Introduction Welcome to the Arkansas Adult Education & Literacy Professional Development Catalog. The catalog is a listing of the professional development events that will take place in 2017-18 fiscal year. We hope this booklet will help adult education/literacy practitioners plan their professional development for this year. The catalog can also be found on the AALRC web site at http://aalrc.org. Your opinions are very important to us. We request that you send us your comments. This web page offers a convenient way for you to E-mail us your comments.

Registration Information Registration • We use an online registration system escWorks®. The Shoebox service allows participants to maintain a history of the courses they have taken. There is a personal transcript feature that allows the user to track credits earned from other organizations. The Website: • https://www.escweb.net/ar_esc/ Confirmation • As soon at you register online, you will receive a confirmation of registration. Cancellation • Cancellations must be made online through escweb if participants cannot attend a workshop. • If an event is canceled by the AALRC, participants will be notified by phone, fax, or e-mail. Waiting Lists • Escweb will create a waiting list for the AALRC of full workshops. Materials • Materials needed for professional development activities will be provided unless otherwise stated. Special Needs • Please contact the AALRC with any special needs you may have. This includes any dietary needs! Cost • Events in this catalog are open to adult education /literacy staff paid with state adult education funds with no registration fee, unless otherwise stated. • Literacy Councils that do NOT receive adult education funding through the Department of Career Education, Adult Education Division, will NOT be reimbursed for their travel expenses, but may attend workshops at no cost.
Professional Development Operational Guidelines Attendees: • Anyone working in an adult education or literacy council in Arkansas is eligible for participation in professional development activities sponsored by the AALRC. Messages & • Participants will be interrupted during training for emergencies only. Telephones • Please turn off (or put in vibrate mode) cell phone while meetings are in session. Travel • Travel reimbursement will be paid according to state adult education travel guidelines. • Literacy Councils that receive adult education funds and do not have staff paid with those funds will be eligible for one staff person to be reimbursed travel. • Literacy Councils that do NOT receive adult education funding through the Department of Career Education, Adult Education Division, will NOT be reimbursed for their travel expenses. • AmeriCorps are NOT eligible for reimbursement through the AALRC. Meals • Participants will be reimbursed according to state adult education travel guidelines. • Please contact the AALRC staff to let them know if you have special dietary needs for meals.
Year at a Glance 2018 AUGUST August 8 & 10 TABE CLAS-E The Training will prepare attendees to administer and score the TABE CLAS-E to English Language Learners. Attendees will learn about the development of the assessment, the proper procedures to administer the assessment, and scoring the assessment with rubrics. Example materials and practice using the test booklets and rubrics is also incorporated in the training. Directions on entering the assessment in LACES will also be provided. August 8th: Ft. Smith Adult Education Center, 501 S. 20th Street Session ID: 359369 August 10th: AALRC Session ID: 359371 Registration has begun. August 14 Confidentiality Compliance This session covers confidentiality requirements under FERPA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. The online Canvas course will also cover appropriate confidentiality practices in a variety of settings. A certificate of completion will be provided upon course completion which will be verified by individual log-in information. Session ID: 359452 - Registration has begun. August 16 LACES 101 The LACES 101 training is designed as an introduction to reporting and the data management system for Arkansas Adult Education. The training will review the data entry process and procedures; data that is collected from students; data entry for LACES- entering students, adding assessments, adding attendance, creating a class, enrolling student in a class, keywords, and designations; and, basic searches and running reports. LACES 101 is for all staff (including instructors) and Directors who need to be familiar with LACES and data entry. Session ID: 359569 - Registration has begun. August 17 LACES 201 The LACES 201 is designed as a more in-depth training that examines the data flow process; federal, state, and custom reports; performing general and specific searches; data use in program planning; and, a deeper dive into data analysis on a program level. LACES 201 is for all staff (including instructors) and Directors who need to be familiar with utilizing LACES data, including reports, searches, and analysis. August 21 TABE 11 & 12 This workshop will provide detailed instruction on how to use TABE Online, and to answer questions. It will also have an initial discussion about the new TABE forms, and how they differ from forms 9&10. The training will provide resources that will be available to assist participants with getting started with testing- include training links, and free technical support at any time. This workshop will include how to schedule test sessions, add students, monitor students while they are testing, and finally pulling the reports. August 22 Integrated Education & Training This workshop will focus on comprehensive development and implementation of IET programs in adult education. The session will cover: 1. August 23 Distance Learning (DL)100 This course will focus on the new module for the Arkansas Distance Learning Program. Policy and "Best Practices" for teaching online will be the foundation of this training. Teachers will concentrate on developing and maintaining an active online learning environment. Topics will includes teach and student characteristics of learning online, curriculum resource alignment, online expectations, class norms, and DL platforms. August 28 College & Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) – English Language Arts This is a two-day course which will focus on the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) that reflect the content most relevant to preparing adult students for success in colleges, technical training programs, work, and citizenship—in the areas of English language arts/literacy and mathematics. Teachers will be trained on understanding and integrating the CCR standards into the adult education curriculum. The first day will focus on English Language Arts standards, employability standards and lesson planning. Session ID: 360943 - Registration has begun. August 29 College & Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) - Math The second day will focus on Math standards and lesson planning. Participants do NOT have to attend both days. SEPTEMBER Literacy Task Analysis (LTA) Blended Workshop September 5 This is a blended workshop that includes an initial online portion of the basic knowledge regarding Literacy Task Analysis/Functional Hooks. The online portion will begin on September 5th. Participants will then be partnered with a mentor to go to a business/industry to perform an LTA. They will learn the skills needed to relate workplace education program goals to company demands for high performance work and product quality. September 7 Classroom Targets for High School Equivalency This regional workshop for adult education teachers explores the general framework of the four content areas of high school equivalency. It will target the course topics in the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) Level E of all four areas. Session ID: 361228 - Registration has begun. September 11 Facilitating Career Development This session will provide information regarding the 20-week hybrid Career Development Facilitator Course offered primarily online with the exception of 3 days face-to-face. There will be information about what is a Career Development Facilitator and the role of a CDF in the Arkansas Adult Education Programs and Literacy Council. Student expectations and information about what you will learn in the course will be provided. In addition, helpful information, suggestions, tips, and guidance will be provided to know how to be successful in the course. There will be information about future assignments, Career Interest Assessments, career development resources, and more. Student presentations will be given. Session ID: To be sent to participants September 12 Adult Education SNAP Employment and Training (E & T) Administrators This workshop will focus on assisting SNAP E & T administrators to follow best practices in order to grow and develop programs. Topics will include provider requirements, including monthly reports and the site visit checklist, resource providers, such as DWS and Career Pathways Initiative and additional resources. This workshop by invitation only. September 13-14 Fall Administrators’ Meeting This is a mandatory two-day meeting designed for administrators of adult education programs and literacy councils funded with adult education grants.
This training will help attendees discover the critical issues and factors that ensure success for administrators of adult education. Topics will include federal and state guidelines, program accountability, examining current documentation processes, strategies for overall program improvement, and opportunities to network and exchange ideas with other administrators. Session ID: 361007 – Registration has begun. September 18 Online Software Programs Overview of the online learning programs that are offered through the AALRC. Those include AZTEC (all parts), Teknimedia, Telephone Doctor (Service Skills) and Rosetta Stone. Each participant will have the opportunity to setup accounts and make sure he/she is ready to use these great online resources. Session ID: 361090 – Registration has begun September 19 Beginning Excel The workshop will cover the basics to learn Excel. It will be hands-on to help participants learn the basics of Excel to edit worksheets more productively. This is a great opportunity for support staff to receive professional development. Session ID: 361092 – Registration has begun September 21 Canvas Instructors will learn the basics of Canvas such as, navigational tools, setting up course pages, lessons, discussions, quizzes, emails conferences and eternal links. Instructors will build a simple course and maintain this learning environment course using these tools. Session ID: 361008 – Registration begins 8/20. September 25-26 WIOA Partners’ Meeting This is a two-day meeting with the state WIOA partners. DWS plans the program with all partners participating in the workshop. The objective is to help all partners to better plan and participate fully in the implementation of the WIOA law. This meeting will take place at Embassy Suites in Hot Springs. Registration is through DWS. September 27 Equipping Students for the 21st Century Workforce This two-part training will provide helpful information on interviewing skills and job search skills to assist students with preparing for the 21st Century Workforce. Helpful strategies and tips will be provided during mock interviews, videos, and group activities. The participants will learn how to help assist their students by informing them about how to ace an interview. Part Two: This session will provide helpful tools and resources that can be used to assist students with preparing for the workforce as well as learn how to keep a job. Information will be provided on interests and skills, communication skills, networking, elevator pitch, identifying employers, the hidden job market, and more. September 28 Classroom Targets for High School Equivalency NE Regional Location – TBD Session ID: 361229 - Registration will begin 8/27. OCTOBER October 1 Learning Disabilities (LD) Foundations This course will be online through LINCS. Participants will be required to complete modules online within a 5-week study window, followed by an online webinar. This course will cover basics of Learning Disabilities as it relates to the adult education population and will also help to clarify items often misunderstood in the learning disabilities community. Completion of the online course is required in order to attend the LD: Applications and LD: Comprehensive workshops. October 5 LACES for Teachers The LACES for Teachers training is designed to assist adult education instructors in understanding the importance and use of data collection and the data management system (LACES). The training will provide an overview of the data flow model, performing general and specific searches, and running reports as well as data analysis on the program and class level. Please note: This training is specifically designed for instructors. Student and class data entry will not be covered in LACES for Teachers. Teachers will learn how to set up a comprehensive online learning environment and maintain it. Train will include minimum requirements of modules, CCR alignment and syllabus building. This course will also involve a four-week online course for DL certification. October 12 Teacher Competencies and Teacher Evaluation Process This presentation will address the Adult Education Teacher Competencies, which were designed to promote and identify the knowledge and skills needed by adult education teachers to improve student learning and performance. Directors and Lead teachers will learn how to align Teacher Competencies with the Teacher Evaluations process, while providing them with strategies and tools to empower their teachers, so leaders and teachers can focus together on the ultimate objective: improving student learning. October 18 Success with Re-Entry This session is focused on gaining knowledge, resources, and awareness to support re-entry adult education students. Featured will be various stakeholders from within the field of re-entry and corrections, who will provide attendees with knowledge, unique insight, and different strategies on working with the re-entry population. Session ID: 361020 - Registration will begin 9/10 October 19 Customer Service This session will highlight the importance of good customer service in the workplace. Also, presenters will give direction on how to serve the customer (student or client) with excellence. The content will include strategies and tips for effective verbal and non-verbal communication, professionalism, positive attitude, telephone and e-mail etiquette, serving diverse populations, and more. In addition, Adult Education programs will learn how good customer service can contribute to student retention that can impact individual program outcomes as well as the state outcomes. October 25-26 LD Comprehensive This course will build on material learned in LD: Foundations and LD: Applications. Participants will spend time learning the top disabilities impacting the adult learning sector as well as strategies to help with barriers exhibited. Participants will practice with learning disabilities screening tools, learn how to apply data-based research and develop a comprehensive plan for identifying, screening and developing strategies and/or 504 plans to implement in the educational setting. November 28 Financial Literacy – Do you know enough to make responsible decisions? This session will provide information on financial literacy. Helpful tools, tips, strategies, and resources will be shared on spending and saving, credit and debit, identity theft, credit scores, credit reports, investing, financial planning, and more. The participants will learn about basic money management and personal finances to help their students learn how to make responsible financial decisions. We will be working on enhancing their previously built courses through the use of external tools that integrate with Canvas, as well as practicing with some of the more advanced settings available in Canvas to customize and differentiate lessons and modules. In addition, we will be looking at some exemplars of previously built, successful courses and discussing best practices when teaching Distance Learning students. The focus will be application strategies which may be used in the learning environment to help students with learning disabilities. In addition, RTI (response to intervention) strategies will be discussed to reach individuals who do not have a learning disability, but still have learning barriers due to learning difficulties. tools to aid in successful post-graduate transition. Emphasis will be based on appropriate needs-based evaluations community wrap around services, options for educational advancement and leisure activities. February 28 Success with Re-Entry This session is focused on gaining knowledge, resources, and awareness to support re-entry adult education students. APRIL Making Learning Fun with Career Development Tools and Resources April 4-5 This 2-day hands-on workshop will provide information on employability training, post-secondary education/training, life skills, and financial literacy. Helpful tools, tips, strategies, and resources will be shared on each topic. Fun activities and technology will be utilized to keep you engaged and interested in learning. The participants will learn about various career development topics to inform their students about in order to help with career planning and reaching career goals. Please bring your laptops, I-Pad, or electronic device to access the Internet and participate in class. Session ID: 361169 – Registration will begin 3/4/19. April 10 Distance Learning (DL)102 – Re-certification This Course will serve as the Re-Certification course for DL teachers certified during the 2017-2018 program year. We will be working on enhancing their previously built courses through the use of external tools that integrate with Canvas, as well as practicing with some of the more advanced settings available in Canvas to customize and differentiate lessons and modules. In addition, we will be looking at some exemplars of previously built, successful courses and discussing best practices when teaching Distance Learning students. Session ID: 361170 – Registration begins 3/4/19. April 1-12 Citizenship and Immigration Workshop USCIS will provide two full-day workshops on serving and assisting immigrant adult education students. Topics will include the naturalization process and test, federal policies, curriculum and resources for citizenship instruction. There will be one in the Northwest portion of the state and one at the AALRC. Exact dates to be determined by USCIS April 11-12 WAGE Spring Planning Meeting This two-day meeting will focus on different issues that each program faces. There will be presentations and planning time for the next year. The location of this meeting will be determined in the near future. Session ID: 361177 – Registration will begin 2/11/19. May May 3 Distance Learning (DL) 101 This course will focus on building a cohesive course on Canvas or another online platform within the Distance Learning policy. Teachers will learn how to set up a comprehensive online learning environment and maintain it. Train will include minimum requirements of modules, CCR alignment and syllabus building.
