Chairman’s Report July 2020 Hi Everyone, Well here we are in July and we are ready to get the club back to as near normal as possible, I believe from comments received that our members have enjoyed our last two runs and look forward to more to come. Our committee held our monthly meeting on Monday night and have arranged a good programme for the rest of this year so watch the Klaxon for coming events. I would like to thank Peter Seaton for taking over the job of convenor for our Swap Meet/Car Show/Family Day which is planned for Sunday 1 November 2020. Re our parts department, you will notice a large container appearing at the club rooms over the next few days as our current parts store is overflowing, thanks to Jack and Colin for the great work that is done in this part of the club and the fi- nancial reward that the club receives each month from this. Also in the club rooms a large set of doors are replacing the windows at front of the south end of the building. With the support of your committee and a number of our members it was decided to put these in so we can bring vehicles into the club rooms for display/entertainment/training/demonstrations, after all we are a car club! Next month, August, is our AGM so don’t forget to put your name forward for any position you would like to take on, nomination forms are available from our Secre- tary Michael so please call him. Lastly I would like to thank those who have supported me whilst I have been out of action, special thanks to Kaaren and Diane who have taken on my commitments over the last week. I am on the road to recovery and hopefully back to full strength soon. Regards Ken New Member We welcome this month Howard Tong: Welcome to our Club Howard. We all look forward to meeting you Please contact our Chairman if you have not received your name badges by our next meeting. 6
Your Klaxon Editor Paul Beck Contact Paul at klaxoninfo@gmail.com Hi Everyone, At last we seem to be underway again after what seems like a lifetime of no contact. Yvonne and I have re opened the club library again on Monday mornings along with Jack and Colin who have been also getting the parts shed in order as well. Chairman Ken got the runs moving again with a well attended run out to Allport Road which is an area I myself have not been in for several years now. It is an area I enjoyed driving in when I used to do service work and how it has changed. I spied out and quietly reminisced to myself when I spotted a property I knew and tried to remember some of the lovely people I met in my travels in the past. Thanks for the memories Ken. All good. Ken then followed through with another run at the end of the month. I did not attend this one however but I believe it was attended with about 40 cars and 70 people. This caused a bit of quick reorganizing with the re- sult the run was split into 2 parts at 2 venues. Some quick thinking there I believe. Unfortunately Ken was unable to see the fruits of his organizing due to ill health and we wish him well on his road to recovery. It has been interesting to find out who has been restoring vehicles over the break. There are quite a few projects going on within our club and as time goes on I am sure we will hear more. I have been wondering how many will make it to this years restoration awards as many of the projects are well ahead of estimated completion time. It is quite possible we may have quite a few competitors for the awards this year. Another interesting fact out of the lockdown is how many of our members have been cleaning up their sheds and bringing in their surplus parts and books. It has been keeping Yvonne and Jack quite busy. Good clean books are always welcome in our library. However if we already have your book then it will go in the library swap meet stall. Some do get rejected though if they contain mould or are in unre- pairable condition, so please don’t bring in rubbish. We are not fussy, just fair. Ken has advised he has quite a few name badges to give out. If you are a new member and have not received your badge yet, please make contact with Ken to arrange. Last of all I see Maurice Nottle has at last reached his 60 years membership and is to be presented with his badge. Over the years Maurice has kept a keen eye on the club and offered his advice when appropriate. I enjoy talking to him and reminisc- ing the years gone by. All good Maurice and congratulations, 60 years is quite an achievement. Well done. That’s about all for this month. Keep well and see you at our next gathering. Paul 7
“Redwood Valley Farm” Run 7th June We were like rabbits popping out of burrows after Bugs Bunny had put the word around that Calci Virus had disappeared. To be greeted in the Cliff Rd car-park by Chairman Ken dressed in a Tyvek coverall complete with other PPE was a good indication we were in for a well organised run. Then the sighs were audible when he said “no kissing or cuddling, boring eh” but rules like that are made to be broken. Was I the only one grate- ful everybody was wearing name-badges; many months without meetings or runs dulls the memory somewhat. No worries, it was a lovely day and the road up into the bush-clad highlands on the south of Tauranga reminded us of how much we had been deprived of during the pandem- ic. Further on, it was interesting to see that work had been interrupted on the large water reticulation scheme in the Te Puke hinter- land that is designed to alleviate water short- ages in the Papamoa area; providing Auckland sized droughts don’t eventuate. Not long afterwards we had a lovely cruise down Allport Rd which was a favoured venue in days past for serious motorsport events. The sign said “Redwood Valley Farm” so in we went and joined the queue resulting from our good Chairman’s wife Diane collecting attendance details just in case; yeah right! We have visited there before, but the tran- quillity and beauty of the place is just perfect to unwind after the interminable city traffic lights and round-abouts. There was just enough room to park the 50 or so vehicles someone counted and it only required a short walk to a down facing slope to get out of a southerly wind that was too lazy to go around you. You could hear the chatter and catch-gossip going on from us all after too much social-distancing even though the wind was sighing through the tops of the magnificent redwoods which were keeping their social distance around the perimeter. The main highlight of course was just being able to enjoy motoring our historic vehicles again, and the kissin’ and cuddlin’. Additional highlights for me were see- ing the very desirable 1924 DI Delage belonging to Tony and Deidre, finally motor- ing after troublesome dynastart issues had been sorted and with the hood stowed to soak up the winter sunshine. 8
Bill Biehler had his newly restored very pukka looking Land-Rover on its first out- ing and was able to put it to good use by pulling a stable-mate (or is that kennel- mate?) Rover (3.5L) out of a drain where Murray had miscalculated his U-turn ability on the access track. It was nice Jan took it all in her stride, but when you’ve dealt with weighty health matters burying your backside in a wet grassy hollow and hearing the wheels go round and round with no forward motion is small beer. And seeing the young smiling Smylie family boys popping out of the Model A dick- ey seat like little rabbits was real special. I probably missed many more notable occurrences, but when you’re kissin’ and cuddlin’ priorities have to be weighed up. My heart was much lighter by the end of the day to see you all haven’t forgotten what life is all about. I’m hoping we carry on the way we have re-started and I thank Ken and Diane on your behalf for their superb efforts. Alastair Jones 9
BOP VCC Brunch Run 28 June 2020 Story and Photo by Donn White A good number of people were assembled at our clubrooms by 8.45am champing at the bit to partake in a 'Brunch Run' organised by Kaaren and Jim Smylie. Due to a good turn out of members we were split into two groups for catering purposes. After driving along Cameron Road and the lower end of Pyes Pa Road one group then visited '4 Fourteen Espresso' whilst the second group ducked down Kennedy Road to eventually assemble at 'Maude Cafe'. Once we were all fed and watered everyone then assembled at the Crossing Centre carpark prior to our departure for Omokoroa. Unfortunately shortly after leaving The Lakes region our plans became a bit unstuck due to a serious road accident in the vicinity of Pahoia. The traffic on SH 2 was banked up for some distance and the Police were on hand speaking to individual drivers at the Te Puna roundabout and diverting people as necessary. We were still free to travel to Omokoroa but our intrepid group had by now become quite delayed and disjointed. However those that persevered with the run eventual- ly did assemble at the end of the Omokoroa Peninsula as planned. Some of the group managed to get signed in at the Omokoroa Boat Club where some impromp- tu imbibing became the order of the afternoon. Despite the change of plans and delay everyone was still happy to partake in a friendly run after being cooped up for some weeks due to the Covid 19 Lock Down. A 1971 Austin 1800 Ute, a 1968 Morris 1100, a 1956 Jaguar XK 140 plus a well known Ford Model A were just some of the cars that won some admiring glances outside 'Maude Cafe'. 10
A Book Review FLYWHEEL – MEMORIES OF THE OPEN ROAD by Tom Swallow, Arhur Pill and the members of the Muhlberg Motor Club Stalag IVB – Germany – 1944-1945 Paul, our Editor, reviewed this book a year or so back. The book is a fascinating reproduction of a unique collection of motoring magazines produced in WWII in a prisoner of war camp, Muhlberg, Germany. Each edition (only one copy) was drawn, some pictures pasted in and scripted by hand and circulated around the camp for members to read and pass on. I reread the book last week and the thought came to me that ‘whatever, the show must go on’ although our circumstances of Covid-19 lockdown were not as heart- breaking and harsh as back then. I reproduce a couple of paragraphs from the book under the heading ‘CLUB NEWS’. THE Xmas number of the ‘Flywheel’ was ruined by somebody upsetting a brew of cocoa over it. Many scores of hours had been put into that number, and, it was pro- duced in very cold weather, as you will remember, so please lads, a little more care- ful in future. AS our time runs out and a breath of expectancy hangs over camp a short stocktak- ing will not be amiss. Those past few months in the ‘cage’ have been hard to bear, probably harder than any of our bad spells. It found most of the camp clubs – and they were legion - gradually fading away, through general apathy, cold, hunger and the hard to combat ‘browned off’ feeling. Motoring seemed as remote as ever, with our forces still beyond the Zeigfried Line whilst on the other front the Oder remained a barrier; the cold was intense, over- crowding in the huts drove all to hopeless exasperation – in other words meetings ceased. We had maintained two club nights weekly for ten months which in itself was a camp record but we still carried on the production of the ‘Flywheel’. It is ap- propriate at this point to accord the appreciation which is due to the two ‘full time’ members of the production staff. So Bill Stobbs and you, Tom Rodger accept the thanks of not so diligent club members who, from the ‘horizontal’ read the product of your industry. This book was donated to the club library by Chris Railton. Contributed by Yvonne Beck Get your motor running...New Plymouth is all go. Revised dates have now been confirmed for the next International Festival Of Motoring. Originally planned for January 2021 Covid forced the Festival postponement but we can now announce Our new dates Sunday 16 January to Friday 21 January 2022. That gives you another whole year to get plans in place, wheels on the road and budgets sorted (who's picking what price petrol will be by then). We're looking forward to a huge turnout for this one. 11
Restoration of 1970 Series 2A Land Rover - by Paul Beck It was on our first run out from the Covid-19 lockdown that I happened to notice a 1970 Series 2 Land Rover in our midst getting along in good fashion with driver Bill Biehler at the wheel. Enquiries found this was its first day out after a 12 month restoration. I contacted Bill later to find out more. It turned out he had purchased the Land Rover off Trade me but it wasn’t until it finally arrived home he realised the ex- tent of the job ahead of him. It had been spending a lot of its life, so the story went, down the West Coast and used as a fishing vehicle. Now we all know what an inhospitable place the West Coast can be and what salt air can do to a vehicle. True to form the Land Rover was no exception. The more parts removed, the more rust was exposed. The body work while looking reasonably sound hid a lot of truths about its real condition. While I was viewing his photos he produced a pre WOF check sheet. I have never before seen a check sheet with so much scribble and crosses. However Bill in his quiet way just took it all in his stride and got down to the bones of the job ahead. Stripping parts off with the usual examination of condition etc. the rust spots were treated and re- painted, replacement panel pieces made and re- welded in place and slowly the job came together again. Right Photo: As bought and hiding it’s dirty little secrets. Doesn’t look to bad at first glance. Bottom Photo: Its secrets being revealed. Rust, dirt and the missing front vent holes exposed. On my visit the finished article just reminded me of how basic these vehicles were. They were designed as a basic workhorse with no frills. I did notice that it had a Natra car heater installed. I hadn’t seen one of those for years and it took me back to the days when most of our cars were from England and luxuries like heater and radio were considered just that— “Luxuries”. If you wanted either you had to put in a special order for them, and it cost you extra. It took the Japanese to come up with things like air con, heater and radio to be standard fit. The ducting for the air-vents went straight up through the parcel shelves exposed. The heater duct was screwed on to the dashboard. Nothing flash. Just basic 12
and functional. It was all that was required. Two vents under the windscreen that Bill found when he got the vehicle were hidden over with a panel and not visible. It also exposed a very rusty dash board as well. He remade the dashboard and got the vents back to original and able to open. So if you want fresh air you just flip a catch and open the vent. Once again, functional and basic. He did fit a few luxuries like head and door lin- ings and carpet on the floor just to make things a little quieter inside. He also padded the seats. Oooooh the luxury of it. He took me for a ride and it was no worse than expected. It actually rode as well as could be expected for a short wheelbase vehicle. A little bumpy but ok. The motor ran well and smooth, the transmission had a little noise but seemed reasonable and acceptable to me considering its age. Bill did not have to dismantle either so that was a bonus. I could see he enjoyed driving it with a continuous smile on his face. He said he told his doctor he did not have to attend a gym for exercise as a drive around the block gave him all he needed. And he could enjoy doing it. Top photo: Rusty Chassis and floor exposed 2nd from top photo: Rusty door pillar exposed Bottom right photo: Seat support rusty Bottom left photo: Seat support all done up. My summing up goes something like this. Bill has a fun vehicle. It is fun to drive and while it may spend most of its life on the tar seal it can go on the beach as well. It is basic but if he wanted luxury he would not have bought a Land Rover. There are still odd jobs to do when he gets the inclination but it is on the road, runs well, and different. Like us all, we have our passions and the Land Rover is his. It was great for me to have the opportunity to ride in it. “Thank you Bill and enjoy the ride”. 13
Restoration Has Started on My 1972 Wolseley 6 by Stephen Belcher Since the middle of November 2019, the car has been stripped down, to the body shell. All panels stripped of paint to the steel, body work has showed to be structurally sound, little rust was found to non structural parts of the body, but many dents found on every panel. The worst rust was all the lower four door panels and the best way to sort out was to totally remove the outer skin panels, up to 16mls below the swage line. Once the skins were removed I was then able to cut away the rust to the bottom of the frames, and then splice and weld the new panel pieces, that were measured and folded to shape. After these were finished I then sprayed the inside of the door frames and new skins with epoxy primer, before spot welding to secure them, and folding edges round the frame flanges, as per factory. The panels were finally attached to the 16ml overlap with panel bond adhesive. Everything has now had its guide coat blocking, and final defects attended to and three coats of epoxy high build undercoat applied. Now ready for its final rub down, and finish coats. The colour is a metallic copper brown, acrylic lacquer and will be finished off with five coats of clear, with a gold pin stripe. I have already finish coated the in- side of the door jambs, bonnet boot lid and floor pan. I have de-rusted, primed and painted all components, such as fuel tank, bumper brackets, radiator all finished in factory gloss black 2K enamel, the list of these items is endless. Have refurbished the wiper motor electric fan and heater unit. I am now ready to remove engine and bay components so as to respray the engine bay, after which I will then refurbish the ex- haust brakes etc. before final respray and assembly. I will give a report later, when I get to the final stage of assembly. 14
