For further information please contact Bob Leeson: 0362 296006 Bob Leeson Editor’s notes The drive home from the Bunnings father’s day get together, was so cold I wondered how the sports car developed for so many years in a country that probably invented cold weather, the adage of iron men (and women) and wooden ships came to mind, (I must be a play dough variety?) how heaters were not fitted at a very early stage is a total mystery as even an air cooled engine can have its cooling medium transferred to somewhere useful like keeping the driver and even the passengers from becoming iceblocks so vehicles so prone to overheating could have had the wasted warm air delivered to potential road hazards like solid blocks impersonating drivers. For all that the evening was well organised, successful and interesting. Looking at the latest potential addition to the sports car, an electric MG, seems to be one very expensive, fast, slot car, makes one wonder where the oil is going to leak from though, maybe a special refillable tank is fitted just to satisfy tradition? We then drove towards Meander, turning right and following a lovely valley with the mountains to the left covered in mist(not snow as ordered) finishing up at the Mole Creek Hotel where ten of our MG friends from the North West joined us. We all had a lovely Christmas meal and much laughter and chatter. What a lovely way to spend a cold winters than with likeminded friends! Robyn Keogh. 20th August Lunch Run Under clear sunny but cool conditions fifteen cars assembled at the Launceston Motor Museum for a morning run followed by lunch. Some were brave enough to have the tops down. It was great to see some of our new members getting involved and enjoying the run. We left the museum and travelled down the West Tamar Highway to reassemble at the Bridgenorth Road turn off. It was then up Bridgenorth Road right into Long Plains Road through till we joined the Exeter Highway and turned left. We then travelled through Frankford and turned onto the Holwell Road with plenty of corners and bends with a Page 17
MG Car Club of Tasmania – MG Monthly Motoring News, September 2017 fantastic view from the top of hill before descending into Beaconsfield. It was then a short run through Beauty Point to our lunch destination at the Cove Restaurant. After some hurried additional seating was arranged to cater for a few extra members it was a great meal with good company was enjoyed by all. MG Car Club of Tasmania – MG Monthly Motoring News, September 2017 Club Captain August was a relatively quiet month again with the only competition event being round 6 of the State motorkhana series at Latrobe. Only 22 hardy souls braved the cool but fine conditions for the penultimate round. @ easy & 2 not so easy patterns made for some exciting runs. The winners time of 100.22 secs with 2 nd place 0.29 secs behind and 3rd place a further 2.49 secs behind. 9 of the 22 entrants were MG members with some travelling up from Hobart, very commendable. Our next “competition” event is the Test & Tune day at Baskerville on Sept. 10. The significant event for September is the annual Baskerville Historic race meeting to be held over the weekend of 22nd to 24th. Entries will be closed by the time this goes to print but am told a strong interstate contingent will be in attendance. Come along and support this as funds are still being raised to cover the shortfall in development costs. Our October events consist of a club day at Symmons Plains on Oct 1 and later in the month, a combined clubs (MGCC & Mini) day at Baskerville. Come and have some fun in a safe & friendly environment. Blowing the cobwebs does wonders for both car and driver! The November event worth noting is our annual Concours and AGM, this year being held in Launceston. For those of the polishing brigade, the time has come to start preparing your “lovely” for the show ring. Please remember that our State is conducting the annual National Meeting in the NW of the State. I, as a frequent Nat meet attendee, would love to bring home 1 of the major trophies but it needs your help. The pick of the bunch is the Wratten Trophy. For too long, it has been held by either the Victorians or the Queenslanders. A team effort with many Tasmanian competition entrants should enable us to bring it to the State for the 1 st time in many years. “till next time “B” aware of ZEDS A Bloke was standing in a long line waiting to get his photo taken for his new drivers licence. The line inched along for almost an hour until he finally got to have his picture taken. But he wasn’t happy with the result and complained to the clerk doing his paperwork. “I was standing in line so long, I look as mad as hell” “Don’t worry” the clerk said. “That’s how you’re going to look when the cops pull you over anyway”? MG Car Club of Tasmania – MG Monthly Motoring News, September 2017 Exhaust Notes Breakthrough in Navigation Have any of the following scenarios happened to you? You have fruitless conversations with your satnav device. Your device has sent you on major roads when you want to take the scenic coastal route. Or the mountain road. Or a combination of both. You want the fastest route to your destination expecting to take the main highway - but find yourself on a forestry road. You program a via point only to find your device feels that identifying the exit sign to that town from the highway is good enough, or it tells you there is no possible route. You deviate from the prescribed route and suffer the endless instruction:- “Do a U-turn when possible” You need to look for a post office or community centre to determine which town you are passing through. You are wondering if there are any interesting landmarks nearby, since you see your location as merely a blip on the screen. You are wondering where the heck you really are (other than so many km from your destination). You need to leave your motel room and go sit in your car to plan the next day’s journey. You arrive at your destination and can’t answer the question “which way did you come?” Well, GOOD NEWS!! There is now a simple solution to these issues! The latest Multiple Area Projection system solves all these problems and lets you regain control of your journey. This system gives you large format details wherever you are. You can easily verify your location as you travel by checking roadside landmarks shown in the system, and readily identify alternative routes to your destination. It names all towns, showing the distance between them; shows all major and minor roads including distances between road junctions; identifies mountains, national parks, rivers to easily plan lunch stops, etc. It is popularly available in multiple location formats so you can easily scroll from page to page to access all the details for other areas, simplifying trip planning. It can easily be removed from the car so you can plan your trip from your motel room, or even the rest of the day’s journey from a picnic table. There is no issue with a delayed GPS signal or overheating batteries because this system can be located anywhere within the car. In fact it is operable in any location. For a more relaxed and flexible journey, this Multiple Area Projection system is available at any good bookstore or specialty Multiple Area Projection store. If you are more interested in information on a global level, but without the specific local detail, try the All Territory Large Area System. I’ve recently tested both of these systems and they work well. Kevin McGuire Page 20

MG Car Club of Tasmania – MG Monthly Motoring News, September 2017 SQUARE RIGGER NOTES All Pre War, T and Y Type MG’s. Square Riggers, T Types, Pre 56 MGs, call them what you will, our purpose is to encourage these types of vehicles out on the road, their natural habitat, covering the miles for which they were intended. And of course owners, drivers, passengers, occupants all, cause the occasional stop to meet, mingle and refuel usually by one of those barista type attendants. So typically, classic shots from the archives depicting such outings, Baskerville, Ross and The Sidling heading to Scottsdale. The other side of the T Type group, these loose unidentified shots from the Club T Register, virtually new TCs from 1950 and 1951. Who are the folk, places and source of pics, can anyone enlighten? The next Square Rigger gathering will be in support of the Baskerville Historics fast approaching later this month. Assemble from 9.00 am Sunday 24th September for a line-up along the ‘hill’.
