It’s been a pleasure and honor to help provide this vital resource to South students, parents, staff, and the community at large. Expect the next issue of eNews sometime in late August. Below you will find a request for volunteers for South’s Summer Bridge Program; a listing of summer classes and camps; details on Food For Lane County’s free summer lunch program; a listing of student volunteering opportunities; and the Career Center Check-In. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM We have a "Save The Date" event in August that needs parent volunteers' help. Please check your August calendars and if you can help, it would be greatly appreciated! The Summer Bridge Program at South is looking for parent volunteers to accompany students on field trips on August 13th and 15th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. If you are available to help, please contact Jessica Thomas at thomas_je@4j.lane.edu. This program helps incoming 9th graders get oriented to South through a variety of activities led by Staff and other adult mentors. Many thanks to the hundreds of volunteers who have made this year an outstanding one for our Staff and students! The energy and time invested in our school is one of the reasons South can offer all it does to our student body. Have a wonderful summer, but don't forget to come and see us again in the fall! for our week long Outdoor Theatre Camps throughout the summer for ages 5-8 or 9-13 with fun themes such as Elephant and Piggie, Where the Wild Things Are, Robin Hood and more. If you're looking for musical theatre fun come be a part of one of our Summer Stock Productions—join us for High School Musical 2 Jr. (Ages 12-18) July 15-26th and Music Man KIDS (Ages 8-12) August 12th- 23rd. Whether your child is an experienced thespian, or looking to try out the stage for the first time, Upstart Crow Children's Theatre provides an inclusive environment for a diverse community of students. Is your teen interested in acting, singing, and dancing? Whether returning to the stage or looking for an introduction to the world of theatre, RCT welcomes all actors. With camps aimed at developing a variety of skills in middle and high school thespians, you are sure to find a good fit! FREE SUMMER LUNCHES Food For Lane County invites all children and youth age 18 and younger to eat lunch for free during the summer months. Staff and volunteers serve meals at schools, parks and community centers located throughout Lane County. Each summer, FFLC serves thousands of lunches and breakfasts to children through the Summer Food Program. En español. Free lunches all summer for Lane County youth ages 2 to 18: 6/24- 8/16/19 at various sites and times (see www.foodforlanecounty.org for specifics. STUDENT VOLUNTEERING • 6/10/19-8/27/19: Eugene Public Library seeking one or two student volunteers, age 16+, to help children ages 6 – 12 in a group Minecraft challenge at the downtown Eugene Public Library. Program takes place Mondays and Tuesdays from 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. all summer, and volunteers would be expected to participate weekly on their chosen day(s) until 8/27. Tasks include turning on computers, putting out signs, welcoming children and giving them name tags, helping explain the weekly build challenge, and helping them maneuver
throughout the hour-long program. Some familiarity with Minecraft is helpful. Comfort with computers is important. To apply, send your volunteer application to ahartsfield@eugene.or.gov. • 6/19/19: CIT training day from 10 am-2 pm for students ages 14-17 interested in the Eugene Family YMCA Counselor-In-Training (CIT) program. This program is an opportunity for youth to gain hands-on experience while working with campers and being guided by camp leaders. Applications must be filled out before the training and turned in to the Youth Development Office at the main YMCA location on Patterson or emailed back to Maritza Ruiz, Multi-Site Coordinator, Eugene Family YMCA (541-686-9622, maritza@eugeneymca.org). All CITs are expected to attend a training. Come to the training prepared for a regular camp day: shoes with back straps, water bottle and clothes to be active in. • 6/19/19-6/20/19: The Refugee Resettlement Coalition of Lane County will hold its third annual World Refugee Day 2019 on Thursday, June 20.The goal of the event is to raise awareness of the plight of people throughout the world who are forced to flee their homeland. This free event attracts approximately 300 visitors each year and will be held at First United Methodist Church in Eugene starting at 5 pm. The committee invites SEHS students to help set up (6/19 and 6/20), clean up, greet and distribute handouts for World Refugee Day 2019. Interested students can email Gloria Duber (EugeneRetiree@gmail.com) for specific dates, times and details about volunteering activities. • 6/26/19: Volunteer fair from 3-6 pm@Eugene Public Library, Bascom-Tykeson Room. • Summer 2019: Food for Lane County volunteer site supervisor positions open. Minimum two-week commitment working two hours a day, Monday-Friday. Must find own transportation, be able to lift 40 pounds, and have a food handler’s card. Training included. Sign up in the Main Office. • Summer Volunteering with Willamalane Park and Recreation District in Springfield • Parenting Now is looking for students who like to work with young children to work in their Children's Program that goes alongside their parenting groups. See specifics of this job here. Volunteers will start the first week of October and will work for 3 hours/week for 10-12 weeks. You may apply to volunteer immediately. Questions? Questbridge National College Match for Seniors is a college and scholarship application process that helps outstanding low-income high-school seniors gain admission and full four-year scholarships to the nation's most selective colleges. It covers tuition to top- tier universities, room and board, is loan-free and requires no parental contribution. For families earning less than $65,000/year for a family of four. Materials for 2019 will be released over the summer. To get started now, join the QuestBridge email list and look over the 2018 materials. Applications due 9/30. o Please give at least two weeks' notice (preferably four weeks!) for requesting any letters of recommendation, and if you specifically want a counselor recommendation, submit the yellow Scholarship Recommendation Request form, available in the counseling center and in the career center. • 6/24/19-7/17/19: LCC-bound South graduates/GED earners! Do you need help avoiding the summer melt? Then take the free LCC course, RTEC101 Gateway to College and Careers. In it, you'll learn to navigate Lane's systems including advising and financial aid. You'l also develop time-management and other college coping skills. To register, you need a completed Lane application. (Brenda Williams, RTEC faculty member and advisor, will need to change your fall 2019 application to a summer 2019 one. Contact her at 541-463-3443 or .) • 6/25/19: Due date to RSVP for the 10th Annual Generations Luncheon hosted by the UO Women of Graduate Sciences. This free luncheon is for female or female-identifying students who have just completed the 9th- through 12th- grades and who are interested in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields. It will take place July 2nd, 2019 in the Ford Alumni Center at the
University of Oregon. Participants will meet female UO professors, post doctorates, and graduate students in many fields of science. The keynote speaker this year is Barbara McManus, Director of Research and Development for HP, Inc. (Not every student who RSVPs is guaranteed a spot, so please do so early to increase your chances.) • 7/1/19: Applications due for Young Women's Fire Camp. Free fire camp for young women ages 15-18. Camp goals include building leadership and team skills, instilling confidence in campers, and providing an opportunity to try firefighting. This day camp runs from 7/22-27, 8 am-5 pm (except for the shorter last day) at the Emergency Services Training Center at 1705 W. 2nd Ave in Eugene (2nd & Chambers). Opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the world of business and earn 1 elective college credit. $50 program fee. (If fee is a a deterrent to participation, email psusbi@pdx.edu. Applications processed on first-come, first- served basis, so apply ASAP. • 8/16/19: Due date for the Space Art Challenge. Please look at them with family members, keep them somewhere you'll remember them, and come to the career center in the fall with any questions you have about the material. • Is the stress of planning for life after high school making your student anxious? Here's a lovely podcast episode, How Do You Want to be When You Grow Up, featuring author, Abraham Verghese, that you and they might find refreshing. • LCC-bound South graduates--Notice from LCC's Financial Aid Office: "[Financial aid] awards will begin to be available on June 17th. Please note, that
not all students will be awarded June 17th. Instead, we will prioritize those students who are enrolled for summer term and award fall starts throughout June and July or when [applicants'] files are completed. We will post these soft deadlines in the Titan Times [student email newsletter] and outside our service windows in Building One." • The LCC Foundation Scholarship awards for 2019-20 have been posted on LCC's website. This represents the bulk of their scholarship awards. (There are a few other scholarships that have an alternate application process and which are awarded during the summer or fall.) Check them out at: https://www.lanecc.edu/foundation/scholarships-awarded. • Message from OSAC: "...Students and parents may have a hard time finding OSAC emails related to various applications: OSAC Scholarships, Oregon Opportunity Grant, Oregon Promise, ORSAA (Oregon Student Aid Application), and more." See entire letter for info re: accessing messages from OSAC. • More than 400 colleges and universities still have openings, financial aid, and housing available to qualified freshman and/or transfer students for the fall 2019 semester. Check out NACAC's 32nd Annual College Openings Update, released on 5/3 and available until 7/1. Both public and private colleges are included. and the list is continually updated. • Summer Academy to Inspire Learning (SAIL) Program at the U of O is now accepting applications. SAIL offers FREE week-long day and residential academic summer programs on the campus. Learn about various topics through fun, social, and interactive activities from distinguished University of Oregon faculty members. They offer sessions on the college admissions process, scholarships, and how to navigate financial aid, as well. Applicants must be current 9th through 11th graders, and preference is given to those who come from low-income families, will be first-generation college students, come from underrepresented minority backgrounds, are "unaccompanied youth," are returning SAIL students, or are siblings of returning students. There is no better time or opportunity for students to explore Oregon's private colleges while earning application fee waivers. This year, OPC Week will take place from 7/29-8/2. • Rites of Passage Summer Youth Academies@ LCC. These programs are designed to inform and inspire high-school and middle-school students of color in Lane County. African-American, Asian and Pacific-Islander American, Native American, and Latinx students are immersed in their own respective summer programs focusing on cultural history, literature, folklore, and traditions. These programs are based in an academic framework that promotes positive self-image and self-esteem.
• Backpacking Rite of Passage Trip for Girls or Boys: Cascadia Quest's Young Women's Rite of Passage and Young Men’s Initiation are contemporary wilderness rites of passage based on the old ways of adulthood initiation. They are 9-day programs, including 2 days and nights of solo time, facilitated by skilled guides and assisted by a circle of initiated adults and elders. The experience is meant to sufficiently challenge the initiate to leave behind their life and psychology as a child and return with the courage, vision, knowledge and support to take up their life as an adult.
