December 2019 RED HAWK REVIEW A Publication of the Cedar Springs Public School District A Message from our Superintendent Happy Holidays Families and Communiy of Cedar Springs Public Schools. Cedar Springs Public Schools has much to be thankful for during the holiday season. It is exciting to report that our students grew throughout the first four months of the school year in their academic and extracurricular endeavors. They have given the community of Cedar Springs countless reasons to stand up and cheer in the first part of the 2019/20 school year. From what I know of our talented students, there is more to come. December’s event schedule was filled with opportunities to celebrate the talents and dedicated efforts of our students and staff at all levels. One of the more memorable moments of the concert season came out of the Sixth Grade Band Concert when our students became the teachers, and their special guest became the performers. With over 300 people assembled on the stage in the auditorium, the Special Guest Band gave it their all as they played Hot Cross Buns to the delight of the audience. The upcoming winter season promises to be brighter than ever for Cedar Springs students, families, and staff. The investments people are making in our schools and community are paying incredible dividends. We encourage you to pause and give thanks during this season of reflection for the impact those investments are making on the lives of our students, families, and staff who call Cedar Springs home. We also ask that you join us at a student event in 2020 whenever possible. Our students will assuredly give you many reasons to stand as a community and applaud their efforts. With respect and appreciation, Scott B. Smith, Superintendent 204 E. Muskegon Street, Cedar Springs, MI 49319 616.696.1204 www.csredhawks.org

Mental Health Matters Why Relationships Matter Christine Anderson, MA, LLPC, SCL Cedar Trails Elementary Counselor Often times we find ourselves faced with difficult situations in life. It may be a financial hardship, a complicated relationship, a stressful job environment or simply keeping up with the demands of everyday life. When we look back at these trying times in our life, it may be helpful to ask ourselves: “how did I get through?” Many times, it’s because of the relationships we have with those around us. Put simply, social connection is the feeling of being close with or connected with others. It is a sense of belonging in a world that moves fast. When we don’t take the time to make these social connections we may find ourselves feeling lonely, isolated, depressed and even hostile. These effects can be detrimental to our well-being. The holidays can be an incredibly demanding time of year. If you find yourself struggling to cope, start by reaching out to someone you trust. It may be a colleague, family member or an old friend. Make plans to meet for coffee, talk on the phone or send a quick text once a day. If you don’t feel that you have a current social connection to turn to, consider seeking out a mental health professional. Turing to a counselor in a time of need may seem like a daunting task, but rest assured that their primary goal is to provide a trusting and healthy human connection. We live in a time where making connections with others is easy. However, quantity of connections is not always equal to the quality of those relationships. I would encourage you to invest your time in relationships that give you a sense of belonging. Those are the relationships that will get you through the tough times. Those are the relationships that matter. Source: Connectedness & Health: The Science of Social Connection written by Dr. Emma Seppala Cedar Springs Public Schools Page 5
