SHAUNHALE Shaun share his thoughts ahead of today’s league fixture versus Romsey Town. Good afternoon, .I’d like to welcome the Staff, players and supporters from Romsey fc here to Moon Park for today’s rescheduled fixture for what should be a great game of football. We hope your brief stay with us will be a pleasant one. Last Saturday was a busy day, the boys were in early to have their photo taken in our new strip, then we went about our business and started our league campaign with a pleasing win against Wessex league newbies Ash united. There was a league debut for Harry Beckley and he showed glimpses of what a good footballer he is It was great to get off to a winning start and I’m hoping that the win will give us confidence going into today’s game. We didn’t quite hit top gear in the game but there were periods of play that were very pleasing and we did create lots of chances. Goals came from Justin Bennett and Ronan Clancy. We are expecting a really tough test today against Romsey and hopefully the boys can perform well. I’d like to thank everyone for their support today and hope its an entertaining game. Shaun Manager

The Rayman is an excellent defender who can also get forward and deliver crosses of good quality. Another 20 year old who has a huge future in front of him. Sam O’Hagan (Defender) - Sam is a loyal club man and whilst he is still a relatively young man, he is already classed as a club stalwart. Sam is a wholehearted defender who has never let his club down, whilst also representing every ages group within the senior section. Steve Walker (Defender) – Big Steve Walker comes from a family of very successful footballs in the local area. A huge centre half that wears his heart on his sleeve. Steve is a big character both on and off of the pitch and we are delighted to welcome him to Moon Park.
PENPICS Jack Roberts (Defender) - Jack has had a short sabbatical away from football as he has been busy in his work life. Jack is a steady defender with two good feet. He has a great attitude and has fitted into his new surrounding effortlessly. George Bennett (Defender/Midfielder) – George is a very elegant and comfortable footballer, who can play in a number of positions. Tenacious in the tackle but has an eye for a pass, George was an excellent acquisition in 2019. Burds is a combative and energetic midfield player who can also play at centre half. At 20 years old Burds has a long and exciting future ahead of him. Kane O’Keefe (Defender/Midfielder) – Kane has already had a great non-league career, playing for a couple of local teams. Prior to that Kane has made almost 300 appearances for the Harlequins scoring over a hundred goals. Eddie Perrett (Defender/Midfielder) - Eddie has had an excellent non league career with good spells at Salisbury FC and AFC Totton in particular. RESERVETEAM The reserves are looking strong again this season, retaining the majority of the squad from last season, whilst helping the club to secure the signings of Jake Burgess and Andy Williams to name a couple. After an unusual pre season being a little bit up and down, but still winning 2 out of the 3 friendlies and scoring 11 goals in the process, has confirmed the thoughts of manager Jay Madden and his management team, that we are in for an exciting season with an exciting squad of players to pick from (I’m sure having some headache in the process) whilst also still having the view of progressing players into the first team squad, and also giving the pathway to our talented under 23s and 18s. Things are looking bright at the club and we look forward to what should be a competitive season for all Jay UNDER23S Pre-season: The squad began pre-season with training amongst all the senior teams. UNDER18S The u18’s are looking to continue the player development that has seen 7 players make debuts with the u23’s and Reserve squads. We are looking forward to another season opener with the HCDL which will be put back a week as we start our new campaign with a home tie in the FA youth cup against Poole Town. As the only Salisbury area team representing in this prestigious tournament we hope to better the last year FA youth cup by getting into the second round qualifying after stunning Hamble in the preliminary round last year. The preseason has been affected by covid so far but we hope to gain the necessary momentum over the next weeks as we get ready for September. We have friendlies planned against local rivals-Laverstock & Ford, Alderbury FC, & Amesbury FC to fine tune heading into this new season. We are still recruiting new players throughout the year as a good number of our lads will feature in the U23 & Reserve squads this season as we share this “Genuine” pathway to men’s football here at Harlequins….. This team has been continually playing as a Youth team since u8’s with 2 players hitting 10 seasons,2 on 9 & 7 seasons respectively, we are Proud to see local lads now beginning to represent this club at the Senior level and 2021/2022 could see the first u18 to make a first team debut. Scott YOUTHTEAMS The As our Youth teams commence their pre-season training schedules for the upcoming season, we are delighted to announce the number of teams available from 6 last season to 14 ahead of season 2021/2022. MATCHREPORT BHH 2-1 ASH UNITED Home win to start the new season It was not the prettiest of games to watch, but the main thing from an Harlequin perspective was to get off to a winning start. The visitors are new to the Wessex League and as their home base is near Guildford, they quite rightly arrived very early. Both teams could have kicked off at 2pm to be honest but the tradition 3pm start was adhered to. The match kicked off at a frenetic pace with both teams trying to impose themselves on each other. The Harlequins were just edging the chances created column although Ash continually kept the men in black & white honest at the back. Both goal keepers had made routine saves in the opening 30 mins, before the young referee took centre stage when she had to take a knee to recover her breath. Thankfully she recovered in good order, enough to continue for the rest of the match & we hope she is in good health today. Justin Bennett then did what JB has done for many years and he opened the scoring, with a far post header from a pin point Danny Young cross. The chances were mainly falling to Bemmy players in this period and only a great save from the visiting GK stopped Harry Beckley from finding the net. The last word of the first half nearly went to Ash as an under hit back pass from an Harlequin player was pounced upon by the opposition forward who in turn tried an audacious finish which luckily (from a home point of view) struck the post. The second half was a far more attritional affair with both sides guilty of some average play, whilst also both showing glimpses of some good stuff, a typical opening day affair IMO. The visitors drew level just after the hour mark when a good through ball was chased down and finished well past the hapless Paddy Creese in the home goal. Again the game seemed to be heading for a stalemate, but some good substitutions gave the Harlequins the added bit of energy they were looking for. Indeed one of the new arrivals scored the Harlies second goal (and eventual winner) when an excellent cross was 'nicked' home at the front post by Ronan Clancy. Both teams had half chance to add to the scoreboard in the final few moments of the game, but with a huge sigh of relief the referee blew her whistle for a well earned 3 points for the Bemmy boys.
The club was formed in 1886 and played in local league football with successful spells before joining the Southampton League as founder members in 1908. The 1920s was a good decade for Romsey Town and after winning the Hampshire Intermediate Cup and Southampton Senior League, the club joined the Hampshire League. In 1930 Romsey moved to its second ground at Priestlands, before moving again to its current home, The By-Pass Ground, in 1956. In 1964 it was relegated from the league and dropped down to Junior Division 1 of the Southampton League only returning to its senior section in 1968. In the 1970s success returned and after three successive promotions and a Southampton Senior Cup triumph in 1974, the club regained its Hampshire League status in 1975 and a year later won the Hampshire Senior Cup unexpectedly defeating Farnborough Town 1-0 in a final played at The Dell, then home of Southampton FC. In 1986 Romsey became a founder member of the Wessex League, clinching the title and reaching the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in 1990. Another reversal in fortune saw the club relegated to the Hampshire League in 1998 and hit an all time low in 2003 when finishing bottom of the league’s third division and had to seek re-election. When the Wessex League absorbed the original Hampshire League in 2004, Romsey Town were placed in Division 1 and won promotion back to the top flight in 2007. The Town enjoyed one of their most successful seasons in 2011/12 finishing eighth but this signalled a further period of turmoil and relegated again 2014 to their status in Wessex League Division 1. The club then appointed Andy Samuels as Manager and whilst they finished second bottom in 2014/15, there has been steady improvement, with mid table finishes in 2015/16 and 2016/17, leading to a promotion challenges in 2017/18 and 2018/ 19 which resulted in a sixth and fourth place finishes. During the summer Andy Samuels stepped down and has been replaced by Chris McGinn, a former professional footballer and international coach. However, Chris decided to step down in March 2020 to focus on his work with Chelsea FC and was replaced by Adam Pullinger formerly of Colden Common and AFC Stoneham. For the 2020/21 season, Adam has retained the core of the Town squad and made a number of signings to give us strength in depth and enable the club to field teams in both the Premier Division and U23 Division West of the Hampshire Combination & Development Football League.
