2014 Area and State Basketball Skills and Basketball Team Registration Information When See calendar below on page 5 for Area Basketball Skills Competition Dates. Conference basketball dates for 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 will be posted on the Mid-Winter Tournament page of the Special Olympics Iowa website as soon as they are determined and will be based in part on location and number of registered teams. The State Competition for Basketball Skills and Basketball Team will be held on Saturday, March 14 as part of the Mid-Winter Tournament. Where Area Basketball Skills – see calendar on page 5 below. Conference Basketball Team competitions – locations to be determined. State Basketball Skills - Iowa City West High School (new for 2015!) Please do not fax your registrations and please do not submit multiple copies of your registration forms. If you are submitting a new roster (prior to September 12), please indicate that it is a new roster and that it should replace the one previously submitted. Area Basketball Skills Registrations – please submit these forms to the individual listed on the calendar below. What Needs to be Area Basketball Skills – Area Basketball Skills Roster on page 6 and Coach/Volunteer Submitted for Roster on page 8. Registration Conference Basketball Tournaments – (3 on 3 and 5 on 5 teams) – Basketball Team Entry Form on page 7 and Coach/Volunteer Roster on page 8. Additional Area This registration packet is for use in registering athletes for the 2015 Special Basketball Skills and Olympics Iowa Area Basketball Skills and teams for the Conference Basketball Conference Basketball Tournaments. The Area Basketball Skills Roster in this packet replaces the one Tournament previously on the SO Iowa website. It contains the same information so check with Information your Area Director to see if they want you to submit a new form if you previously submitted the old form. Additional information and registration materials will be provided for the Mid- Winter Tournament including new team roster forms and coach/volunteer rosters for completion by those delegations with athletes advancing in Basketball Skills, 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 Team competitions. Team Basketball Age Groups – Senior (22 & over) and Junior (21 & under) Any team with even one male on it is considered a male team. The age group of a team is determined by the oldest player on the team. If a team has 9 players in the 16-21 year old age range and one 25 year old player they are considered a Senior team. 2
Levels of Play for Conference Basketball Tournaments: 3 on 3 Developmental – Players who are just learning the game. 3 on 3 Competitive – Athletes who can play the game, but don’t have enough players for a 5 on 5 team. 5 on 5 Adult Division I Male – Games played at 9th/10th grade level. Physical games. 5 on 5 Adult Division II Male – Games played at 6th/7th grade level. Officials sometimes do a little coaching. 5 on 5 Junior Division I Male – Similar to Adult Division II Male. 5 on 5 Female Adult and Junior – Similar to Adult Division II Male, but less physical. Alternates New this year – delegations may register up to 2 alternates for 3 on 3 teams and 4 alternates for 5 on 5 teams. Individuals may only be listed on one basketball team roster (as either an active athlete or an alternate). In order to be eligible to participate at a Conference Basketball Tournament the alternate must be activated by 5:00pm the third day prior to the competition (for instance if competition is on a Saturday the alternate must be activated by the preceding Wednesday). Alternates must meet the athlete eligibility requirements outlined below in order to be registered. Alternates will not be allowed to compete at the State Basketball Tournament unless they were activated for and played at the Conference Basketball Tournament with their team. Athlete Eligibility In order to be eligible for registration for competition in the 2015 Area Basketball Skills, Conference Basketball Tournaments and Mid-Winter Tournament an athlete’s physical/release form must be valid through March 15, 2015. Physical/release forms for new athletes or for those athletes whose current forms expire prior to the date of their Area Basketball Skills Competition or Conference Basketball Tournament must be completed and received in the Special Olympics Iowa State Office no later than two weeks prior to the registration deadline for that tournament. Please work with your Area Director, who will work with the State Office staff, if you are unable to have forms submitted to the State Office two weeks prior to the tournament registration deadline. It is imperative that these forms be submitted as far in advance of the registration deadlines as possible to allow time for them to be properly reviewed for completion and processed or returned for completion. Athletes should not be practicing without a current physical/release form on file with the state office. It is the responsibility of the delegation (Program Manager) to know the expiration dates of their athlete’s physical/release forms and to ensure that new forms are submitted in time to ensure eligibility for any SO Iowa competition. Athletes who qualify to advance to the Mid-Winter Tournament and whose physical/release forms expire on a date between the Area Basketball Skills and Conference Basketball Tournaments and the Mid-Winter Tournament will need to submit new forms to the State Office no later than Friday, February 20, 2015. We will not advance to the Mid-Winter Tournament any athlete who does not have a current physical/release form on file valid through at least March 15, 2015 or for whom we do not receive a new physical/release form prior to Friday, February 20. Class A Volunteer In order to bring athletes to Special Olympics Iowa competitions delegations must Registration and register at least one individual with a Special Olympics Iowa Class A credential for Screening Policy every 4 athletes registered. Special Olympics Iowa will allow a delegation to register Requirements 1 Class A Volunteer for every 3 athletes. Please use the Area and State Basketball Coach/Volunteer Roster on page 8 of this packet to register your Class A credentialed coaches, chaperones, staff, volunteers and 1:1’s. If you do not know the name of the staff attending from a particular facility at the deadline for registration, you may put "staff" and the facility name on the registration form. However you will be required to provide the name of the staff person at least 7 days prior to the start of the competition so we can verify that they have a current Class A credential. Individuals who MUST have a SO Iowa Class A Credential to attend competitions are anyone who: - has regular, close physical contact with athletes - is in a position of authority or supervision with athletes - is in a position of trust of athletes - handles substantial amounts of cash or other assets of SO Iowa - is a Unified Sports Partner Individuals who meet the definition of a Class A Volunteer above must complete the following Registration and Screening process every three years in order to be eligible to attend Special Olympics Iowa competitions as a registered member of the delegation. The registration and screening process consists of: - Completing and submitting a Class A volunteer application - Completing the Protective Behaviors training - Submitting a color photo - A background check will be run on every individual submitting a Class A Volunteer Application We realize that staff of many schools and other facilities that support, train, and travel with our athletes undergo background checks and screenings for their employment. Special Olympics Iowa cannot accept proof of these screenings or background checks in place of our Class A Volunteer Screening process. Special Olympics Iowa is committed to providing a safe environment for everyone who attends any of our competitions and events and will follow the above screening process for all Class A Volunteers as directed by Special Olympics Inc. Special Olympics Basketball Team Skill Assessment for Individuals A. Ball Handling (one choice – should be the most representative of the athlete’s skill level) Has difficulty dribbling and catching (2) Possesses some ball handling skills, but they are very limited (3) Can handle ball with dominant hand only (4) Can handle ball with both hands (5) Has ability to go either direction on the dribble (6) Has ability to beat defender regularly with dominant hand (7) Has ability to be defender regularly with either hand (8) B.
