Salisbury United Church “There is now no Jew or Greek, “Connecting hearts, minds and lives slave or free, male or female, in community with God” for all are one in Christ Jesus.” August 15, 2018 ENEWS “SOMETHING TO PONDER” FROM REV. BRITT "Tell me the stories of Jesus." These are words from a classic children's hymn in our Voices United hymnbook. But who is Jesus and how can we know him all over again, perhaps even as if it were for the first time? For the fall of 2018 and on into winter 2019, we will be re-telling the story of Jesus' life. "Don't we do that each Sunday," you might ask. "Well," I might answer, "that depends on the cycle of Bible readings we follow each year”. Typically, that cycle begins in the fall with a series of readings from the Old Testament, also called the First Testament or Hebrew Scriptures (Testament means "Covenant"). We eventually get into the life of Jesus at Christmas and on into the New Year. This year we are spending the whole year hearing and proclaiming the stories of Jesus. It will be a year spent primarily with the New Testament, also called the Second Testament, or Christian Scriptures( also meaning, you guessed it, New Covenant). Trying to decide how to tell the story of any life is a challenge. Where does one begin? Does one begin at the end? In the middle? At the birth? Or before the birth? Well depending on which Gospel you read from the Bible, Matthew, Mark, Luke or John, the story begins in slightly different places. So we will take the earliest place from which to tell the story, the Gospel of John, and we shall begin there. Join us for our first fall worship on September 9, as we start with the words "In the beginning was the Word. ..." And oh yes, since September is the worship season of Creation, Tim Goos, a congregation member and meteorologist, will be providing us with "minutes about climate science" throughout the month in place of our usual "Minute for Mission". See you all in the fall, or better yet, next Sunday. BIRTHDAY CAKE & WELCOME BACK CELEBRATION SEPTEMBER 16TH Join us after church for our celebration of your birthdays! You will be seated with folks who have the same birthday month as yourself, while you graze on birthday cakes. This is a Good chance to meet new people and get caught up with each other after the summer. 1|Page

RICHARD BOTT, 43RD MODERATOR The United Church of Canada has elected the Rev. Richard Bott, 49, from Vancouver as its 43rd Moderator from a field of 10 nominees. Meeting in Oshawa, ON, over 300 commissioners (delegates) from across the country have gathered this week to decide on a wide range of church business that includes the election of the Moderator, who will be the church’s spiritual leader for the next three years. 3|Page
The Rev. Bott recently served as the minister for Pacific Spirit United Church in Vancouver and was in the process of moving to a new congregation. But that changes now that he has been elected Moderator, which is a full-time position in the church. Born in Marathon, ON, the Rev. Bott has served churches in Ontario and British Columbia. He is well known for his skills as a leader, writer, and educator. An early adopter of social media, he manages a Facebook group of over 700 United Church ministers. Looking ahead to the next three years, the Rev. Bott says, “I am excited about the possibilities that are in front of the church and hopeful that we are going to live into them together.” Unlike leaders in other denominations, the Moderator does not set policy or doctrine. Those decisions are arrived at by committees of clergy and lay people in the church who bring them to one of the triennial General Council meetings, where they are voted on by people chosen from all regions of Canada and from Bermuda. The Moderator-elect was installed as the new Moderator on Friday, July 27, at the closing worship service of the meeting.
