@ashfordtownmx.com From the Editor Paul Gully Good afternoon everyone, and big welcome to all the players, supporters, and officials from Basingstoke Town. This is our first league meeting in the newly switched up Isthmian League, although we have welcomed them previously in preseason friendlies. After a much improved and stronger performance in Tuesday’s tough game at home to Chertsey, this will be another good test of our unsettled side. Basingstoke remain undefeated so far in the league after their first six games. So we will be hoping to push on again and fingers crossed we can start to play a much more consistent starting eleven. To say recent weeks have been a bit of a test on Luke and the squad is a bit of an understatement. And we know it may sound like excuses at times, but the amount of players unavailable has been just crazy. With a lot of new names on the teamsheet over the last couple of games, it certainly doesn’t help preparation. Everyone has been working tirelessly to get players in, others available, and make it all work. All these new faces have some of the fans suggesting that we adopt Strangers In The Night as the new song for the team to take the field to!! On the coaching side it was announced during the week that Dean Greenwood is stepping down as Assistant Manager. We wish Dean all the very best, and thank him for all his hard work and dedication during this season and last. He will definitely be missed around the ground. Back to today, we are looking forward to a great game with another step forward. Let’s all get behind the team - learn those names!! Come on you Tangerines!! PG The new blue away kit 6 #ASHBAS

@ashfordtownmx.com Today’s Opponents Basingstoke Town Club History The club was established in 1896 by a merger of Aldworth United and Basingstoke Albion. They joined the Hampshire League in 1901, and when the league was split into geographical divisions in 1903, were placed in the North Division. They finished bottom of the division in both 1903–04 and 1904–05, and again in 1906– 07 and 1907–08. However, after consecutive second-bottom finishes and then finishing fifth out of seven clubs in 1910–11, they were North Division champions in 1911–12. Finishing as champions resulted in promotion to the County Section, although the club continued to play in the North Division. They won the North Section again in 1919–20, After league reorganisation in 1929 Basingstoke were placed in Division One. They finished as runners-up in 1965–66 and 1966–67, before winning the league in 1967–68. After finishing as runners-up again in 1968–69, they won back-to-back titles in 1969–70 and 1970–71, remaining unbeaten in the latter season. After their third Hampshire League title, Basingstoke moved up to Division One South of the Southern League. Their first season in the Southern League saw them reach the first round of the FA Cup for the first time, eventually losing 5–1 to Northampton Town.[9] The club remained in Division One South until 1979, when league restructuring saw them placed in the Southern Division. They won the division in 1984–85, earning promotion to the Premier Division. Two seasons later they were transferred to the Premier Division of the Isthmian League. Although they were relegated to Division One at the end of the 1987–88 season, they made an immediate return to the Premier Division after ending the following season as runners-up. The 1989–90 season saw the club reach the first round of the FA Cup again. After beating Bromsgrove Rovers 3–0, they lost 3–2 to Torquay United in the second round. In 1993–94 they were relegated to Division One, returning to the Premier Division after finishing as Division One runners-up in 1996–97. The following season saw them reach the first round of the FA Cup and defeat Football League opposition for the first time, beating Wycombe Wanderers 5–4 on penalties after a 2–2 draw in a replay; the attendance of 5,085 was a new record for the club. They then took Northampton to a replay in the second round, before losing 4–3 on penalties. They reached the first round again in 1998–99, losing 2–1 to AFC Bournemouth. In 2003–04 the club finished fourteenth in the Premier Division, entering a play-off against Lewes for a place in the new Conference South. Although they lost 4–1, they gained a place in the new league after Hendon decided against promotion. The club made another appearance in the FA Cup first round in 2006–07, beating League One club Chesterfield 1–0 at Saltergate before losing 3–1 to local rivals Aldershot in a second round replay. A fifth-place finish in 2011–12 saw the club qualify for the promotion play-offs. However, they lost the two-legged semi-final to Dartford 3–1 on aggregate, losing 1–0 at home and 2–1 away. They also reached the FA Cup first round again, losing 1–0 to Brentford. They qualified for the play- offs for a second time in 2014–15 after finishing third, but were beaten 2–1 on aggregate by Whitehawk in the semi-finals. The following season saw Basingstoke make another appearance in the FA Cup first round, a 1–0 defeat at Cambridge United; however, after finishing bottom of the renamed National League South, they were relegated to the Premier Division of the Southern League. The club were placed in the Premier South division at the end of the 2017–18 season as part of the restructuring of the non-League pyramid. They went on to finish third-from-bottom of the division in 2018–19 and were relegated to Division One South. At the end of the 2020–21 season the club were transferred to the South Central Division of the Isthmian League. 8 #ASHBAS

@ashfordtownmx.com THERE’S no greater buzz among Non-League supporters than experiencing the magic of the FA Cup. That thrill of seeing your hometown club pitched against the elite in the world’s greatest cup competition. There’s simply nothing like it. Sadly, though, the FA Cup gods can’t shine down on everyone and it takes a sprinkling of dust from Lady Luck herself at times in order to keep the dream alive. Take Horsham FC for example. After celebrating a famous win over Woking – two levels their superior – in the fourth qualifying round last Saturday, Hornets fans would be have forgiven for getting carried away while glued to the televised first-round draw on Sunday lunchtime. Their reward…a trip to Carlisle United – a round trip of 682 miles for a game which wouldn’t really over- excite the TV companies ready to potentially place them in the nation’s spotlight. Understandably, the Hornets would have looked on in awe at fellow Isthmian Leaguers AFC Sudbury, whose reward for becoming the first team to beat National League South leaders Dartford this season was a mouth-watering home clash against League Two neighbours Colchester United – a tie which will almost certainly whet the appetite of those either side of the Suffolk/Essex border. My message to Horsham, however, is fear not. The magic of the FA Cup has not passed you by just yet. As local sports editor, I remember covering Farnborough Town’s path to the fourth round of the cup back in 2002-03. After a handsome first-round victory over Harrogate, the town was filled with anticipation until they were handed a rather underwhelming trip to Southport in round two. Still, the run went on, however, as Boro came through 3-0 against the 10-man Sandgrounders to book their place in the third round for the first time in the club’s history. Premier League and Championship big guns lay in wait but Farnborough’s reward was a depressing 540-mile round trip to League Two Darlington in the snow! Talk about a damp squib! Incredibly, Graham Westley’s side came through that too, winning 3-2 in arctic conditions to make the hat for round four. Third time lucky, Premier League champions Arsenal were their just rewards and despite a 5-1 defeat to Arsene Wenger’s star-studded Gunners side in a tie eventually switched to Highbury, the club enjoyed their finest hour – a day that could never be taken away from a support base starved of success for so long. The same could also be said for Lincoln City. Non-League football’s best ever FA Cup run to the last eight in 2016-17 saw the National League Imps come through low-profile trips to Championship duo Ipswich Town and Brighton & Hove Albion to take their place in the fifth round. Again, the giants of English football lie in wait but Lincoln were instead paired with a trip to Burnley where their run was expected to end with a whimper and without the fanfare it thoroughly deserved. Not so, as Sean Raggett’s 89th-minute header earned Danny Cowley’s side the most famous win in their history and an eventual quarter-final clash with Arsenal at the Emirates. The rest, as they say, is history, as far as Lincoln are concerned. You see, Horsham may well be cursing their luck right now and wondering if the FA Cup gods will ever shine on their plush new Camping World Community Stadium in West Sussex. Hope, though, as Farnborough and Lincoln proved, is still on the horizon and but there’s still time for the magic of the cup to be conjured. As Del Boy would say in Only Fools and Horses…“He who dares, wins!” 24 #ASHBAS
