EMEWS Notes from EMOA Meeting on 18th November 2019 BO Qualification Database - Club Reps reported on their approach to the BO qualification database. NOC had updated their members’ entries and fed the information to BO, while DVO and LEI are still in progress with theirs, and LOG have still to action. EM Junior Squad - Following on from the request for club reps to contact Ant / Ann-Marie with potential new members for the Junior Squad, the squad have now some new members from DVO and NOC. EMJOS are set to receive an unbudgetted refund of £240 relating to last year's JIRCS accommodation. JIRCS JIRCS was full of highs and lows. We had both Rachel Duckworth and the Boys Relay team on the podium. Unfortunately the girls had an incomplete team, so in the end the EMOA Junior Squad were 8th overall, which probably reflects the squad’s realistic position. Selections to Junior Competitions Jake O’Donnell and Rachel Duckworth have been selected for the Junior Home Internationals. Training October – There was a Training day with WMOA for New Forest and then attend the November Classic. November – Hawkshead (Lake District) Training weekend. December – Martinshaw – Developmental orienteers session. There will also be a training session with YHOA. January – Further Training day being planned. February – Possibly a major joint session with the Junior Squads from YHOA, WMOA and EMOA. Other The Junior Squad are organising the Strawberry Hill event early in the new year and this is all under control. The Junior Squad are planning to attend the Junior Tio Mila at the beginning of August in Sweden. There are at least 5 or 6 juniors interested in attending, and will share with the WMOA Junior Squad. Any surplus from the Strawberry Hill event will be used to fund this trip. Thanks - Formal thanks and a card had been sent to Paul Murgatroyd for his work in setting up and running the EMOA Urban League and also to Mark Webster for all his work as Financial Secretary. Page 4
EMEWS Risks to Financial Accounts through extreme weather - There is a risk to reduced levy income this year given the unprecedented poor weather and consequent cancellation of events (in addition there is also the cancellation of the Midland Champs due to environmental concerns of the landowners). At this time Paul does not foresee a material impact on the forecast financial performance. Funding Request – A funding request was received from Peter Hodkinson for a series of GB overseas races (World Champs – Norway in August; World Cup 3 – Switzerland in September and World Cup 4 – China in October). The committee agreed to the usual funding of 1/3 of the costs providing Peter provided a report on each event for EMEWS. Future Funding Requests – Going forward with limited budgets available the committee will also request details of other bodies approached for funding. Development Day - The last Development Day was 24Nov18, and the last Development Conference was Spring 2017. Ranald believes there is a need for a Planner’s course already and will look into what is most appropriate to organise going forward. Ranald asked club reps to determine requirements for Planners and Controllers courses (for Grade C controller or upgrading to Grade B). The Development Conference could include Planners, Controllers, Organisers and potentially Mappers. Ranald will look at setting up something for either June or Autumn next year. BO Rules - Chris Phillips reported that there will be an updated set of BO rules in January. Individual changes should not really be read in isolation from other changes but the main things to be aware of is that Level B events in future will need an out of region controller (level C events should be an out of club controller) – early 2020 the old rules will still apply. Coaching - All of the 5 EM members who were training to be L2 Coaches have now completed their qualifications with Derek Herd (LEI), Stuart Swalwell (DVO) and Anthony Squire (NOC) all completing their assessments (Sal Chaffey and John Mather have already qualified). Loss of Event from EMOA League 2019 - we have lost the recent LEI event due to flooding but otherwise all other events are OK. EMOA League Prizegiving - Prizegiving for the EMOA 2019 League is currently planned to be at Bramcote event on 8th Feb. Future Events: (i) 13 Jun 2020 – East Midlands Scope Champs – DVO - Carsington (ii) 10 Oct 2020 – British Schools Score Champs – DVO – Shipley Park (iii) 22 Nov 2020 – East Midlands Champs – LEI – Bradgate (iv) 28 Feb 2021 – East Midland Champs – DVO – Stanton Moor (v) 14 Mar 2021 – CompassSport Cup First Round – LEI - Wakerley (vi) 4 Jul 2021 - Yvette Baker Trophy Final 2021 – LEI - Irchester. (vii) 17 Oct 2021 – CompassSport Cup Final 2021 – DVO – Chatsworth (viii) 30 Jan 2022 – Midland Champs – NOC -Sherwood Page 5
EMEWS Midland Champs - 2020 DVO Midland Champs has had to be cancelled due to environmental concerns of landowner. DVO are planning to host a level C event at Lindop on same date instead (which will be added to the EMOA League). NOC had planned to host a Middle Distance event to tie in with the Midland Champs. This event will still go ahead and be added to the EMOA League. EMOA Urban League 2020 – The Hypervets class will be added for all events. Helpers at Events - Hilary Palmer mentioned that at many events helpers gets half price entry fees. However, this is no use to the Planner, Organiser and controller who are the main officials. SYO give a free run at a future event to their Planners, Organisers and Controllers which may be a good way to provide some reward for taking on these roles. Another suggestion was to give the officials a lottery ticket! SmartPhone Orienteering - John Hurley stated that DVO are organising a Night Urban Event on 4th December using a SmartPhone app on phones instead of controls. See separate report. Access to MoD Land - the access fees for MoD Land in the National agreement have gone up significantly. Access to Forestry Commission Land - the Forestry Commission are rolling out a new regime which could mean that orienteering will only be able to use Forestry Commission areas in Oct/Nov/Dec. Day Membership - the BO Board are considering introducing a day membership of BO so that insurance cover is granted to all attendees at events (this would need to be brought up at the BO AGM). Mapping Awards - Dave Olivant reported that the annual Mapping awards will be announced for 2019 shortly and there has been very little representation of EMOA in these awards. He would encourage clubs to submit nominations for EMOA Mappers. There are 4 categories of award (Urban, Best Map, Professional Map, Contributions to Mapping). Andy Clayton - John Hurley reported further bad news as another previous EMOA Official had died. Andy Clayton who was Secretary to EMOA from 1988-1991 had a heart attack while out walking in New Zealand where he lived. (He was a DVO member and was also a Team Manager for the British Team) Dates and venues for future meetings - All meetings to be held at the Pace Room, St Mary’s Church, Clifton Village, Nottinghamshire at 7.30 p.m. The next meeting is Monday 20th January 2020. The following meeting is scheduled to be held on Monday 27th April 2020. All members are welcome to attend committee meetings if they wish to do so. ----ooo---- Page 6

Pauline Olivant Trustee Orienteering Foundation 01623 792336 p.olivant@btinternet.com ----oooo---- DVO SmartPhone Orienteering DVO hosted it’s first smartphone orienteering event in Duffield on 4th December. The advantage of smartphone orienteering is that there are no controls to put out. However, what you do need is a smartphone. The event was organised by the Chaffeys and they had gone round Duffield and identified suitable locations for controls. These were then programmed in to the Maprun app. Competitors then downloaded the Maprun app to their phone and downloaded the specific DVO event to their smartphone. This being the first time DVO had ever done this the map was available with all controls for competitors to look at before they arrived at the event. However, it is possible to create a code that is only available to competitors when they start, so they only Page 8
EMEWS see the map when they reach the start. The event was a score event with all controls scoring the same points. Most of the controls were on roads or tracks in the village but a few were on footpaths through fields round the edge of the village. You could use a paper map, or simply use the map on your phone. Given the event was scheduled for a Wednesday evening on a dark, damp December night we were unsure how many would try this new form of orienteering. As it was we had 34 competitive runs ranging from 10 to 70 year olds. The event was a score event. On reaching the start triangle your phone beeped to tell you that you were underway, then as you reached the centre of each circle the phone beeped again to tell you that you had reached the site (no controls were put out, it just relied on your phone). We did find some phones picked up the sites slightly better than others, but not a major difference. Then on reaching the finish you were timed as completing your run. Note: you need to ensure you don’t run through the finish on any of your routes otherwise you would be recorded as finishing early. Once finished you just uploaded your run to Maprun and all the results and your GPS route was immediately available. Many competitors then retired to a local hostelry to compare their routes. The organisers could also join as they had no controls to collect or results to collate as it was all done automatically. The event was deemed a success and the plan is to host a series of further events in the Spring (yet to be arranged). Page 9
EMEWS Andy Clayton 1953–2019 Former DVO member Andy Clayton – who with his wife Roz emigrated to New Zealand in 1996 – died from a heart attack on November 9th whilst out walking in the Hanmer forest. Andy and Roz started orienteering and joined DVO in 1977, shortly after they had moved to the area to take up posts as PE teachers. I can’t trace their first events, but by February 1978 they were competing in the Midlands Championships in Sherwood Forest where Andy was 87th out of 128 on M21C (and there were 137 runners in M21A and 143 in M21B). At the White Rose Relays in August 1978 Andy, Roz and myself formed a team which came 7th out of 50 in the B class. It soon became clear that Roz had found a sport in which she was capable of competing at the highest level. She was invited to join the British Squad in 1979 and was selected for the British team in the World Championships in 1981/83/85/87/89, achieving a best individual 30th place and being part of a relay team placed 5th. Andy knew that he wouldn’t be troubling the selectors but was happy to provide what support he could, accompanying Roz on many trips to events overseas and acting as Chair of the BOF International Committee 1984–86 and again 1989–91 and (I think) as Team Manager on occasion. Andy himself preferred shorter distance races and would generally run in the B or S class at major competitions. He would have been well suited to the middle and sprint formats which have now become more common. He enjoyed relays and had another good relay result at the Mammoth weekend in 1982, running with Mike Gardner and Steve Kimberley to win the trophy for the first competitive team in the Open class. Individual results included 2nd in M35S at Strines Badge Event January 1991, 2nd in M35S just 3 minutes down at Star Posts National Event March 1991, and 7th in M40S at the British Championships at Brown Clee in April 1993. In 1992 he was 6th in the DVO Club Championships. Photo from Andy’s order of service, captioned ‘The grizzly bear with a heart of gold’ Andy also performed various other roles including secretary of East Midlands OA 1978–81 and Equipment Officer for both the 1982 British Championships at Shining Cliff and the 1991 JK weekend at Clumber Park and Shining Cliff. In 1981 he organised and planned the DVO Club Championships at Annesley. In 1985 he was appointed as DVO Press Officer. After Roz retired from international competition, the couple took a gap year for a round-the-world expedition. They reached New Zealand and liked it so much that Page 10
EMEWS they decided to emigrate there. They made a final appearance for DVO at the British Champs weekend near Oban in May 1996. Andy placed 17th on M40S and then formed part of a Medium Open team with Sue Russell and Dave Brodie which did not do well, but was not last. EMEWS Fixtures This fixture list is intended to list all major events in the UK, and all East Midlands events. It includes all the information available to me about the event at the time of going to press. Details on entry are normally available on the club sites. Unless otherwise stated, Local events offer entry on the day (EOD) to a range of colour coded courses with start times from 10:30 to 12:30. Some will provide a wider range of courses than others. Regional events provide colour coded within which age classes can be run. National events provide a range of age related courses and are normally entered in advance. The OS map reference is either the car park or point from which the event will be signposted. The list is based on BOF registration, but events are sometimes cancelled. If you are uncertain of whether an event will be on, check with the organiser. The editor takes no responsibility for wasted journeys.
