Completing it after the school year begins is very difficult for students. Please spread the word to others you know taking this course-- send it to them if you can! Hello and welcome to AP Biology! We hope you will be excited and motivated by this rigorous science course. The summer assignment is lengthy and is a reflection of the workload you can expect during the year. In addition to reading the textbook and taking notes during the school year, you will complete enrichment assignments based on the material and will carry out many labs. This assignment has 3 parts. Parts 1+2 will lead to work products due on the first day of class, and you will be quizzed on the second week of school. Part 3 leads to a creative work product that is due the third week of school. Significant points will be deducted from late assignments. Give each concept a name, then describe it i n your own words in 2-4 sentences each. This is our (3 first opportunity to see your “voice” through your writing, and to see how you understand and interpret the biological information from the textbook. No two students should end up with the same bullet points. You are not using the chapter summary at the end for this. You are synthesizing the information on your own and deciding on what you think was most important information from each chapter. -Chapter 1 is a review of essential biology concepts. If you have not taken biology or did not retain much from your course, this chapter will be very helpful to you. -Chapter 2 is a review of chemistry concepts that are essential for studying biology. Similarly, if you did not retain information about chemical bonds during your chemistry course, this chapter will be very helpful to you.

PART 2: Water and carbon quiz the second week of school. Instructions: Study chapters 3 and 4 and prepare for a closed-notes quiz on chapters 3-4 during the second week of school. Suggested optional preparation: complete the reading guides at the end of this document. -Chapter 3 is about the properties of water. Make sure you understand these properties, how they happen on the molecular level, and why they are essential to life on Earth. -Chapter 4 is about Carbon, functional groups, and molecular structures. You should be able to put some of this information into a broader biological context using the information you learned in chapters 1-2. PART 3: Biological molecules (macromolecules) creative comic assignment due the third week of school. Instructions: In AP Biology, the ability to think creatively and abstractly is key to success. Sometimes you need to step out of the literal world and into a more imaginative headspace in order to understand content as well as make connections and discoveries. In the form of a hand-drawn comic book or storyboard*, you are to create a fictional world, scenario, or story where biological molecules are represented by characters and objects, and biological processes are your plotlines. Your story must involve all four major classes of biological molecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids) and cover at least five of the broad concepts listed in bullet points below. All necessary content for this assignment comes from Chapter 5 and your imagination. This assignment is meant to be both mind-expanding, fun and extremely challenging. Although this assignment is not due until September 19, learning the material and planning the storybook is time consuming--do not wait until September to complete it. Students who begin this assignment in the summer perform best in AP Biology. You are expected to begin it. 1. You must first read all of Chapter 5 in order to get ideas for this assignment. All living things are make up of combinations of the 4 basic classes of macromolecules and you must understand these in depth in order to proceed in AP Biology. We will study them during September. Take notes on the structure and function of these macromolecules. 2. Broad Concepts about macromolecules to include in your storyboard (at least 5 must be included) ● polymerization and depolymerization ● monomers/“building blocks” versus polymers/larger molecules in each category ● hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity ● the major functions of lipids ● the functions of polysaccharides ● the diversity of functions of proteins ● the four levels of protein structure ● the relationship between nucleic acids and protein ● the structure of DNA 3. If, within your comic, the connection to biology is ambiguous, include a “key” on the back of your assignment for clarification. Please do this if you have any doubt on your assignment’s level of ambiguity. Points will be taken off if we can not figure out what biological concepts you were trying to explain in your assignment. Example: I may choose to create a world where green fuzzy monsters rule the land, directing all other
characters throughout my story, but the monsters become dismembered every time it rains… (KEY: Green fuzzy monsters = proteins; dismemberment = depolymerization by the hydrolysis reaction...) GRADING CRITERIA: ✔ All 4 biological molecules are represented ✔ Five of the broad topics are somehow represented (and we, the grader, can figure it out!) ✔ There is a level of abstraction and creativity ✔ There was an effort to draw neatly and clearly and present a nice final product ✔ The storylines and characters reflect a thorough understanding of the actual biological content (even if through metaphor and analogy) ✔ The story has clearly been planned and thought-out *You will not be graded on actual artistic talent but you will be graded on effort.
