Congratulations Ashley & Patrick - we are so proud of you both! Thank you to the MSA staff, teachers, and coaches. Love, Mom & Dad 10
From Shawn Byron, Board Chairman I wanted to thank everyone for their support of Mount Snow Academy. Your commitment and hard work coupled with a stellar staff has made MSA the success we are today. The goal of MSA has always been to give our students an environment that allows them to explore the boundaries of their snow skills while carrying that commitment and dedication to snow sports over to their classrooms and community. All of this would not be possible without the dedication of the staff and coaches of MSA. They provide valuable inspiration and on-hill examples for the MSA student athletes and the rest of the competition programs. Over the past few years, I have had the pleasure of watching MSA truly raise the bar for ourselves and our student athletes. We had some very specific goals as we embarked on our expansion strategy in 2015 and have exceeded these goals on all fronts. Our steady growth, refreshed brand, and expanding Jumpstart programs have helped our visibility and allowed us to recruit more effectively. Our record enrollment this year would not have been realized had it not been for the investment we made with the Matterhorn property. With this expansion it is vital that we add expertise to our teaching and coaching staff. We have invited 10 new teachers and 3 new coaches to join our faculty and will continue to add to our staff as the program expands. Our coaches have also developed more robust full-year coaching and camp schedules, and we are anticipating only more interest in the program given the development initiatives at Mount Snow, and the families coming to the valley because of the Hermitage Club. We are now heading into a new chapter of MSA. Over the past 40 years we have served more than 900 students who sought to develop their on-hill skills while maintaining matriculation with their home schools. Their dedication and desire has produced Olympic athletes, collegiate racers, professional competitors and successful students who have excelled in finance, science, education and the arts. This year alone Mount Snow Academy has three alumni competing in the winter Olympics, which should make it clear to the world that attending MSA is a proven path to success. To continue this success, and to build out the school’s future, we will require support from all of you. Before I close I would like to extend a special thank you to the Mount Snow Academy Board of Directors. Membership on this board requires expertise in non-profit governance, personal contributions, and fundraising – often many hours of hard work during evenings, weekends and holidays. Your passion for our student athletes and your knowledge has been invaluable. Thank you again for your generosity as we embark on our new journey. In our evolving efforts, we hope to be able to make you proud and also serve and capture the hearts of new generations of this amazing school in the Deerfield Valley. Sincerely, Shawn Byron Board Chair 11

From the Head of School Dear Friends of Mount Snow Academy, Thank you for joining us to celebrate Mount Snow Academy tonight. As we know, our student athletes have each made the decision to pursue a passion in competitive winter sports. It is in recognition of their spirit and dedication that we are here tonight. There is also another group who has chosen to commit part of their life’s work to supporting our student athletes’ pursuits. Our teaching faculty and coaches come to work each day with the mindset that they are part of our student athletes’ future. This night is also about thanking and supporting the talented adults of Mount Snow Academy. Mount Snow Academy’s history in the Valley is long and successful. As we celebrate tonight, three former MSA athletes are in PyeongChang representing themselves and our country in an experience of a lifetime. Kelly, Devin and Caroline each benefited from the athletics, academics and culture of MSA while they were here, and now they are taking their talents to the world’s biggest stage. Please join me in wishing them each the best of luck as they “Go for the Gold!” In our second year at our new “Matterhorn Campus,” we continue to follow MSA tradition while continuing to seek new ways to provide a limitless athletic experience and a sophisticated academic model based on conversational education. Our recent growth to 45 student athletes is a testament to our exceptional school and growing reputation in the ski and snowboard world. And, I must also thank the Annual Benefit’s chairperson, Laura Byron. She, along with our countless volunteers, has organized a very special night for the Academy. As you enjoy this wonderful evening, please be assured that our school community appreciates the support each of you has given to Mount Snow Academy. Thank you, Todd Ormiston Head of School 13

About the Academy The Mount Snow Academy community enthusiastically instills in our students the vigor and self-esteem to take risks and the insight to build on their challenges as effectively as their successes. Each student athlete has a different set of challenges and strengths on the snow. Our personalized coaching programs enable each student athlete to identify the key areas of growth that are needed in order for them to reach their goals, and then provides a bespoke regimen of exercise & progression in order for them to reach those goals. The work they do here—goal setting, managing their time, taking advantage of their own strengths, and working to improve on personal challenges—usually results in a better relationship with themselves as students and athletes, and improved performance. This drive toward self-reliance is balanced with an environment that values and encourages active cooperation, care, and mutual support among students and staff. MSA teachers and coaches work together to help each student athlete find that delicate balance of a focused academic life and rigorous training and competition expectations. Our unique and individualized system of instruction challenges students to take ownership of their learning, as they are ultimately responsible for returning to their school and rejoining class without missing a step. This perspective shift often inspires our student athletes to become lifelong learners. Our faculty serve as expert guides into the course material. The conversational education model that we have developed fosters intellectual curiosity and academic rigour: there is no back row in an MSA class. And if extra help is needed, we easily accommodate with additional classes, an alternative approach, and/or supplemental materials. The preparation that a student athlete receives here significantly impacts their ability to successfully navigate the challenges and risks that they encounter in life after MSA. They learn self-discipline and time management, understand goal setting and goal achievement, and grasp the fine line between self-reliance and cooperation. They are college-ready and prepared for life. 17
About the Faculty Passionate Intellectuals & Caring Educators We bring experience, wisdom, and an incredible depth of knowledge to the table. This faculty is driven by passion for their subjects and strives to inspire the same passion in our students, thereby increasing their curiosity about the world. With hundreds of years of collective experience among us, we have diverse backgrounds and interests. Three quarters of us hold one (or more) advanced degrees, and many of us have enjoyed full careers as educators before joining Mount Snow Academy. We are flexible and consistently meet the challenges of teaching several different curriculums at once, while supplementing with our own resources. Within the structure of the schedule, we thoughtfully create rigorous and personalized lessons, and engage our students in conversation meant to explore topics in depth while simultaneously assessing understanding. Our model of conversational education develops self-confidence, intellectual curiosity, and self- advocacy skills which prepares our students to be ready for college and life beyond. Our goal is to make the most of every hour for every student athlete. Our students have always re-entered their classroom at home well prepared. Often, they are able to maintain a higher grade and more acute awareness of the subject and their own abilities following their time at the Academy. The MSA student invariably has an academic experience that cannot be duplicated in a multi-student classroom, and we are proud to build and strengthen the intellectual scaffolding that supports our students’ academic success. 2/12/2018 Preferred Winter Activity Preferred Winter Activity 18 responses Publish analytics 17 responses Preferred Winter Activity Snowboarding 47.1% Skiing Apres Ski Sitting by the Fire/Woodstove with a book & mug/glass of beverage of choice Snowshoeing/Cross Country 11.8% Skiing/Skinning - earn the 35.3% view/earn your turns Eating too much (cheese?) 18 This content is neither created nor endorsed by Google. Student Life at MSA Fun - Focused - Full Picture this: it is still dark out, and your phone alarm is ringing. Then another one goes off. Your roommate is planning on getting up too. You pull on exercise clothes, and sleepily make your way to the gym. 10 minutes later and you are sweating, laughing, and fully awake, blood coursing through your body. You race your friends to the breakfast nook, where a steaming hot pile of eggs and bacon and pancakes await your grumbling tummy. Showers and perhaps some last minute test prep come next before a morning full of class. You didn’t know a 45 minute class could race by so quickly. Lunch is quick and delicious; sandwiches or leftovers from last night’s dinner. Then gear up and load up the vans to head to the hill for hours of on-snow training. You work on the goals you’ve set for yourself, seeing improvement each week. Then back inside for video review with your coaches and the whole team, where you can clearly see that technique that is giving you trouble. Your coach points out an alternative approach; something clicks in your head. You can’t wait to try it out tomorrow. On to dinner (so good!), then study hall, where you power through your homework so you can have some down time before bed. Lights out comes too soon, but your body is ready for a rest. As your eyes close, you exhale a sigh of gratitude - yes, this is your life and it is awesome! Boarding at MSA is both fun and challenging. Students are expected to act as contributing members of the community. The Director of Student Life works with students to create a safe, comfortable atmosphere where students feel cared for and at the same time learn self sufficiency in a group living environment. There are cookie nights, Thursday evening programming, chores, and strictly enforced study hall on school nights. After studying, the students often hang out in the Great Room or in the lower level where they can play ping pong or watch movies on a big screen. Lights out is at 10:30. The Great Room is the center of student life. Here a wood stove surrounded by sofas is watched over by the giant camel, Humphrey. This comfortable, rustic room is representative of the atmosphere at MSA: cozy yet active. Students, teachers and coaches are either hanging out or passing through on their way to meals, classes and training sessions. Once a week we clear out the furniture, sweep the floor, and roll out yoga mats for an hour of yogic stretching and decompression. Our athletic programs take full advantage of the new gym space, holding dryland training sessions almost daily and the residents frequently enjoy early morning workout sessions. Everyone enjoys the jib hill, whether they are perfecting tricks or just hanging out, watching the action. 26
Each Tuesday, we gather as a full school community (students, faculty, coaches and staff), to share gratitude (our Thank You box is always open), stories of success and disappointment on the competition course, general updates, and words of wisdom and inspiration for the week from our Head of School or other invited speaker. Our professional chefs, Brandon Ruble and Chris Fratkin of NOMAD Chefs Catering, create seasonally inspired, nutrient dense meals that are as delicious as they are beautiful, and designed to help the student athletes perform at their best. The whole school comes together on Mondays for lunch, and our residential students enjoy specially prepared dinners each evening. MSA emphasizes a comprehensive lifestyle conducive to personal, intellectual, and athletic growth. If you are up to the challenge of counting yourself among serious student athletes who love what they do— MSA could be your home too. About the Student Athletes Passionate. Dedicated. Confident. Successful. MSA student athletes are unique. They’ve dared to follow their passion and fully immerse themselves in the world of competitive winter sports. They are goal oriented, constantly striving to improve their time or perfect their rotation as they fly down slope, all the while engaging in rigorous academics with intellectually passionate instructors. They are confident, and become even more so over the course of the season at MSA, with staff continually providing opportunities for this vital skill to be honed. They are successful - setting, achieving, and often surpassing their personal athletic and academic goals season after season. Their success follows them off the hill, where many of our alumni have gone on to pursue careers in the Arts, Finance, Science/Technology/Engineering/Mathematics, and the snowsports industry - including 4 Olympians. 27
