Robin’s Nest was a major success for ITV, running
for five years and six series. Spinning off from the
hit sitcom Man About The House, and created by the
classic comedy team of Johnnie Mortimer and Brian
Cooke, it charted the progress of erstwhile housemate
Robin Tripp and his flourishing (or otherwise) career
as a qualified chef running a little Fulham bistro –
    ‘Robin’s Nest’.
Starring Richard O’Sullivan as Robin and Tessa
Wyatt as his girlfriend (and later wife), Vicky, the
series found Robin pursuing his dream project of
opening his own bistro… for people who really appre-
ciate high prices. The dream is just about holding up
against the constant intervention of Vicky’s divorced
father, James Nicholls (Tony Britton) – a would-be
entrepreneur who also happens to own both the cou-
ple’s flat and the bistro – along with their disaster-
prone, one armed dishwasher Albert Riddle (David
Kelly), and the unexpected arrival of twins…
This set contains all six series of Robin’s Nest, originally transmitted between 1977
and 1981, as well as two Christmas specials, from 1979 and 1980.
    Running time approx 1200 mins.

ROBIN’S NEST IS COMING TO TALKING PICTURES TV
All 48 episodes from the six series will be shown, from
     1977 to 1981. Starring Richard O’Sullivan, Tessa
Wyatt and Tony Britton. Robin Tripp (Richard O’Sulli-
van) now lives with girlfriend Vicky Nicholls, in a flat
in Fulham above a bistro called Robins Nest. Vicky’s
father, James, (Tony Britton), disapproves of Robin and
is an over enthusiastic “sleeping partner” in the Bistro.
Extra laughs provided by Richard Kelly as the one-
     armed dishwasher, Albert.
Series begins: Monday 18th March at 17.30 and
     will air every weekday.

Full-cast adaptations of the Callan stories
originally published in the Sunday Express.
David Callan works for The Section, a top-secret counter-
espionage organisation. He’s a killer, a trained assassin, and
the best at what he does — but that doesn’t mean he has to like it!
File on a Deadly Shot
With Lonely posing as his gentleman’s gentleman, the section’s top operative David Cal-
lan is sent to a country estate in Northumberland to infiltrate a rich men’s shooting party.
One of his companions is an assassin but which one? High living and high stakes on the
grouse moors as Callan attempts to work out which of the dead-shots is a man-hunter.
File on a Classy Club
Callan finds the odds are stacked against him when he poses as a high roller at
London’s top casino. His mission is to lose all his money but he almost loses his life
when he stumbles into an East German spy cell. Perhaps a card sharp from Lonely’s
past can help Callan turn the tables.
File on an Awesome Amateur
Callan and Meres are despatched to a cultural festival in Venice to snatch a Russian
poet from under the noses of the KGB. But the success of the mission depends upon the
expertise of amateur sleuth and keen ornithologist Cynthia Widgery. Feathers fly on the
Grand Canal...
File on a Harassed Hunter
Callan is drawn into a dark secret when Hunter invites him to fly to Newcastle for a trip to
the theatre. The plot thickens when an alcoholic actor and a decoy called Prenderghast
lead Callan to one of the KGB’s most proficient killers. The setting for the denouement is
far too close for comfort.
Originally broadcast in 1967, Callan brought a much darker tone to the world of spy
drama. With James Bond’s career beginning in film in 1962, Michael Caine’s Harry
Palmer beginning in 1965 (The Ipcress File) and hot on the heels of the surreal series
The Prisoner in 1967, Callan was a much grittier character. With similar responsibilities to
MI5, he used the most ruthless and lethal techniques to get the job done.
Four series of the original television series were produced between 1967 and 1972, plus
a cinema film released in 1974 and a TV comeback in 1981. Adapted from series creator
James Mitchell’s Sunday Express Short Stories by his son Peter Mitchell, four new ad-
ventures expand the themes explored in the television show.
Cast: Ben Miles (Callan), Frank Skinner (Lonely), Nicholas Briggs (Hunter), Jane Slavin
(Liz), Nicholas Asbury (Lord Marsden), David Rintoul (Baumer), Justin Avoth (Endicott),
Glen McReady (Minns), Louis Tamone (Lorimer / Waiter), Tam Williams (Toby Meres),

Spotlight on John Gregson
Born 15th March 1919 Died 8th January 1975
We are so proud to have hosted John Gregson Day on Talking Pictures
TV and hope everyone enjoyed it.
John Gregson was born Harold Thomas Gregson on 15 March 1919
in Liverpool. He grew up in Wavertree where he was educated at Green-
bank Road Primary School and then St. Francis Xavier’s College. He left
education at 16. His first employment was for a telephone company -
the Liverpool Corporation - as the city council was then known, before
the Second World War started. It was during this time that he became
interested in amateur dramatics. His interest led him to join the local
Catholic Church theatre group at St. Anthony’s, Mossley Hill, and later the Liverpool Playgoers’ Club.
When war broke out, Gregson joined the Royal Navy as a sailor on minesweepers. He received a
knee injury when a mine field was hit and had to be rescued from the ocean. After being demobbed
in 1945, he joined the Playhouse in Liverpool for a year, before going on to Perth Theatre in Perth,
Scotland. Here he met his future wife, actress Ida Reddish from Nottingham, who at the time was
using the stage name Thea Kronberg and had recently arrived from the Birmingham Repertory
Theatre. By 1947 they moved to London and were married. Their union was blessed with six children,
three daughters and three sons.
He made his uncredited debut in films in London Belongs to Me (1948) and quickly followed it
with another uncredited performance in Saraband for Dead Lovers (1948) with Joan Greenwood and
Stewart Granger. His specialised screen personae tended to be men of integrity: regular guys who
don’t necessarily finish on top, introspective, somewhat diffident and often troubled.
Throughout the fifties and sixties he appeared in some notable roles and classic British films – both
“A” and “B” features including The Brave Don’t Cry (1952), The Holly and the Ivy (1952), Conflict of
Wings (1954), The Battle of the River Plate (1956), Sea of Sand (1958) and The Frightened City (1961).
He was also memorable in Tomorrow at Ten (1962) – the last film in which he would receive “leading
man” status. He was most widely respected with cinema-goers in the late fifties and early sixties and
named 9th most popular star by British Exhibitors in 1956, 4th in 1957 and 8th in 1958. He was also
chosen to appear on the popular BBC Radio series Desert Island Discs - a great honour given to only
the most respected of performers and artists - in 1955.
His television work included Gideon’s Way (1965-66), where he starred as Commander George
Gideon in the 26 episodes of the series and Shirley’s World (1971-72), with Shirley MacLaine. He is also
remembered in long running coffee adverts too, when he took over from Kenneth More! But he was
most remembered in his comedy roles – although he appeared in more dramatic films than comedy.
His most famous was Genevieve (1953), also starring Kenneth More, Dinah Sheridan and Kay Kendall.
More was described as his “rival” in British cinema at the time, although Gregson tended to appear in
fewer comedy films and more dramas. John also starred in the Ealing comedies Whisky Galore! (1949),
The Lavender Hill Mob (1951) and The Titfield Thunderbolt (1953).
Like most actors of the era, Gregson struggled from the mid-sixties to maintain the status he once
held with the public in a shifting film industry with changing tastes. He was not alone as Kenneth
More, Richard Todd and Michael Craig all experienced similar career hits at the box office.
In the seventies he worked mostly on television and in the theatre, where his name was still a
huge draw to audiences. He occasionally did voice-over work and adverts including a series of them
for Hamlet cigars. His popularity was such that John became the subject of Eamonn Andrews’s big
red book, when he was surprised on This Is Your Life in April 1973. John Gregson died suddenly from
a heart attack near Porlock Weir, Somerset, aged 55, whilst on holiday, as he walked to St. Beuno’s
Church, Culbone on 8 January 1975. He left a widow, Thea Gregory and six children. His final role was
in the Southern Television serial Dangerous Knowledge, which was broadcast posthumously in 1976.

                                                                                                            9

THE MONOCHROME YEARS
                               4-DVD BOX SET
Starring: Edward Woodward, Russell Hunter, Patrick Mower, Lisa Langdon
This set contains all twenty-one black & white episodes from the first two series,
plus the original Armchair Theatre pilot play, A Magnum for Schneider, along with all the
remaining black and white episodes from series one and two - unseen in nearly forty
years and unavailable in any format until now. The Worst Soldier I Ever Saw only exists
as an unedited recording block and has been re-edited into its proper transmission
     format for this release.
Edward Woodward gives an electrifying performance as a reluctant professional killer
working for British Intelligence. Callan became a national phenomenon in the late 1960s,
making Woodward one of the highest profile actors on television and paving the way to
his eventual career in America on shows like The Equalizer.
Created by James Mitchell (When the Boat Comes In) and exploring the dingy, twilight
world of the professional spy, Callan was the antithesis of James Bond and presented,
until that point, the most realistic portrayal of government espionage.

Spotlight on Albert Finney
       9th May 1936 – 7th February 2019
The announcement that the British act-
ing legend Albert Finney had “passed
away after a short illness” by his fam-
ily, came as a great shock to fans and
the film industry alike. The actor, who
was nominated five times during his
career, learned his craft on stage with
     the Royal Shakespeare Company
before achieving fame as a film actor.
Born in Salford on 9 May 1936,
Finney grew up the son of a book-
maker as part of what he called the “lower middle class”. Encouraged by his headmaster
at Salford Grammar school, he earned a place at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art
(RADA). He shared classes with Peter O’Toole and Alan Bates. After his graduation from
RADA and his RSC work, he continued working on the stage – even when his film success
took off – earning Tony nominations on Broadway for Luther and A Day in the Death of
     Joe Egg.
It is his film work for which he will forever be remembered, in particular his “angry
young man” role of Arthur Seaton in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960). This
was only his second cinema film – his first being The Entertainer (1960) – although he had
made a handful of television films before this. Following this he would go on to become
one of the most significant and versatile British actors of our time. (BAFTA awarded him
the Most Promising Newcomer Award 1960, for Saturday Night and Sunday Morning.)
Further cinematic roles that captured his audience include Tom Jones (1963), Charlie
Bubbles (1968), Scrooge (1970), Murder on the Orient Express (1974) as Hercule Poirot,
Gumshoe (1971) and Annie (1982). His performance in the film version of The Dresser
(1983) gave him the Silver Bear Film Award and nominations for Best Actor in both the
     BAFTA’s and the Oscars.
Throughout the 90s and into the new millennium, he continued to be in great demand
on stage, screen and television. BAFTA gave him the Best Actor award for his perfor-
mance of Winston Churchill in the television series, The Gathering Storm (2002). Notable
later film roles were seen in Erin Brockovich (2000) and Big Fish (2003). It was disclosed in
2011 that Finney had been treated and had “overcome” kidney cancer, before throwing
himself into filming The Bourne Legacy (2012) and the Bond film Skyfall (2012) - his final
     film credit.
Finney never forgot who he was or where he came from. A life-long fan of Manchester
United, he declined a CBE in 1980 and a knighthood in 2000. “I think the ‘Sir’ thing slight-
ly perpetuates one of our diseases in England, which is snobbery,” he said at the time. He
was also reluctant to discuss his craft. “My job is acting, and that is why I hate interviews
or lectures, explaining myself to an audience.” He will be sorely missed.

                     Career of Albert Finney
                     by Gabriel Hershman

Strolling Player is the story of a
                     Salford-born, homework-hating book-
ie’s son who broke the social barriers of
British film and dodged typecasting to
                     become a five-time Oscar nominee.
This riveting account of the life and career
of Albert Finney examines how one of
Britain’s greatest actors built a glittering
                     career without sacrificing his integrity.
It’s also the story of an actor who went
his own way, did his share of roistering
and yet outlived his contemporaries to
become one of our most durable
                     international stars.

                     A Man Called Harris
                     The Life of Richard Harris
By Michael Sheridan & Anthony Galvin
Richard Harris was a giant who oozed
charisma on screen. But off screen he was
troubled and addicted to every pleasure
life could offer. Coming from a repressed
Irish Catholic background, he was forced
by a teenage illness to abandon his belov-
ed rugby, but not his macho appetites.

Discovering theatre saved him. He had
found his calling. Despite marrying the
daughter of a peer, he never tried to fit in.
He was always a hell-raiser to the core,
                     along with legendary buddies Richard
HARDBACK BOOK Burton and Peter O’Toole. But he was
more; he was a gifted poet and singer. He
was an intelligent family man who took

 Carole Lombard
 Twentieth-Century Star
 By Michelle Morgan
Carole Lombard was the very opposite of
 the typical 1930s starlet. A no-nonsense
woman, she worked hard, took no prisoners
and had a great passion for life. As a result,
 she became Hollywood’s highest-paid star.
From the outside, Carole’s life was one of
great glamour and fun, yet privately she
endured much heartache. As a child, her
mother moved Carole and her brothers
across the country away from their beloved
father. Carole then began a film career, only
to have it cut short after a devastating car
accident. Picking herself back up, she was
rocked by the accidental shooting of her HARDBACK BOOK
lover; a failed marriage to actor William
Powell; and the sorrow of infertility during
her marriage to Hollywood’s King, BOOK OFFER

a catastrophic plane crash. In this book, with FREE UK
