What’s Coming This Season
DRAÍOCHT – VISUAL ARTS & ARTIST RESIDENCIES
Holdfast by Ann Ensor (pg 34-35) is Draíocht’s first formal exhibition
addressing climate change. Holdfast is accompanied by an interactive
PROJECT SPACE for families in Draíocht’s First Floor Gallery (pg 39), a public
engagement programme and an artist’s book and is curated by Sharon Murphy.
In March we launch MAKing Art: PRINTing, the third in a series of exhibitions
                                                                                                  HOLDFAST PAGE 34
aimed at children and young people, exploring and celebrating different art
processes (pg 36-37). Curated by Sharon Murphy, the Ground Floor Gallery
features artists Neil Dunne, Margot Galvin, Fiona Kelly and Aoife Scott. The
First Floor Gallery features Fingal artists from Graphic Studio Dublin. Martin
de Porres Wright is this season’s Artist in Residence. A Dublin 15 based artist,
he’s developing new works in installation, painting and sculpture in turf and turf
dust, as well as working with bog oak. Draíocht’s two gallery spaces are free to
visit and open Monday to Saturday 10am-6pm.

DRAÍOCHT - CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE
Book early for our sensory friendly screening this Season of ‘Monsters Inc’ (pg
                                                                                             MONSTERS INC PAGE 16

Lords of Strut with ‘ABSOLUTE LEGENDS’ (pg 17) and ‘I AM BABA’ (pg 30).
Our Early Years workshops for ages 2-4 years will explore clay, dance and music

make some Seaweed Sculptures and Sea Creatures in our two Free Family Days
for ages 5-10 yrs (pg 42). D15 Youth Theatre will work with Fingal Film Club
students to create a film addressing environmental themes (pg 44). Draíocht’s
Artist in Your Classroom Initiative continues for Primary Schools in D15 (pg 46-
47) and we’ll collaborate once again with the IFI by screening a foreign language
film in French for senior cycle students (pg 49). Primary schools can explore
Samba, Singing and Percussion in our Focus On Music Workshops (pg 48), MOON WOKE ME UP PAGE 10
while TY Students can look forward to Dance Workshops with Dublin Youth
Dance Company (pg 50).

DRAÍOCHT - PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME
Draíocht is delighted to be working with Mother Tongues Festival for the first
time in 2020 to present a range of workshops and performances in different
languages for all ages (pgs 18-21). After 3 fun-filled weeks of ‘Robin Hood’
by Coolmine Panto in January, you can also enjoy ‘Honk’ by St Mochtas NS,
‘A Feast of Coolmine Talent’ by Coolmine Community School and ‘An Evening
of Dance’ from Marian Lennon School of Ballet. Movies this Season span the
decades from 1952’s ‘Singin’ in the Rain’, to new 2019 releases ‘Extra Ordinary’
                                                                                              BAZ ASHMAWY PAGE 24

We’re excited to host ‘Foster & Allen’ and ‘The Celtic Tenors’ for the first time.
Enjoy stand-up comedy this season from Jason Byrne, Neil Delamere, Danny
O’Brien and Catherine Bohart. We welcome Baz Ashmawy to Draíocht with
‘Family Matters’ and social media star Tony Cantwell with ‘Pure GRÁ’. Theatre

Verdant Productions present ‘A Holy Show’, written by Janet Moran.

Draíocht, in collaboration with Fingal County Council Arts Office, is
delighted to announce Holdfast, a new commission from Ann Ensor for
the 12th edition of Amharc Fhine Gall. Holdfast is an immersive installation
which explores the aesthetic properties and the environmental significance
of kelp seaweed. Kelp, a natural material, has been around for millions of
years and is hugely important in reducing and sinking carbon from the
atmosphere to the sea floor bed. Kelp acts as a wave barrier and helps
prevent coastal erosion. It shelters and feeds hundreds of marine entities
in its holdfasts and fronds. Kelp is now under threat from excessive storm
damage, pollution and mechanical cutting. Comprising sculpture, drawing,
sound and text, Holdfast is influenced by new concepts on materiality and
addresses urgent and compelling environmental issues of our time.

Ann Ensor is a visual artist based in Dublin 15 whose practice explores a
world of agential mater of which the human is just a part. She explores Image: Ann Ensor

understanding the universe in this way. Ensor has recently completed a
residency at The Ballinglen Arts Foundation, North Mayo where her work

MAKing Art: PRINTing is the third in a series of exhibitions aimed at
children and young people, which explores a particular visual art discipline,
its materials, processes and varied manifestations. Printmaking is the
focus of this third exhibition. It celebrates different techniques, styles and
approaches to the use of print, to the act of printmaking and to the print as
a finished artwork.

It includes two exhibitions: New Impressions (Ground Floor Gallery)
explores how traditional printmaking techniques have been re-imagined and
re-worked and invites us to consider: what makes a print a print? Common
conceptions of printmaking are expanded, from two-dimensional to three- Image: Aoife Scott
dimensional, from mass-produced to unique, from paper to mixed and
digital media. The exhibition features artists whose work, though rooted
in or referencing print, expands the boundaries of that medium. New
Impressions includes artists Neil Dunne, Margot Galvin, Fiona Kelly and
Aoife Scott.
