Hillcrest Villagers APRIL 2021 Newsletter My fellow Villagers Club Website www.hillcrestvillagers.co.za The year marches on and at last it seems we have something to give us hope for Facebook the return of road running in KZN. Pinetown and Districts Athletics Club recently https://www.facebook.com/grou hosted the annual PDAC 25km, in April as opposed to its traditional January slot. ps/76475150101 There were certain regulations and a reduced field but it was nevertheless great Email to see another road race in KZN after more than a year since last years Deloitte secretary@hillcrestvillagers.co.za Challenge became the last road race before the impact of Covid-19 decimated Your Committee the racing calendar. Vice Chairman During April we were unfortunate to see Marc Allen step down as chairman of Warren Kidgell the club. Marc has led the club brilliantly over the past few years and his 074 805 2452 innovative ideas and approach have been at the forefront of managing the club through the difficult times over the past year. We as a club and committee are Secretary very grateful for the leadership he has provided for the club and we wish him well Julyette Lewis 082 468 4144 in his future running endeavours. Treasurer The club has many exciting events lined up for the membership over the coming Debbie Eglington months. With the potjie day being the highlight of April, we can look forward to 083 449 9766 Mav’s PB Chaser Mile event and another HVAC golf day in May. June sees the Ladies Captain 40th anniversary of the first Gunga Din win for Hillcrest Villagers and we will be Michelle Donne hosting a run to celebrate, whilst later in the month we will have our HVAC Trail 082 568 0191 Run at Honey Trails. Sandy Stewart 074 999 7009 A reminder that our AGM is set for the 24th of June. Hillcrest junior Joshua Steytler wins the U19 mens Outsurance/Torpedo swimathon in Paarl, Cape town, and finished 2nd overall chasing the Elite men. Multi-discipline event 1.2km's of swimming and 10km's of trail running Had such a jol doing my first superleague- swimathon. Very happy with taking my first win in the U19 mens category and 2nd overall. Tough race, eissh running with wet shoes was like carrying an extra 5kg on my legs and those trails were hectic, Was good fun chasing after Elite Triathlete Nick Quenet who came first, awesome race. Well done to all the athletes that raced today and to Torpedo and Outsurance for putting on an awesome event, my first time racing this type of format, will definitely be back Marc and Michelle meeting up with old friends in Cape Town – Peter and Silvia and Rob and Penny Tristan Sebire winning at Howick Trail Josh Steytler wins the U19 Junior Mens 2021 CTTA Duathlon champs held at Killarney Race Track today in Capetown 4
GUNGA DIN TROPHY On 31 May 2021 we will be celebrating 40 years since the first time Hillcrest Villagers won the team event at the Comrades Marathon on 31 May 1981. This prize is known as the Gunga Din Trophy and the team went on to win for three consecutive years (1981,1982 and 1983) a feat that has yet to be repeated. With our top runners Derek Tivers, Graeme Fraser, Tony Abbot, Roly Wood, Errol Ackerman and Ian Edwards all being part of the teams for those three years. With the best comrades time out of the three years going to Graeme Fraser of 5:41:55. The Gunga Din Trophy was initiated in 1931 and consists of a steel World War 1 helmet mounted on a shield which was donated by the Gunga Din Shellhole of Moths (Memorable Order of The Tin Hats). Gunga Din was not afraid to face danger on the battlefields as he tends to wounded men. He dies taking water to a wounded soldier during a battle. He was the embodiment of bravery and Camaraderie and as Rudyard Kipling says “You’re a better man than I am Gunga Din” 6

I would just like to thank Marc for his innovative, creative and motivated leadership. Some of his achievements during his tenure were to re write the Constitution, and get the Elite Runners Program off the ground. If Marc says he is going to do something he does it, there are no half measures. Down to earth and straight forward but at the same time bringing his own brand of wit and humour to the committee. I wish Marc all the best in his future running and I know his legacy will continue and be in safe hands with the new Chairman.
