LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT A little over 30 years ago, a handful of people envisioned a chorus for gay men and their supporters not only to make music but to make a community. That community provided a safe haven from a not so accepting world for members to be themselves as well as to nurture and support one another as they dealt with the HIV/AIDS epidemic. On December 19, 1991, approximately 60 men performed in front of an audience of mostly family and friends the premiere concert Tidings of Pride and Joy. Some of those same gentlemen who performed in that premiere ADDRESSING THE UNIQUE FINANCIAL NEEDS OF THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY. concert are still active today either as volunteers or singers and/or members of the Board of Directors. The CMC continues to nurture and support its members with virtual rehearsals and social events that keep us connected. At the same time, the CMC continues to serve the community by presenting virtual concerts as we once again deal with As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I have a deep another virus affecting not just our community but the world at large. understanding of the financial challenges we face — and of the The pearl is a symbol of longevity and is the traditional 30th anniversary solutions that can help meet those challenges. FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Who knew? Who knew that a year ago the whole world would be shut down? I didn’t. We were preparing to perform in a joint charity concert with Southern Gateway Chorus quickly followed by our Spring concert God Save the Queens, a salute to iconic songs and stars of the UK… when it all went bust. Poof. So here we are, just over a year later. CMC is still going. We are thriving and surviving thanks to you, our supporters. By the completion of this concert, we will have produced or been involved in fifteen virtual videos. That’s a lot of content! For this concert, we have culled three classic recordings from CMC’s Thirteenth season (13 going on 30? Anyone?), with new videos choreographed and produced by Darnell Pierre Benjamin (of Pones) and local theatre actor/director/choreographer David Radtke. We are lucky enough to have two video producers in our ranks: Bob Amott and Eric Knechtges, who helped make this transition to virtual productions much easier than it could have been. And what about the music? It’s the Great American Songbook! This is our heritage, the popular music that started here and influenced the world. And its influence continues to this day. I have read (Wikipedia, y’all) that the era of the Great American Songbook starts around 1920 and ends roughly around 1950-1960. Hogwash. That would leave out so much Broadway, Motown, and other pop songs that will continue indefinitely in Karaoke halls around the world. Sweet Caroline, anyone? My Girl? I Will Survive? Theme from New, York, New, York? Fancy? Push It? Let It Go… you get the idea. All that to say, grab a drink and a snack, relax in the best seat in your house, and enjoy String of Pearls. Steve Milloy Artistic Director, Cincinnati Men’s Chorus
