Meet Your Management Team Secretary – Karen Plappert Sports have always been a major part of my life. Although girl’s sports were very limited when I was growing up – I did play basketball in high school and college. I also learned the game of golf at an early age. After graduation I began my Health and Physical Education career with the West Shore School District. I began teaching at Red Land and Cedar Cliff and coached girls basketball, field hockey and tennis. In 1982 our lives forever changed for the better and that was because of the birth of our son, Michael. I switched from teaching at the high school level to elementary and stopped coaching on a high school level. I remained teaching in elementary until my retirement. In 1986 we were introduced to York County Special Olympics by Bob O’Brian. I started a gross motor program for the younger athletes. Most of those athletes are still with our program today. When Michael turned 8 – we started our first training session with bowling. In 1992 we were asked to become certified in soccer and so our coaching began. For a while Bill and I coached basketball and were assistants in bowling, soccer, and aquatics. Today both Bill and I are still assistant coaches in 3 sports, are Unified Partners in golf and we also travel to Fall Festival and Summer Games. Our biggest coaching highlight is being able to attend USA Games as assistant soccer coaches. I have been retired for 10 years and now both Bill and I enjoy taking care of our 2 grandchildren during the school year, being part of Michael’s participation in 11 sports and I am also pursuing genealogy information of my parent’s families. We have been blessed to be a part of York County Special Olympics program and it has been and continues to be a privilege to work with such talented athletes. Pictured with our secretary is husband Bill our Olympian Michael, and Grandchildren Will and Cami.
Getting a medal and standing on the podium feels like being a winner. That is what it is like to participate in the Athletic Spring Games. The games start with the opening ceremony where the athlete’s parade and the torch is carried to the place where the Olympic torch is lit. There are events like the shot put, softball throw, relays, turbo javelin, running long jump, standing long jump, meter races, and wheelchair and walking events too. The shot put, softball throw, and turbo javelin are throwing events. You throw these as far as you can. The running long jump and the standing long jump are jumping as far as you can events. There are several distance races from 100 to 800 meters. Each athlete competes in three events, and everyone runs the relay. After each event the bronze, silver, and gold medal are given to the competitors. Just like the Olympics on TV, the athletes stand on the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place podium to receive their awards. This is an awesome feeling. It is great to be a winner. Athletic practice takes place at York Vo Tech., February, March, and April, and the spring games are held at York College in May. The spring games are a great way to meet people and have fun. The athletes could use your help. We need people to volunteer to be buddies to help athletes the day of the games. If you would like to volunteer, you may email your name and phone number to the athlete representative Kasey Stonefield at udstonefield@aol.com. Hope to see everyone there next year! Kasey Stonefield is a York County Special Olympics Athlete and the athlete representative to the management team. Thank you Kasey for your in-depth reporting and your article in the newsletter.
York County Special Olympics Equestrian Hello, my name is Kati McFadden and I am the Equestrian Representative for the York County Special Olympics Horseback Riders. If any horseback riding athletes have any questions, comments, or concerns please feel free to contact me at my email address at kmcfadden2@ comcast.net and I will try to answer any emails to my best ability. Part two of this article will be in the next newsletter. Part One… Ever since late October up till now horseback riders have been coming to Leg Up Farms every Saturday from ten o’clock to twelve o’clock. Unlike any other Special Olympics sport, the horseback riding program is an all year around sport because of the indoor and outdoor arenas. Also some of the Leg Up Farm horseback riders compete in a lot of horse shows. So far the horseback riding team has learned so much about horses and how they can bring out the best in them. The first thing that the athletes learn is to brush their horse with a curry comb. The curry comb helps get the horse’s blood moving through their veins and it also helps remove dirt from their fur coats. Then the next thing comes the hard brush. The hard brush is used for brushing the loose hair off of the horse’s body. The last thing the riders are taught to use is the hoof pick. The hoof pick is used to clean out the inside of the horse's hooves where mud, small rocks, and ice can get into their feet and can cause a lot of problems for the horse and their feet. Once the horses are cleaned the athletes are ready to tack up their horses. This means putting on the saddle blanket on the horse's back and then the saddle pad. The saddle pad is used to help keep the pressure off the horse's back while they are moving. Then the athletes are ready to put on their saddles. The saddles that they will be using are the Western and the English saddles. The Western saddle has a horn on the top of the mental so the riders have something to hold on to. As for the English saddle there is no horn and is more common. The English saddle has a grab strap to help the rider to stay on the horse's back. Finally the last thing the athletes do is to put on the rope halter which will be used for the lead rope. After the rope halter is on the reins go on next and rest on the horse's back. With some help from the coaches or the volunteers the bridle will be settled on the rope halter and then the lead rope will be clipped on to the rope halter. Then with the lead rope in their hands the athletes and their assigned volunteers by their side the riders will lead their horses into the arena. When they all get into the arena the first thing the athletes will do is walk their horse or pony around until everyone is ready to ride. Stayed tuned to the next newsletter for Part Two.
