September 2020 Beechwood A Center for Life Enrichment 44 Beach Street, North Kingstown, Rhode Island 02852 Dear Friends, I hope this greeting finds you healthy and well during this continued pandemic. We continue to monitor the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic and are making careful decisions in accordance with CDC and State guidance regarding reopening with new social distancing policies. We have been working hard to ensure your safety upon returning to Beechwood. While we hope to move forward with the programs announced in this newsletter, please note that out of necessity all programs are subject to change. Our staff has continued serving our senior population with services during these past several months. We are providing meals, both for pick-up and delivery, we are available daily by phone to assist you with questions regarding Social Security, Medicare Insurance issues, and general questions, and we have been providing exercise classes via the Town of North Kingstown’s YouTube webpage. For the month of September, we will continue to offer curbside pick-up boxed lunches. Bus transportation for grocery shopping to Dave’s Market on Tuesdays and Stop and Shop on Thursdays will begin on September 8, 2020. Reservations are required 2 full business days in advance. Details about the transportation service and new policies can be found on the back cover or by calling Missy at 268-1590. Exercise programs will continue via YouTube. For details about the virtual exercise programs, please contact Erin at 268-1596 or emcandrew@northkingstown.org. Programs when possible will be provided virtually. Age Friendly RI will continue offering a wide variety of virtual programs. If interested, please visit agefriendlyri.org. Click Virtual Community Center and Events Calendar. Two Flu Clinics will be offered this fall. Please see page 6 for details. Upon Beechwood’s reopening a number of changes will be in place reflecting policies for the protection of participants and staff. Below are some general policies, details are in this newsletter. ⚫ If you are sick, please stay home. ⚫ Pre-registration is required to enter Beechwood. At this time we are unable to open for general walk-ins. Please call 268-1590 for assistance. ⚫ Health screenings will be performed before or upon entering the building. ⚫ If you have a temperature of 100 degrees or higher you will be asked to leave. ⚫ Individuals will be asked to use hand sanitizer upon entering the building. Hand sanitizer will be provided at the front entrance. ⚫ Face masks or cloth face coverings must be worn at all times. ⚫ Face masks are available on a first come, first served basis. Please call Missy at 268-1590 for a mask. ⚫ Social distancing (6 feet apart from other people) must be maintained at all times. ⚫ Restrooms will be in operation with COVID-19 preventive protocols in place, limiting the number of individuals in the restroom at one time. ⚫ The administrative area will be locked at all times. Staff members will be located at the Welcome Desk and front entrance to assist you. We appreciate your understanding during this transitional period. New Beechwood Policies For the health, safety and well-being of all, new policies include the following: ⚫ If you are sick, please stay home. If you have a fever, cough and/or shortness of breath, contact your health care provider. ⚫ Pre-registration is required to enter Beechwood. At this time we are unable to open for general walk-ins. Registration is mandatory for boxed lunches, social services appointments, transportation and programs such as the Law Clinic and meetings with a representative from Veterans Affairs. Please see page 2 for a complete list of staff and their contact information. ⚫ When you arrive for an appointment, please remain in your vehicle and call the designated phone number listed below for instructions: Social Services Appointments 401-268-1579 Law Appointments & Veterans Affairs Appointments 401-286-1594 ⚫ Individuals registered for an appointment may enter the building no earlier than 10 minutes before the appointment (after calling for instructions). Please wait or sit in designated areas only. Individuals must exit the building immediately after the appointment. ⚫ A face mask or cloth face covering is required at all times while in the building and on the bus. ⚫ Staff will complete a health screening upon your arrival at Beechwood (log your name, take your temperature and ask health related questions). If you have a temperature of 100 degrees or higher you will be asked to leave. ⚫ You will be asked to use hand sanitizer upon entering the building. Hand sanitizer will be provided at the front entrance. The My Senior Center scan-in device will not be available. ⚫ Social distancing of 6 feet must be maintained at all times. Physical contact such as shaking hands is not permitted. ⚫ Water bottles are allowed, but no outside food may be brought into the building. ⚫ Restrooms have COVID-19 prevention protocols in place, limiting the number of individuals in the restroom at one time. ⚫ New cleaning protocols and sanitizing will impact the program schedule. The programs listed in this newsletter are subject to change. ⚫ We reserve the right to decline services to anyone who does not adhere to the policies. Frequently Asked Questions 1. What are Beechwood’s operating hours during the COVID-19 pandemic? At this time, Beechwood is not open for general walk-ins. Staff is available by appointment. Please see page 2 for a complete list of staff contact information. 2. Will exercise classes be available? Exercise classes are virtually available on the Town of North Kingstown’s YouTube webpage. You can find the webpage by searching the internet for “Town of North Kingstown YouTube.” Classes can be found on the Town’s YouTube “Home” page and under “Playlists”. 3. When will all programs resume? How will I know if a particular program is being offered? We will continue to monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and base our decisions in accordance with CDC and State guidance. You will be notified about programs by our newsletter and/or a computerized phone call from the Senior Center. 4. How will I be notified if there is a COVID-19 case at Beechwood? Contact tracing will be provided from the Senior Center and the State of Rhode Island. 5. Can I meet with Social Services to discuss my prescription drug plan? Yes, by appointment only. Special Announcement The Medicare Open Enrollment period is from Thursday, October 15, 2020 - Monday, December 7, 2020 The Medicare Open Enrollment period is the time to review your current plan and compare it to the new plans for 2021. You may have received notices with information about changes to your coverage for the coming year. It is important to read and understand these notices, so that you can decide if your coverage will continue to meet your needs or if you should change it. Each year insurance companies are able to change their formularies and premium costs. Although a Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) may cover your medications in 2020, the same plan may not cover the same medications in 2021. It is beneficial to review your plan every year. Our Social Services Department will be making individual appointments to review the new 2021 Prescription Drug Plans. If you have access to a computer, you may review the new plans at “Find Health and Drug Plans” at www.medicare.gov. Appointments are required and will be accepted beginning Thursday, October 1, 2020. Appointments are available from Thursday, October 15, 2020 through Friday, December 4, 2020. If you would like to make an appointment, please call Social Services at 268-1579. Forty-five minute in-person appointments will be offered Monday through Friday at 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Phone and email appointments are also available. All appointments require a reservation.
