Page 5 Between the Pages March 2019 How the Otoe Indians got the Horse Harlan Seyfer, Historian Plattsmouth Main Street Association The queson everyone asks (if I am included in everyone) is “When and how did the Otoe Indians at the mouth of the Pla5e get their horses?” When the white man arrived in the New World, there were no horses here. Some two million years ago, the horse evolved in North America from a one-foot tall, three-toed creature to the modern version we now know. The land-bridge across the Bering Strait upon which humans migrated from Asia also served the same purpose for the horse, but in the opposite direcon. Once on the open Steppes, the horse thrived. That said, it took thousands of years aAer Eurasian people first confronted the beast before they even thought of riding it. The horse was such an unpredictable beast that few could stay aboard. The horse is perfectly designed for flight, not fight. The horse will go all but berserk when anything lands on its back simply because it has learned through the millennia that anything is likely to be a predator. Thus, as wildlife ecologist Craig Downer noted, if man had dreamed of riding the horse he could hardly have expected a hospitable recepon from the animal. No surprise then, a major obstacle to the spread of horses was the Nave American lack of knowledge of the care and use of the strange animal. Indians living at Spanish missions and on rancheros, where they were oAen forced to care for livestock, quickly picked up the skills. “What would be more natural than for a herds- man to make his escape with some of the horses entrusted to his care?” asked Historian Francis Haines. To control the situaon, Spanish New Mexican authories instuted a law against Indians owning horses and guns. Furthermore, in 1675 the authories unwisely chose to crack down on the Pueblo Indian religion by arresng 47 religious leaders on charges of sorcery. Most were publicly whipped, but four were executed. In response, the Pueblo Indians rebelled, a5acking the Spanish New Mexico se5lements in 1680. The well- coordinated revolt was successful, Spanish survivors fled New Mexico, not to return for 13 years. They leA behind their horses and the naves trained in their care and use. The spread of horses northward accelerat- ed. Connued on page 6..
Page 6 Between the Pages March 2019 Connued from page 5. The impact was enormous. Before the horse, Nave Americans were dependent for movement upon dogs and women, while the men scouted for game and enemies. A camp could move only about six miles a day. While a horse-borne camp could move 30 or more miles a day with heavier loads. The pi grew in size and wealth was accumulated. The old and sick could be brought along on hunts. Hunng buffalo from horseback was much more efficient that previous methods on foot allowing for a sur- plus of food (e.g., dried meat). Less me hunng freed up young men for warfare and – ironically – raiding other tribes for horses. The la5er provided another means of acquiring wealth, leveling the social status playing field. On the other hand, as historian Pekka Hämälänen points out, “it is possible that horses triggered a decline in women’s status because the bison hunt became more the domain of the mounted male hunter rather than of the society at large.” The map shows the spread of horses from Nueva España (Mexico) north to Nuevo México (everything north of the Rio Grande) by 1600 and 1659. According to the map, horses reached Kansas in approximately 1724 and spread to eastern Iowa in about 1770. But we know that the Otoe and Pawnee Indians had horses before 1714. How? In 1714, the Frenchman Bourgmont reached the Pla5e-Missouri River Confluence. He wrote aAerwards in one of his official reports that the Kansas Indians “have very fine horses and are very good horsemen.” The Kansas were neighbors of the Otoe with villages downstream on the Missouri near the current Nebraska-Kansas line. Bourgmont went on to state that the Pawnee, who lived on the Pla5e River, were “numerous, alert, and good horsemen.” In the early 1700s, the Otoe were on very good terms with both tribes, trading on a regular basis. And that is the answer to everyone’s queson.
