“THE CITIZENS POST” DAVO’S DIARY Good afternoon and a warm welcome today to Yate Town for this afternoons league match, it starts a ridiculous period of 5 games in 9 days that will define our season really, circumstances have slightly transpired against us with weather and postponements at bad times and it has resulted in this slightly farcical schedule of games, we will however deal with it and show the attitude that our lads have done all season! Yate are a decent side in with a shout themselves and so we will need to be ready for it! I wish them a pleasant stay and safe journey home afterwards. It has been frustrating for us with the 2 games last weekend being called off and this meant we could not fit a midweek game in this week, so despite all the games to play we have been kicking our heels for 2 further weeks since our unlucky defeat against Evesham, we will be looking to put that right today, although a similar performance will be what we are after!! We have trained very hard and very well since that game and we are really looking forward to today’s match! Player news, it’s been a fairly eventful week really, good news is Joe Cook is now back in the squad albeit short of any match fitness at all! Also on the plus side we have been able to get Andy Jenkinson added to the squad for some of the remaining games, we do not normally like that sort of scenario but Andy is doing this at no real cost to the club and shows the measure of the lad and he is very well liked in the dressing room and so I’m delighted we will have him! On the negative at this crucial time we have agreed to release Pat Cox, I will not go into the full details and reasons behind the decision, however it was made by myself and Dave with the best interests of the club and the rest of the squad, so despite going back a long way with Coxy it was the only real decision we could make for all parties, I thank him for his efforts this year massively and wish him well. Give the lads a really big shout today, we will need it as Yate are a good side, plus we have to embark on a monumental week ahead with 3 away games in 5 days against sides in the top 6! We are not fearful of anyone though and we will go and give this week a right good go! Up the citizens!!! Davo
“THE CITIZENS POST” CHAIRMAN’S COMMENTS Today we will play our first match in a fortnight and the first home game in three weeks. In that game we beat Slimbridge by three goals to nil. And now we have four games in eight days! Oh, the joys of football at this time of year and in the recent weather conditions. This afternoon we welcome the players, management, fans and officials of Yate Town here to the Simplyhealth City Ground. Yate also haven’t played since the 27th March. We look forward to a good game now that we are able to get back to playing football. Off the pitch, we have now reached a broad agreement on our way forward next season. We are finalising the detail and will be announcing our plans to the Committee at our next committee meeting on Monday 16th April. We will then go public. ENJOY THE GAME THIS AFTERNOON. Regards Paul Murray Chairman, Winchester City Football Club
“THE CITIZENS POST” IN THE OPPOSITION DUGOUT…YATE TOWN CLUB HISTORY Yate Town FC began life as Yate Rovers in 1906, and Rovers won the Glos F.A. Junior Cup in 1913-14. World War One then intervened, and although Rovers reformed after the war, they later disbanded, probably in the early thirties. In 1933-34 season Yate Y.M.C.A. was formed and they entered the Bristol and District Division 5 under the captaincy of Arthur Gould. Goalkeeper Frank Boulton, one of four brothers in this team, later played for Arsenal. The team was promoted to Division 3 at the end of the following season. After the Second World War, they reformed, still known as Yate YMCA, playing in the Bristol and District League and the Avon Premier Combination. Yate YMCA were amongst the founders of the Gloucester County League in 1958 and the following year they dropped the YMCA from their title in favour of Town. A major step forward in the club’s progress occurred in 1983 when they obtained membership of the Hellenic League and moved on to the first step of the non-League pyramid system. Promotion to the Premier Division was soon accomplished when at the conclusion of the 1984/85 season Yate Town finished runners-up behind Pegasus Juniors in Division One. The following season they won the Hellenic Premier League finishing the campaign unbeaten at home. That successful formula continued into the 1988/89 season when they retained the Championship crown, losing just one league game. A second prize was obtained in the shape of the Gloucestershire Challenge Trophy. In the quest for further soccer prestige, Yate Town obtained election to the Southern League, Southern Division in 1989. Yate Town moved to their present ground in Lodge Road in 1984 having previously played at Yate Aerodrome (1954-1960) and Sunnyside Lane (1960-84) to prepare for the higher standard of football. Covered accommodation was erected in 1987 and floodlighting in 1988. The 1993/94 season was disappointing as Yate finished second from bottom in the Midland Division. Luckily relegation was avoided but restructuring of the Southern League meant that the club was switched back to the Southern Division after three seasons in the Midland. The 1994/95 season, their first in the Southern Division, saw Yate make a terrible start which lead to long serving manager, Pete Jackson, being relieved of his duties. The appointment of former Bristol Rovers favourites Ian Alexander and Phil Purnell, as Manager and Assistant, led to an immediate upturn in fortunes. The club enjoyed an excellent end of season run which saw them finish in sixteenth position. They again reached the final of the Gloucester Senior Cup losing on penalties after extra time to Cheltenham Town. Improvement continued in the 1995/96 season with a young squad enjoying their best campaign for a long time, finishing in the top half of the Southern League. The club celebrated its Golden Jubilee in season 1996/97. During the 1997/98 close season John Freeguard was appointed Manager but after obtaining just two victories from seventeen games he resigned and was replaced by Martin Durnell, Manager of Yates very successful Youth Team, assisted by Club Captain Danny Iddles. Despite these changes the Club still finished in the basement spot, but as before, relegation was avoided due to the restructuring of the Southern League. The 1998/99 season a young side finished 20th in the Southern League. The 1999/2000 season saw Yate Town return to the Midland Division for the first time for six seasons due to the regionalisation of the Midland and Southern Division into Western and Eastern Divisions. Unfortunately, they finished well adrift and were relegated to the Hellenic League. Manager Martin Durnell resigned and was replaced by former players Gary Hewlett and Richard Thompson who became Joint Player Managers. After a
poor start to the 2000/01 season Yate Town enjoyed a long run of victories that saw them finish in third place in the league. The following two seasons saw Yate finish third and second behind eventual champions North Leigh. North Leigh did not take up the promotion place available so Yate were again returned to the Southern League level of non-league football. After a poor start to the 2003-04 season, Yate improved and consolidated Southern League status by finishing in sixteenth position. Yate enjoyed their most successful season in 2004-05. They finished Runners-up in Division One West, and secured promotion to the Southern League Premier Division for the first time. Additionally, they won the Glos F.A. Senior Challenge Cup for the first time in their history, beating Bristol Rovers 2:0 in the final at the Memorial Stadium. They had previously defeated Bristol City and Forest Green Rovers en route to the final. Town exceeded all expectations 2005-2006 season, their first in the Premier Division. Despite another poor start, they finished in a highly creditable sixth position, and also retained the G.F.A. Senior Cup when beating Cheltenham Town in the Final. In 2006-2007 Yate were again challenging for a play-off spot for much of the time, but were badly hit by injuries in the final few weeks, which led to a poor run of results, and Town finished in a mid-table position. In 2007-2008 season Yate continued to establish themselves as a Premier Division Club, and finally finished in an encouraging tenth position. A poor run of results which saw Yate gain only two wins in twenty League matches and slide into a relegation position, led to Richard Thompson being relieved of his duties in February 2009 and Lee Barlass, who had been Richard's Assistant for several seasons, also left the Club. Dave Mogg, formerly Manager at Hallen F.C. and Assistant Manager at Taunton Town and Weston Super Mare was then appointed as Manager. Despite his best efforts, the Club could not climb out of the relegation zone and are now in the South & West Division. The 2009-10 season saw a much changed and relatively inexperienced squad finish in a respectable mid table position. Despite the addition of several experienced players, the 2010-11 season saw little progress being made under David Mogg, and after two years in charge he was replaced as manager by Rob Cousins, initially in a caretaker capacity. Performances quickly improved, and Rob was soon appointed as permanent manager. A string of good performances at the end of last season led to us regaining the Glos. F.A. Senior Challenge Cup, beating Cheltenham Town Reserves 3-2 in the Final, having beaten Bristol City Reserves in the Semi-Final. We again finished in a mid-table position in the league. In the 2011-2012 season, we made a very poor start to the League campaign, although making some progress in both F.A. Cup and F.A. Trophy. Results improved considerably after the first third of the season, although we finished in the bottom half of the table. The 2013-14 season was notable for a superb run in the FA Cup, where we made it into the First-Round Proper for the first time. Despite a series of poor results in the League, we excelled in the FA Cup, and victories against Poole Town, Winchester City, Oxford City and North Leigh saw us drawn at home to Conference giants Newport County in the Final Qualifying Round. We were leading 3-1 as the tie approached injury time, but two late goals saw Newport secure a 3-3 draw after an excellent performance. Few people gave us a chance in the replay against a team which eventually gained promotion to the Football League, but a never to be forgotten night saw us fight back from being a goal down to equalise and then two goals in extra time gave us a tremendous 3-1 victory. This amazing performance earned us a trip to neighbouring Football League Club, Cheltenham Town in the First-Round Proper, and we again excelled ourselves before losing 3-0. This Cup run was the catalyst for much improved results in the League, and we eventually finished just outside the Play Offs in sixth position. Unfortunately, we became a victim of our own success, and the close season saw the departure of most that squad. During the 2013/2014 season, the new look squad acquitted themselves very well. After an inconsistent start, a series of good results saw us briefly threaten to make the play -offs, before we ended the season in a creditable ninth position. We also had another decent run in the FA Cup, before losing to Gloucester City in the third qualifying round replay. The 2014-15 season saw us struggle for consistency, which led to Rob Cousins and Michael Meaker being replaced by Craig Laird, assisted by Rob Boyd in March 2015. Several experienced and high profile signings were introduced by Craig for the 2015-16 season, but unfortunately that campaign proved very disappointing, and led to another change in management, with Paul Britton, assisted by John Lester, being appointed before the start of last season. They were targeted with introducing new, younger players into the team; this obviously meant that last season was one of transition, as players were gradually brought into the squad throughout the season, and by the end of it there was virtually a new look young team in place, which shows great promise for
the future. The great majority of these players have returned for the 2017-18 season, and these have been augmented by further additions to the squad during the close season. “THE CITIZENS POST” YATE TOWN PLAYER PROFILES Nigel Hawkins Director of Football and Coach. 25 “THE CITIZENS POST” MALCOLM’S MUSINGS We welcome Yate to Winchester for today’s game. This will be the ninth ever meeting between the clubs, with the record showing 3 wins each and 2 draws, with the 7 league games showing 5 home wins and 2 draws, and we hope that after today the record of the home team in this fixture looks better still. Earlier in the season we drew 1-1 at Yate having fallen behind late in the first half through Lewis Leigh-Gilchrist having had plenty of chances to take the lead before then, but Pat Cox levelled the scores in the second half. Last season’s match at Yate which we lost 1-0 was Ian Saunders’s last match as Winchester manager, before he was replaced by Craig Davis. However, in that game we created plenty of chances, but Harvey Rivers performed superbly in the home goal. Unusually for a goalkeeper Harvey has netted two goals at this level while between the posts, one of them being against Cirencester earlier in the season when a free kick from inside his own half went in, and the other in 2013 from a long clearance whilst playing for Bishops Cleeve. I first saw Yate play at Hounslow at the end of the 1986/87 season. Their team contained the experienced Kevin Prue, but they were very much a mid-table side that season, but in the next two seasons they were Premier Division champions and were promoted to the Southern League. Their first spell in the Southern League lasted 11 years, but after finishing bottom of the table twice in three seasons they were relegated back to the Hellenic League. However, after achieving positions of 3rd, 3rd and 2nd they were promoted back again and have remained at this level ever since, and in fact from 2005/06 to 2008/09 played in the Premier Division, achieving 6th position in their first season. In 2012/13 they reached the 1st round proper of the F A Cup beating a Newport County side who were promoted to the football league that season in the 4th qualifying round, and in 1991/92 reached the 5th round proper of the F A Vase. Prior to joining the Hellenic League, they were founder members of the Gloucestershire County League although originally being known as Yate YMCA and prior to that Yate Rovers. Under former Bitton boss Paul Britton they only obtained three points from their first seven league games, but then surprised Taunton by beating them 4-1 on their own pitch, which at the time of writing represented Taunton’s only league defeat of the season. Yate’s form since Christmas has been much better and at the time of writing they stand on the fringes of the playoff race having only lost one away league game since September. Their chairman is Colin Pick whose company Picksons began trading in 1979 and the name Picksons has featured in both Badminton Picksons and Almondsbury Picksons who both competed in the Hellenic League, the last-named achieving promotion and third place in the Premier Division. Colin appears to be an ambitious chairman determined to take his club forward. In their last four seasons they have finished 6th, 9th, 6th, 16th and 18th, while their reserves have been playing in the Gloucestershire County League for the last 13 years, finishing in the top half of the table in the first seven of these.
26 “THE CITIZENS POST” MATCH REPORT WCFC 3-0 SLIMBRIDGE BY MALCOLM CLARKE Winchester returned to winning ways with a 3-0 home victory against Slimbridge. Slimbridge had beaten Winchester 2-0 at home earlier in the season, but had been finding results hard to come by in recent weeks and in form bottom club Bishops Cleeve are now within touching distance of them, but at this stage of the season teams at the wrong end of the table are fighting for every point as Winchester have noticed in recent weeks. Winchester made two changes to the starting line-up from the Hampshire Senior Cup semi-final with Blackfield and Langley with Dan Williamson and Joe Hayward replacing Adam Tomasso and Simba Mlambo, with the last named on the bench. There was a welcomed return to the bench for Liam Gilbert who has been out injured for several weeks. The crowd of 84 was one of the lowest of the season, but with Eastleigh and Basingstoke both being at home to well supported former football league clubs and the bitterly cold weather contributing towards this. There was a strong wind which had an influence on the game and it was Winchester who had the wind advantage in the first half and the visitors in the second. Early on Joe Hayward made an important interception, but Winchester took the lead in the 6th minute when a free kick was awarded for a foul on Oli Bailey. Jamie Barron dummied and allowed player manager Craig Davis to strike a shot which was sufficiently well struck to prevent the outstretched left hand of Slimbridge goalkeeper Oliver Hall keeping the ball out of the net. It was almost 2-0 when Pat Cox set up Rob Carr. but Hall made an excellent save, tipping Carr's effort over the bar for a corner, with Winchester hitting the underside of the bar from the resulting corner. Hall also made a good save from Cox, and again from the corner that followed Winchester hit the woodwork. It was not all one-way traffic with Ryan Pryce in the home goal having to save from Marley Thomas and Jamie Martin. Winchester however scored a second in the 27th minute when Joe Hayward played the ball into the box from the right-hand side with the cross eventually resulting in the ball being deflected past his own goalkeeper by Henry Birkett. Before half time, Hall made a further good save this time from Josh Harfield. Generally, the first half was Winchester's, although Slimbridge were still a threat on the break and ready to capitalise on any misplaced passes. With the wind advantage in the second half Slimbridge began the half strongly and Pryce had to save from Joe Wilton and also make another save, while at the other end Hall had to make a routine save from a Pat Cox header from a Williamson cross. Slimbridge however had an excellent chance to get a goal back when they were awarded a penalty for a foul which could be considered a bit harsh, but Pryce saved Thomas's spot kick. Winchester however took full advantage of that let off and made the game safe in the 77th minute when Pat Cox headed home a cross from Ollie Griggs and they had the better chances to score further goals in the remainder of the game. In the second half Winchester introduced Mlambo, Josh McCormick and Joe Sowden as substitutes and all three helped them consolidate their lead.
27 “THE CITIZENS POST” MATCH REPORT EVESHAM UNITED 1-0 WCFC BY MALCOLM CLARKE Winchester were beaten 1-0 at Evesham and drop to 11th place in a closely contested promotion race, but with 24 points still to play for and things so tight in the playoff zone they are still very much in the race for a playoff place, especially as they were unlucky to lose at Evesham. Evesham are in their 26th successive season as a Southern League club, with four of these seasons being spent in the Premier Division. They have a spacious clubhouse, plenty of experienced players including former Salisbury goalkeeper Kevin Sawyer, and attracted a crowd of over 200 for Saturday's game. Winchester's starting eleven plus substitutes was the same as that which played the previous Saturday against Slimbridge. In the first minute of the game Winchester goalkeeper Ryan Pryce had to save from Jordan Bryan following a cross from Garyn Preen, while a powerful shot from Lewis Powell was wide as were a couple of other shots from the home side were just off target. Winchester however came more into the game as the half progressed. From an Oli Bailey, cross Pat Cox shot over, while Rob Carr hit the outside of the post following good work from Cox. They also had a penalty appeal turned down and Pat Cox was just unable to keep the ball in play despite a valiant effort to reach the ball, when a cross would have put the ball across the goal. At the other end, Matt Liddiard had a shot saved and Paul Fahy who could come on as substitute midway through the first half on his last appearance for the club before moving to Finland was unable to get his header on target and the teams when into interval with the deadlock yet to be broken. In the second half from a Carr cross Oli Bailey shot just wide, while Bailey had a shot saved by Sawyer. Shortly after this Matt Bennett put in a good cross for the home team and their skipper Adam Mann was on hand to score. Winchester then had more than 35 minutes to draw level, but whenever they threatened Kevin Sawyer was a commanding figure and he did not really look like being beaten. Jamie Barron was only just off target with a free kick, but probably the nearest we came to a further goal was when Andy Lewis had an effort saved by Pryce and the follow up shot was blocked at the expense of a corner. Winchester had the welcome sight of Liam Gilbert coming on as substitute for Olly Griggs who had been booked and was on his final warning, but despite giving a good account of themselves Winchester suffered a defeat to one of their playoff rivals.
