Toogoom Chatter - June 2021 Page 12 …… latest from Project Linus Hello everyone, Well, winter has officially arrived but we've been getting a taste of it for a few weeks now. Days are beautiful, mornings just a bit hard to get out of bed. I've often spoken about Meg our dear Linus Lady who passed away some years ago. Meg was our “applique" Lady, and would ask the other Ladies what applique blocks would they like to include in their designs. Recently, Norma discovered five of these appliqued blocks in one of our many boxes. She took them home and incorporated them into a beautiful quilt. The day she brought the finished quilt in, a lady called in to ask us if we would make a quilt for Ava, a little local girl who is suffering from a serious medical condition. Her mother, Tiffiany (hairdresser) would be known to many of you. In discussion we realised that Ava is the great-granddaughter of Meg! What a wonderful heartwarming coincidence. The finished quilt was taken to the Brisbane Hospital by a family member to be given to Ava. She was thrilled with it! The most recent of deliveries to the Brisbane children's hospital was done by Zamie - 30 quilts. Thank you, Zamie. We were recently given a large donation of very good quality fabrics. An audit of our fabric boxes was done recently resulting in a top-up purchase of homespun fabrics. In the photo to the right, you can see Lorraine and Norma tackling a rather boring but very helpful task, sorting out a large pile of very small scraps. The hospital gets a lot of teenage boy patients. As a mother of 2 boys and 3 girls, I know why! So they are sorting out scraps which could be used in teenage boy quilts. In Volunteer Week, the ladies celebrated being part of that group with a special afternoon tea including a cheeseboard and chocolates. Yum! In this photo, Kathryn and Barbara are working at the cutting table with Zamie quilting in the background. (talking to David Wardley– Ed.) If you have any enquiries about Linus and our work please ring Lorraine on 0421 498 654. God bless, stay safe, Claire D Visit our website and download your own copy of the Chatter - www.toogoomcommunity.com.au

Toogoom Chatter - June 2021 Page 16 It has been many years since the Fraser Coast Branch of Wildlife Queensland has invited a reptile expert to speak in our libraries. Fortunately, the drought has broken. Chris Muller, snake catcher and fauna relocator, will be speaking in the Hervey Bay Library on June 18 and in the Maryborough Library on June 25 at 1pm for both centres. Chris’s life has been dedicated to the welfare of wildlife. From bringing home lizards, turtles and snakes as a child to working voluntarily as a zoological laboratory technician in the Queensland Museum as a teenager, he was destined to a life involved with fauna welfare. His first experience of being a snake rescuer, lasting ten years, occurred when he was placed on the National Parks and Wildlife list which enabled him to relocate snakes from homes and other places not totally amenable to reptiles. After being a tour guide on Fraser Island for eight years, he worked in Central Queensland as a fauna spotter. It was in this job, his knowledge of species widened and where he had the unfortunate experience of seeing wildlife evicted from their homes. Now resident in Hervey Bay, he continues his work as a spotter and allocates his time between snake catching and fauna spotting as well as his work in the disability sector Bookings for Chris’s talk can be made by phoning the Library on 41974220. Our members have been working hard to maintain and rejuvenate the gardens for all to enjoy. Weeding, mulching, propagating and planting. It helps showcase our community and provides a welcoming atmosphere to those arriving and departing, or travelling through Howard. The cooler months generally mean growth is slower, with the exception of weeds!!!! It is too cool to sow seeds and avoid pruning as you will only cut off newly forming buds. Seeds sown in autumn should be coming along, as winter is normally our drier time, keep up the water. Those rose lovers will be planting their bare rooted roses. In the vegetable garden, peas, spinach, broad beans and lettuce are some that don’t mind the cooler weather. We are fortunate to have milder winters and some vegetables and flowers still grow. Our next meeting is on the 9th June at 10am CWA Hall Howard. Membership is only $5 for the year. We have a fun and knowledgeable group, and welcome new members to join. Look forward to seeing you all on the 9th June.
