An Esplanade Co-Commission
The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark
Beijing Li Liuyi Theatre Studio (China)

“Li Liuyi is Asia’s most influential stage artist in the new century.” —Japanese contemporary
theatre master Suzuki Tadashi

The world-famous tale of vengeance and loyalty, brought to exciting life through a modern,
Chinese adaptation by acclaimed director Li Liuyi, renowned for his ingenuity and brilliance in
reinterpreting classics with a contemporary flair.

Li’s thrilling production makes its overseas debut at Huayi, featuring a star-studded cast that
includes actor Hu Jun (Red Cliff), stage veteran Pu Cunxin and actress Lu Fang, as well as
costumes by award-winning Hong Kong art director and costume designer William Chang (In
the Mood for Love, The Grandmaster) and renowned stage and lighting designer Michael
Simon. This is a dynamic modern revival of Hamlet that is gripping from start to finish.

Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark, returns home for his father’s funeral to find his mother married
to his uncle. His father’s ghost appears and instructs Hamlet to avenge him. Hamlet struggles
with his doubts about whether he can trust the ghost and if killing his uncle is the appropriate
thing to do. Thus, begins Hamlet’s descent into melancholy, madness and death. Hamlet is a
work of time-defying political and psychological commentary that has remained poignant and
relevant even after four centuries.

Painted Skin – An Opera in Concert
Singapore Chinese Orchestra

Give it to me. Give all your heart to me.

An exciting fusion of Western operatic style and Peking Opera elements, Painted Skin – An
Opera in Concert is an ambitious adaptation of the classic Chinese short story from Strange
Tales from a Chinese Studio by Pu Songling. Presented as an opera in concert, a dramatic
narrative unfolds, revealing an inner world of greed, lust and hypocrisy concealed under the
glamorous veneers that humans wear.

A Chinese scholar chances upon a beautiful woman crying in the rain while on his way home.
He gives her an umbrella out of kindness, unaware that she is actually a demon in disguise,
wearing a mask made of human skin painted with beautiful features. Besotted with the scholar,
the demon charms him. A romantic relationship ensues but eventually results in tragedy.

A co-commission by Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, China Shanghai International Arts
Festival, the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, and produced by Major Performing Arts Group,
Painted Skin is an innovative and creative musical interpretation of a classic tale. The
production sees the acclaimed Singapore Chinese Orchestra collaborating with a creative
team comprising scriptwriter Wang Yuanfei, renowned composer Hao Weiya, pioneering
director Yi Liming, under the baton of maestro Tsung Yeh.

Coupled with live multimedia projections and contemporary theatrical elements, the story is
brought to life by a talented cast including mezzo-soprano Dong Fang, soprano Li Jing Jing
and Peking Opera actor Liu Zheng, accompanied by an ensemble of leading musicians from
Singapore Chinese Orchestra.

The hearts of humans,
Are they crimson, or are they black?

Dear John
M.O.V.E. Theatre (Taiwan)

“The piano instrument, the spatial installation, the body of the musician, and the body of the
dancer altogether created a brand new artistic circuit. This is not a simple piece of
interdisciplinary collaboration; this is a project that confronts all existing paradigms and
explores new horizons of art.”
– Lin Yu Pin, art critic, Taishin Arts Award

"When I was introduced to Oskar Fischinger, he began to talk with me about the spirit which
is inside each of the objects of this world. So, he told me, all we need to do to liberate that
spirit is to brush past the object, and to draw forth its sound…Many years since then, I never
stopped touching things, making them sound and resound, to discover what sounds they could
produce. Wherever I went, I always listened to objects."
– John Cage, 1968

Stop, listen, feel. Can the sounds around you be felt? Can the objects around you be heard?

Inspired by the philosophy of avant-garde American musician John Cage, Taiwan’s M.O.V.E.
Theatre presents Dear John, an innovative and interdisciplinary production involving dance,
lighting effects, technology, audience participation, as well as sound.

Dear John depicts a sound journey that begins with a “deconstructed piano” and fully reveals
the process of making sound. Redefining the interpretation of performing arts and the
physicality of sound, and challenging the power-relation between performers and audiences,
the exploratory Dear John was one of the five works that was awarded the 2014 Taishin Arts
Awards—the only award in Taiwan that acknowledges creative achievements in works of
visual, performing and inter-disciplinary arts.

With the performance venue turned into a playful sound lab, this performance piece weaves
sound, light and movement to create a unique ambient soundscape that encourages audience

members to explore the space, and even become soundmakers themselves, becoming an
indispensable and unpredictable part of the experience.

That Which Cannot Be Divided
A Dance Double Bill
Bulareyaung Pagarlava & Albert Tiong (Taiwan/Singapore)

Prime numbers—random, unpredictable and aimless. Or are they?

That Which Cannot Be Divided is an Esplanade commissioned dance presentation that
explores the mystery of prime numbers and their relation to life. Featuring two former members
of Taiwan’s distinguished Cloud Gate Dance Theatre—renowned choreographers
Bulareyaung Pagarlava from Taiwan and Albert Tiong from Singapore— the dance double-
bill showcases two diverse works full of boundless possibilities.

At first glance, the distribution of prime numbers may seem aimless and haphazard. However,
on closer look, the way prime numbers are distributed could be guided by patterns and
structured by theories. Is this a reflection of the world we live in? Amidst chaos, we constantly
seek clarity, show resilience, and pursue harmony and contentment. Similarly, in the language
of dance, one often finds resolution in chaos.

About Bulareyaung Pagarlava
Bulareyaung Pagarlava is from the Paiwan tribe of Eastern Taiwan. During the last two
decades, Bulareyaung has been invited on numerous occasions to choreograph and perform
for various contemporary dance companies both in Taiwan and internationally. However, his
increasing awareness of his Paiwani identity has led him towards a new path, focusing on his
own native heritage and working with talented young dancers to explore the complex notions
between voice and movements, creating unique expressions of indigenous contemporary
dance. Bulareyaung Dance Company was founded in August 2014.

About Albert Tiong
Albert Tiong is a well-known Singaporean choreographer and educator in contemporary
dance. He has created works and trained generations of dancers for Frontier Danceland,
Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, LASALLE College of the Arts and The People’s Association,
and founded the former Re:Dance Theatre. Currently a teacher with NUS Dance Synergy and
Singapore Raffles Music College Dance Faculty, he also conducts regular classes with T.H.E
Dance Company and T.H.E Second Company. As an independent dance artist, his works
have been presented in various countries.

Love Letters
The Nonsensemakers/ Nelson Chia and Mia Chee (Hong Kong/Singapore)

“…this is just me, me the way I write, the way I want to be to you…and you can tear me up
and throw me out, or keep me, and read me today, tomorrow, any time you want until you die.”

Could the love of your life be just a letter away? Can writing a lifetime’s worth of letters make
you fall in love with someone whom you always thought of as just a friend?

At age seven, Andrew penned his first letter to Melissa, telling her she looked like a lost
princess. She wrote back to tell him to stop writing to her, and he was entranced. For the next
50 years, through hurt and disappointments, triumphs and failures, wars and marriages (to
other people), they poured their hearts out to each other in their written exchanges, becoming
each other’s closest confidantes.

Presented in Singapore for the first time in Mandarin and Cantonese, experience romance the
old-fashioned way as Love Letters explores the love and loss shared between a pair of
childhood friends. Each heartrending performance features a different pair of actors—Hong
Kong theatre practitioners Rensen Chan and Jo Ngai (who last moved audiences at Huayi

2015 with Travel with Mum), as well as Nelson Chia and Mia Chee of Singapore’s Nine Years
Theatre.

Written in 1988 by American playwright A. R. Gurney, Love Letters was a finalist for the
Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and has since been restaged countless times and adapted into
Mandarin, Urdu and Russian.

FOUR FOUR EIGHT
Emergency Stairs (Singapore)

“Built to be lonely
to love the absent.
Find me
Free me
from this
corrosive doubt
futile despair
horror in repose.

I can fill my space
fill my time
but nothing can fill this void in my heart.”
– Sarah Kane, 4.48 Psychosis

How can one survive and love in a broken world? How do we get along with ourselves?

Inspired by British playwright Sarah Kane’s last work 4.48 Psychosis, Young Artist Award
recipient Liu Xiaoyi presents FOUR FOUR EIGHT, a brand-new work that leads you into a
world, a social construct, where every audience member becomes a participant in a space of
gathering and camaraderie; in a place of urban loneliness – the bar.

Taking place in an actual bar, the perceptions of individual audience members are challenged
the moment when one enters the performance environment. Taking in the sights and sounds,
each person becomes aware of the presence of self, others, the space, and various activities
in the venue. The experience is an individual realisation, and is up to you to create and dictate.

Singapore theatre company Emergency Stairs has earned a reputation for boundary-pushing
works that generate much discourse among its audiences. Following Offending the Audience
in 2017, and Einstein in the Carpark in 2018, FOUR FOUR EIGHT is the third instalment of
the company’s Post-Dramatic Series. With FOUR FOUR EIGHT, together with award-winning
artists lighting designer Lim Woan Wen and sound artist Darren Ng, Liu continues to explore
the possibilities of, and challenge the limitations of what constitutes a theatre space.

"Please open the curtains." She said.

This performance begins long before you step into the bar. Small, deliberate moments
will connect you with the artist and his inner world. Through emails and other
ephemeral social interactions, you will be drawn into the artist’s processes of
creation—the impulses, the loneliness, the struggles, and the triumphs... and we invite
you to be part of the creation process.

Please write to 448@emergencystairs.com with “I want to open the curtains” to get
connected, and do remember to attach an image of your ticket.

Beijing Opera Excerpt: Famous General Yang Zaixing
Singapore Chinese Arts Centre (SCAC)

20 Feb 2019, Wed, 7.15pm & 8.45pm

Adapted from changkao wusheng (a form of male martial role) opera Xiao Shang He, the
Beijing Opera excerpt Famous General Yang Zaixing is a technically demanding work that
requires perfection in singing, acting, recitation and acrobatics.

Highlighting the loyalty and righteousness of General Yang Zaixing, this work is set in the
Song dynasty. When the Jin military invades the Central Plains again, General Yue Fei
commands General Yang Zaixing to retaliate. General Yang braves the snow storm and rides
across a river to fight off the enemy troops but alas, the ice is not thick enough to hold him
and his horse and they fall into the icy river. The story ends with General Yang being shot to
death by enemy arrows.

This opera excerpt is primarily action-based and suitable for audiences of all ages to enjoy.

Singapore Chinese Arts Centre was started with the intention to provide a platform for
practitioners and aficionados of the various Chinese opera forms to interact, communicate,
innovate and provide mutual assistance. It seeks to be a cultural enterprise which enables
Singapore and the world Chinese community to come together through common interests and
ideology.

Reaching out to both individuals and organisations through performances, talks, exhibitions
and workshops, SCAC hopes to ignite the public’s interest and passion for Chinese Opera, so
as to pass down its essence and wisdom.

NUS Dance Blast! x NUS Chinese Dance
22 Feb 2019, Fri, 7.30pm, 8.45pm & 10.15pm

NUS Dance Blast! teams up with NUS Chinese Dance to present fresh new works that brings
together the seemingly contrasting worlds of the East and the West through a creative dance
narrative.

1. Homeward Bound
Freedom. Something every child longs for, to be free from the boundaries of their homes. But
as we grow older, the more we slowly come to realise that home is where the heart is.

2. Alike
Strength, beauty and elegance.

3. Yahhh
This piece is an attempt to convey the melding of cultural and linguistic boundaries between
the seemingly contrasting worlds of Western hip hop and Eastern Chinese elements through
movement, perhaps to also show how albeit being a secondary art form, dance can be
exercised as an all-encompassing medium to fuse and explore primary aspects of the arts
and culture itself.

4. The Magician
A piece that aspires to focus on the mystery and magic of life, humour and fun.

5. WEN
One of the wonderful aspects of dance is its ability to tell stories through movement. We use
movement to convey messages that cannot otherwise be articulated through words. On the
other hand, the beauty of Chinese songs lies with how each word can carry with it so much
meaning and how verses can be so vivid and picturesque in its description.

Through this performance, we hope to marry both the storytelling elements of dance and
Chinese songs in the most honest way we can.
