LETTER FROM THE CAMPUS DIRECTOR Dear HCHS Alumnae/i, AlumNotes is published by the Hunter College High School Alumnae/i Association, Inc. Hunter College East, Happy New Year! As I write this note on a bitterly cold day in mid- Room 1313B, 695 Park Ave. New York, NY 10065. January, I am reflecting on the powerful cycle of renewal the new Email: info@hchsaa.com. year brings us, even as we approach the one-year anniversary of the AlumNotes was founded in 1973. pandemic’s appearance and its impact on our world and school. I President want to take a moment to acknowledge the loss of loved ones in Raymond Tsao ’84 our alumnae/i and extended community as we look, with hope, to the Vice President future that opens before us. Judith Daniel ’79 We are all connected through social media during this time of social Treasurer distancing. For me, social media often serves to show how Hunter Frederick Yee ’93 College High School touches our past, present, and future. This week, a Google news alert informed me of the passing of the Honorable Secretary Peggy Blumenthal ’63 Shirley SCHLANGER Abrahamson ’50. She left an inspiring legacy as the first female justice appointed to serve on the Wisconsin BOARD MEMBERS Vivian Altman ’77 Supreme Court. Having served 43 years, she is the State’s longest- Sheila Anderson ’80 serving justice on that court. She once said that “Hunter’s mark is Alexandra Friedman ’00 indelible, its influence undeniable.” Christine Jung ’01 Emma OWENS Kerins ’84 As the present news cycle unfolds, President Biden’s first cabinet Anna Kovner ’92 nominee (nominated on his first day in office) was HCHS alumna Myrna Manners ’74 Rosa BLITZER Oppenheim ’66 Avril Haines ’87 as the new Director of National Intelligence. She Esther Rose ’71 will be the first woman to hold this position. The alumnae/i network Gabe Rosenberg ’94 also shares that Joshua Geltzer ’01 has been selected as a Special David Stefanou ’87 Adam Stolz ’99 Assistant to President Biden and Special Advisor to the Secretary of Constance WILSON Williams ’89 Homeland Security on countering domestic violent extremism. The Communications Manager present is indeed in good hands! Managing Editor/Writer Looking to the future, I’m personally inspired by the birth Kinshasa Peterson announcement from one of my former students (Congratulations, Copy Editor Tara!) while professionally grateful for the profound generosity of the Lisa Coleman HCHS Alumnae/i Association. The generous grant recently pledged Graphic Design will support HCHS in meeting the massive needs generated by Jana Flynn COVID-19 as we return to in-person instruction and support the remote learning of students not yet able to return. This help to our Director of Development Caitlin Terry future alumni—the current students whose high school experiences have been rewritten by what author Zadie Smith so elegantly calls the Events, Grants, and Development Manager global humbling– is the very essence of how HCHSAA supports its Eniko Horvath alma mater. Even in the enforced distances, you see the future and Manager, Membership & you know its care is yours. On behalf of the current students and the Administration HCHS community, thank you. PROGRAMS ON DIVERSITY Supporting Diversity at Hunter The HCHSAA has sponsored a variety of initiatives in relation to diversity at the high school. Each year, the Alumnae/i Association reviews proposed programs and issues grants based on impact and need, including providing support towards the issues of diversity and inclusion. We have worked with multiple stakeholders at the high school including students, faculty members, and parents on issues related to diversity. To date, this has involved a multi-directional approach that has included recruitment of potential student applicants and providing academic supports, sponsorship of programs and conferences, and funding for internships. We anticipate broadening our ability to support the student body by consulting with educator experts in the field of diversity and high school admissions, and by recommending and sponsoring programs and activities specifically targeted to address diversity issues onsite at Hunter. Below is an overview of some of the diversity related grants we have funded. SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND ENRICHMENT Commemorating Black History Month internships were led by the chairs of the Diversity Subcommittees on Recruitment, In February 2021, the Alumnae/i Association Admissions Reform, and Retention. Giving In Tribute In this issue, we present three tributes from the friends and family of alumnae, two of whom included generous bequests to the HCHSAA. In each instance, their loved ones felt strongly that providing support to the high school would be an ideal way in which to honor their memory. The gifts will fund programs in the arts and sciences, and provide scholarships for those students who excel in English. The alumnae whose lives inspired these gifts had a lasting impact on their families, their peers, and their communities, with HCHS always close in mind. These tribute gifts will also allow these loyal alumnae an opportunity to touch and enrich future generations of Hunter students. 6 ALU M NOTE S
THE HARRIET MALINA WOLF ’37 EXCELLENCE IN ENGLISH LITERATURE PRIZE Harriet Malina Wolf’s younger sister, Marilyn, was influenced by many of Harriet’s actions, beginning with Harriet’s stack of books in their shared bedroom growing up. Harriet took Marilyn to the Met Opera and introduced her to the Museum of Modern Art, while also imparting her love of literature and voracious appetite for reading. When the public library and the school library did not offer enough for Harriet, she took her sister with her to a lending library at 167th Street near Jerome Avenue, where they borrowed even more Marilyn Malina (standing) and Harriet MALINA Wolf (sitting) current literature to read. During their last visit together in Ridgewood, NJ, Harriet was reading a copy of AlumNotes, and Marilyn knew that setting up a prize for excellence in English literature at Hunter was the perfect way for Harriet to be remembered. Marilyn describes, “I can’t think of a more appropriate place to leave a gift than something that speaks to the present as well as the past. Students today who excel in their studies and are readers like my sister should be recognized for excellence.” Throughout her lifetime of civic duty and dedication to literature, Harriet maintained close friendships with several fellow Hunter alumnae. Harriet was the Campaign Manager for the first female mayor of her hometown of Teaneck, NJ, and was the President of the League of Women Voters. She did the New York Times crossword puzzle in ink every day for 70 years, and her tombstone is engraved with the New York Times logo and the phrase “well-informed citizen.” Her son, John, recalls how Harriet discussed the great experience she had at Hunter and the rigorous education she was grateful to receive, which informed her civic-minded life. He believes in giving back and supporting today’s generation of Hunter students to give them an opportunity they might not otherwise have, and to encourage them to pay it forward when they have the opportunity and the means to do so. As education is more essential now than it was ever before, investing in Hunter is a top priority for the Malina Wolf family. WINTER 2021 7
Giving THE LAURA GLICK ENAV-FARHI ’69 MEMORIAL FUND At Laura Glick’s 50th Hunter Reunion in June of 2019, she delivered a moving speech as class speaker and brought to mind the power of a Hunter education for her fel- low classmates. When Laura passed away suddenly and much too soon in October of 2020, her oldest friend and fellow Hunter alumna, Judith Bass ’69, felt called to find a way to keep Laura’s memory alive in a way that would be meaningful to her. Therefore, she worked with HCHSAA to establish the Laura Glick '69 Memorial Fund to contribute funds to the Science Research Program at Hunter, which supports independent sci- ence research projects by students. Laura was an inventive person and loved science and math as a student. She moved to Israel after graduating from HCHS and later worked as a computer systems developer and analyst for a major bank there while raising five children. Supporting the next generation of bright minds in the fields of science and math felt like a fitting tribute to someone like Laura. Many of Laura’s important friendships—with classmates and teachers alike—were born at Hunter, which Judy describes as an extremely important part of Laura’s life. When Judy began encouraging fellow alums to give to Hunter in Laura’s memory, the positive response was an affirmation of the impact Laura had on her community. 8 ALU M NOTE S
THE ROSANNE WYLECZUK ’74 FUND FOR THE ARTS From editing the yearbook and taking prolific photos, to performing in plays, to membership in art museums and local theater groups, Rosanne Wyleczuk’s passion for the arts flourished during her time at Hunter. Therefore, it was only fitting for her husband, Rick Stern, to establish the Rosanne Wyleczuk Fund for the Arts after her passing. From the time Rosanne and Rick met during college, Rosanne cherished her close friendships with several fellow Hunter class of 1974 alumnae, and her gratitude for her experience there led to her continuous support of Hunter throughout her life. As Rosanne and Rick began estate planning, they considered the organizations which would benefit the most and see the most meaningful impact from their support. With Hunter already at the top of their philanthropic priorities, it was a natural choice to designate Hunter as the recipient of their generous bequest. A strong work ethic powered Rosanne through her studies at MIT, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Computer Science. When Computer Programming was no longer a satisfying career, she returned to school and earned an MBA at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. Throughout her subsequent 25-year career at Hewlett Packard, Rosanne was driven to excel, just as she was driven during her time at Hunter. Further, her wonderful ability to communicate saw her achieve great success both professionally and socially. The Rosanne Wyleczuk Fund for the Arts is designed to empower future generations of students to be more like Rosanne. WINTER 2021 9
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, Giving is central to everything that we do at the Hunter College High School Alumnae/i Association. Our budget allows us to provide significant funds to the High School via grants (see page 24 for a detailed summary of our grant support in 2020), to respond to emergency funding needs, to provide free programming and robust communications for our alumnae/i community, and more. And 100% of our budget is funded by donations. To honor this, and to show our appreciation for our community of supporters, this issue of AlumNotes is dedicated to philanthropy. Our Honor Roll of Giving recognizes all donors who supported us from July 1, 2019 through December 31, 2020 with a gift of $125 or more. We also recognize our Purple Society donors; those who have supported HCHSAA with a gift of $1,000 or more ($500 if this is your Milestone Reunion year or you are within five years of graduating). We are deeply grateful to every donor who has supported our work and mission to work towards the recruitment, development, and advancement of the gifted students and alumnae/i of Hunter College High School. I would also like to take this opportunity to share that in January 2021, Lisa Siegmann and Jessica Knoble-Gray from Hunter College High School and the Hunter College Foundation, respectively, approached HCHSAA with an urgent request for funding to support COVID- 19 expenses. In the 2020-2021 school year alone, HCHS has spent $2.2M to satisfy the requirements to safely operate the school while managing the necessary precautions due to the pandemic. CUNY budget cuts have made funding extremely difficult to obtain, and the school has suffered extraordinary hardship due to these expenses. The PTAs of Hunter’s Elementary and High Schools have each pledged $150,000 to help offset this ongoing and tremendous expense, and the HCHSAA Board of Directors has pledged to join them. HCHSAA has made a commitment to grant $250,000 to Hunter College High School to offset the tremendous expenses posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. This ambitious target is designed to provide as much support as possible to the students, faculty, and staff of HCHS as they navigate this unprecedented time. We hope that you will join us in supporting these efforts by visiting www.hchsaa.org/hunteritestrong and contributing to the HCHSAA COVID-19 Emergency Fund. Raymond Tsao ’84 10 ALU M NOTE S
Giving YOUR SUPPORT MAKES Everything Possible The Alumnae/i Association's Board and staff extend sincerest thanks to the many generous individuals who made gifts to the Alumnae/i Association. Our Purple Society recognizes donors at the $1,000 level and above. We are also pleased to recognize those donors whose support for current high school projects and initiatives was made through the Hunter College Foundation. These are indicated with a ±. The Honor Roll of Giving, which begins on page 14, acknowledges all donors who gave $125 or more. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our access to mail deliveries has been limited. We have done our best to include every gift received between July 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020, however, we have experienced a delay in receiving and processing gifts mailed at the end of 2020. Any gifts not acknowledged here will be acknowledged in our spring issue of AlumNotes. We apologize in advance for any errors or omissions. WINTER 2021 11
