLY FOR A FREE BIKE THROUGH BIKES-FOR-ALL! BIKEWORKS.ORG/BIKES-FOR-ALL INCREASING ACCESS Our mobile bike shop, the BikeMobile, offers free bike repair around the city. Sarah and her family received services from the BikeMobile in the summer of 2020. “ALL families deserve access to the health, well-being, and environmental benefits of biking! The various barriers that our family faced (in finding affordable bikes), despite the resources we do have, highlight the current inequities in access to biking.” The BikeMobile is designed to increase access to bike repair to youth, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, and other members of marginalized communities by visiting ‘bike deserts’ in SE Seattle where bike shops are few and far between. BUILDING COMMUNITY FROM A SAFE DISTANCE In 2020, we launched an online event series, “Bicycle Stories,” featuring inspiring speakers about how the bicycle has been a vehicle for change in their lives. Karen attended an event featuring local activist Phyllis Porter. "Bike Works has been a great resource for me as a Black woman that recently took up biking. From my first encounter with the Bike Works crew a couple of years ago at the Refuge Outdoor Festival where I learned about bike camping and how to fix a flat, to Phyllis Porter's recent online presentation about Safe Streets Activism and the Seattle chapter of Black Girls Do Bike, Bike Works has become my trusted go-to source for learning about biking and connecting with other BIPOC folks in the Seattle biking community." – Karen Keep up with our web calendar for upcoming events! bikeworks.org/calendar ONLINE RESOURCES Our mission is not just to build bikes, but to build sustainable communities by increasing access to cycling knowledge and skills.
