MALAWI CRICKET UNION (MCU) & THE CRICKET ACADEMY (TCA) INTRODUCTION, OPERATIONAL STRUCTURE & STRATEGIC PLAN MEMBER OF: POWERED BY:
Cricket in Malawi has come enormously far in the last 7 years. The objectives laid out in this strategic plan are hugely ambitious, but the passion, dedication, skill and experience of all of those associated with The Cricket Academy & Malawi Cricket Union whether players, coaches, volunteers, staff, commercial partners, funding partners, committees give us the belief to reach well beyond our current grasp. “OUR HUNGER IS FOR EXCELLENCE, BECAUSE WHEN YOU ATTAIN EXCELLENCE, SUCCESS NATURALLY FOLLOWS”. TEACH TO PLAY, TEACH TO COMPETE, TEACH TO WIN - Sets out our game plan to take on even greater challenges and to build a sustainable, exciting future for cricket in Malawi that will inspire all involved in the sport. We want our sport to grow in participation, succeed on the global stage, deliver economic impact, and be recognised for outstanding governance practice. This plan will require considerable investment in both financial resources and people to enable us to meet our objectives. We have no intention of being a drain on the game’s existing resources, the plan sets out to grow them. Simply put this plan sets out what The Cricket Academy & Malawi Cricket Union can deliver to the game if we achieve enhanced status. Our volunteer input has been one of our core strengths and the foundation upon which the game has flourished. Clear alignment between Malawi Cricket Union, The Cricket Academy, clubs and the regional bodies will be critical to ensure that this voluntary input continues to allow us to achieve the long-term aims for our game. The commitment and dedication of our volunteers will remain our greatest and most cherished asset. We thank all of those mentioned, especially our volunteers, who do so much, often unsung, towards creating the success that gives us all pride in our sport and country. We dedicate this plan to them, and commend it to all those that read it. Vivek Ganesan – TCA Founder & Executive Director & MCU President
HISTORY • In 1920 the Nyasaland Cricket Club (NCC) was established. Became the Cricket Club of Malawi (CCM) after independence in 1964. • Between 1964 and 1996 Malawi participated in a number of regional tournaments annually. The East & Central Africa Championship which Malawi won in 1992 and the Africa Zone six Championships. There were also numerous tour to the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in London and by the MCC to Malawi. • 2002 Malawi participated in the Africa Cup in which 10 nations took part. They came last in the group, losing all 4 matches. • Became an affiliate member of the International Cricket Council in 2003 and has since been known as the Malawi Cricket Union (MCU), the official governing body for cricket in Malawi. International debut came the following year in the African affiliates championship, where Malawi came fourth. • Malawi participated in the equivalent tournament in 2006, Division Three of the African region of the World Cricket League, once again coming fourth. • In Oct 2009 Malawi hosted the WCL Africa Div 3 tournament, beating all participants to win the tournament. • Malawi was promoted to WCL Africa Div 2 for the next tournament in Benoni, SA. However struggled at this level, finishing last in 2010 and 2011.
World Cricket League Africa Region Tournament History • 2006 (Division Three): 4th place • 2008 (Division Three): 5th place • 2009 (Division Three): 1st place • 2010 (Division Two): 6th place • 2011 (Division Two T20): 9th place Unfortunately the Malawi Cricket Union (MCU) was suspended from the ICC in 2011 for mismanagement and poor governance practices. The Cricket Academy (TCA) has been established (2010) to benefit, as practically and extensively as possible, the development of cricket in Malawi particularly in schools and low income areas of Malawi. Since 2010 TCA has been developing cricket in Malawi, we started off with one team of 11 players and one cricket kit. Today we have almost 100 schools in our development programs with over 3,500 boys, girls, men & women participating. In 2011 TCA got involved with North Star Alliance an N.G.O. That runs HIV/Aids awareness clinics and Mary’s Meals an N.G.O. That run school feeding programs all over Malawi. Most of our cricket programs are run at schools that Mary’s Meals provide their feeding program.
In 2012 TCA officially registered as “The Cricket Academy Limited” (Limited by Guarantee). In November 2013 volunteers from The Cricket Academy were elected to the executive board of the Malawi Cricket Union (MCU) the official governing body for cricket in Malawi. In February 2014 the Malawi Cricket Union (MCU) executive board agreed to make The Cricket Academy (TCA) responsible for all development, administration, training of player & support personal for cricket in Malawi. By June 2014 MCU was fully reinstated as an Affiliate member of the ICC and this was mainly due to the structures TCA had put in place between 2010 & 2014.
In May 2015 after almost a 5 year absence from international cricket the Malawi National Men’s Cricket Team traveled to Mozambique to play in a triangular cricket tournament verses Zambia & Mozambique. For the first time in history the team was made up of home grown players most of whom have come through TCA development programs. Malawi finished 2nd In 2016 for the first time in Malawi’s history an under 19 women’s team represented Malawi at an 8 Nation tournament in Botswana, a female team has never represented Malawi at cricket before. Malawi finished 5th

Over the last 8 years we have organized 42 tournaments, 10 outreach programs to the lake shore areas, central & northern regions of Malawi, 32 team senior men’s national league & championship, 3 junior international tours to Zambia, Zimbabwe & Botswana, an official Guinness World Record Attempt for the longest individual net session, one senior men’s tour to Mozambique & 4 ICC/CA certified coaching & umpiring courses. Cricket in Malawi has the potential to be much better, our ambition is to compete against the top teams in Africa and the world and play in World Cup Qualifiers and possibly one day World Cups itself. To give us the best chance of achieving this our foundation has to be strong, a lot of hard work needs to be put in behind the scenes. Cricket like all sports has its own unique culture. The best way to teach Cricket Etiquitte is to lead by example.
We are not just teaching Cricket we are teaching life, people, and leadership skill, as well as team work, responsibility & discipline. Traits that one requires to be successful not just at Cricket but in today’s fast moving world. TCA & MCU programs have evolved over the last 7 years, we started off to develop Cricket in Malawi and today we are an Education program that uses Cricket as the means.
