What’s Coming This Season DRAÍOCHT – VISUAL ARTS & ARTIST RESIDENCIES Opened in March by Fingal Artist Una Sealy, and exhibiting until 18 May, is ‘MAKing Art: PAINTing’ featuring work by Susan Connolly, Bridget Flannery, Geraldine O’Neill & Liz Rackard in our Ground Floor Gallery and Paintings from the Collection of The Arts Council in our First Floor Gallery (pg 41). Draíocht continues its INCUBATE Studio Residency programme, including this GERALDINE O’NEILL PAGE 41 season: Anna Hryniewicz whose paintings excavate the theme of childhood; and Draíocht’s Artist Team, whose practice is focused on children and young people. Artists Anna Hryniewicz and Ashling Smith will have their work included in PLATFORM 2019, an exhibition and series of associated performance events showcasing the work of emerging and early career artists using the Gallery as a playful, experimental and creative space (pg 42 & 43). Michael McLoughlin continues his work in Mulhuddart as Draíocht’s Artist in Residence 2017-2019 (pg 46). Draíocht’s two gallery spaces are free to visit and open Monday to Saturday 10am-6pm. DRAÍOCHT - CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE PLATFORM 2019 PAGE 42 & 43 We are excited to work with artists from ‘Make Create Innovate’ during our Easter Holiday Workshops for ages 5-15 years (pg 30). Try your hand at Salt Painting and Life Drawing at one of our Free Family Days this Season for ages 5-10 years (pg 31). Early years babies from 2-4 years can enjoy Painting, Sound or Baby Boogie (pg 29). We have a sensory friendly screening of ‘Ralph Breaks the Internet’ (pg 34) and a Primary School Screening of Shrek (pg 36). Learn to Play Music Day is back (pg 33) with Mini Music Classes for babies and instrumental classes to up age 8+. Draíocht’s 5th Toddler Takeover event takes place from 29-30 May for ages 0-6 years (pg 32) including a Sensory Friendly day. Primary school pupils can try their hand at Still Life Painting under the guidance of artist Geraldine O’Neill (pg 36) and for secondary students we SENSORY SCREENING PAGE 34 have a Revision Day ‘Meeting The Artists, Exploring The Art’ (pg 37). Summer Projects take place in July (pg 38) and our inaugural ‘Draíocht Youth Arts Festival’ over the Summer months celebrates the creativity of young people aged 13-23 years. DRAÍOCHT - PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME What better way to start the New Season but with laughter? Comedians Danny O’Brien, Jason Byrne and David O’Doherty are sure to make you laugh your socks off with their new shows. The Illegals with Niamh Kavanagh are back (pg 19) as are The Classic Beatles (pg 21). First time to Draíocht is ‘Beyond the Horizon’, Ireland’s new Pink Floyd Tribute show (pg 13) promising an THE TODDLER TAKEOVER PAGE 32 impressive laser light show. Draíocht hosts the Irish Youth Dance Festival 2019 for the first time, with a programme of performances and masterclasses in June (pgs 26-27). Our theatre programme kicks off in April with ‘Vincent – a play by Leonard Nimoy’ (pg 8) and ‘A Day in May’ by Colin Murphy (pg 11) based on Charlie Bird’s book of the same title. Colin Murphy’s ‘Haughey | Gregory’ also shows for one night (pg 15). Movies this season include ‘The Favourite’ (pg 12) and ‘A Star is Born’ (pg 16), as well as a Free movie Screening for Bealtaine (pg 20), all on our impressive 4K equipment. Create Dance Project Youth Arts Collaborations APR-JUN 2019 Create Dance, now in its 8th year, is a core part of Draíocht’s programming; a fun, innovative dance project, where the dancers love to dance and move and also have an intellectual disability. Dancers and facilitators, Mark Rogers and Antje O’Toole, work together with participants and their parents to explore all types of dance and free movement, ending each workshop with the all-important solo dance. During the next two terms, our dancers will begin to work on these solo pieces to showcase alongside other dancers as part of the Irish Youth Dance Festivals Dancers Day (see pg 27). Summer Projects Draíocht Youth Arts Festival Bookings: 01-8852622 Summer Song School MON 01- FRI 05 JUL 10AM-4PM THU 04 JUL 10AM-8PM Free Concert For Family & Friends on THU 04 JUL at 7PM AGE: 13-17 YEARS €45 The ever popular SongSchool returns for what will undoubtedly be another sold out week of music based curiosity, collaboration and creativity. SongSchool is a week-long project that is ideal for those who are interested Draíocht Youth Arts Festival runs over the summer months and supports in writing and recording songs, performing a concert, making a video, high quality work for and by young people aged 13-23 years. Young people learning about music technology and meeting people who love music as much as they do … not to mention forming bands and having fun! are involved as performers, creators and audiences throughout, with the festival offering a range of shows, workshops and masterclasses. 24-30 JUN Art Explorers: Artistic Adventures The festival kicks off with a week-long Dance Residency with Dublin Youth Dance Company, followed by the Irish Youth Dance Festival 2019 (29 JUN), MON 08 - FRI 12 JUL taking place for the first time in Draíocht (see pgs 26 & 27). Both local WORKSHOP A: 4-8 YEARS 10AM-12PM €35 and international young people will showcase their talent, supported by an WORKSHOP B: 9-12 YEARS 1PM-3PM €35 ancillary programme of dance masterclasses and a young creators platform event. Artist Deirdre O’Reilly will introduce the children to a range of art materials and artistic experiences. ‘Artistic Adventures’ will be a creative journey for children to explore a wide range of techniques which will stimulate their 01-19 JUL imaginations to be inventive and harness their curiosity. Fingal Film School MON 15 – FRI 19 JUL 10AM-4PM Age: 13-17 Years €45 20 JUL Want to learn how to make your own films? Over these 5 days, facilitated Draíocht Youth Arts Festival also sees the creation of a brand new Dublin 15 by CreateSchool, you will collaborate with other creatives to plan, script, Youth Theatre show, taking place on Draíocht’s Main Stage. Developed by storyboard, film, edit and learn how to effectively add audio to produce Draíocht in collaboration with SongSchool and CreateSchool participants your own short films. Using mobile digital devices and a selection of apps, during their Summer Projects, this will be D15YT’s 4th major production. you will gain skills and tips that you can take home and master with your D15YT produce a bi annual theatre show and past shows include ‘Truth’ own projects. Artist Residencies Visual Arts Ceol Connected MAKing Art: PAINTing Theatre Company in Residence 2019 14 MAR - 18 MAY 2019 Ground & First Floor Galleries Paintings by Susan Connolly, Bridget Flannery, Geraldine O’Neill & Liz Rackard Ground Floor Gallery & Paintings from the Collection of The Arts Council First Floor Gallery Curated by Sharon Murphy Draíocht is delighted to announce that we will work with Ceol Connected as Theatre Company in Residence during 2019 and by doing so respond to our 2018-2022 Strategy ‘Space for the Arts’ and in particular our commitment to expand equality of access to more children. Ceol Connected is a young and impassioned theatre company that strives to create meaningful, beguiling, virtuosic, fantastical, and gloriously joyful work for young audiences that is of the highest quality and that draws inspiration and intrigue from the world of traditional arts. They are the makers of ‘The Quiet Tree’, The Far Field’, ’The Wonderful Tune’, ‘A Winter Wish’, ‘Whistle in the Wind’, and most recently ‘Return of Spring’. A core creative team comprised of Ceol Connected’s Dr. Thomas Johnston (traditional artist and theatre-maker), Orla Kelly (visual artist), and Joanna Williams (Director) are developing, with Draíocht’s support, a new inclusive and highly participatory theatrical performance, specifically MAKing Art: PAINTing is the second in a series of exhibitions (2018-2022) designed for young children with special educational needs.
