Please Note We are anticipating updates this week regarding the Public Health Orders banning in-person gatherings. Given that the uncertainty around the spread of COVID-19 is likely to linger with us through, at least, the spring, we are anticipating a Zoom-based Annual Vestry Meeting (our Annual General Meeting) in late February and Zoom-based options for learning through the spring. If you have technical skills or a willingness to “Google and try”, we are in need of more support in this area. Please see Pastor Ruth.
Current COVID-19 Orders As you may have already seen, Dr Bonnie Henry, our Provincial Health Officer, issued new public health orders effective December 7, 2020. These orders are in effect until Friday, January 8, and depending on COVID-19 numbers, this may be extended. These orders impact the life and ministry of St Stephen’s in the following ways: * Suspending in-person public worship through Advent, Christmas, and to Epiphany. We will be continuing our Morning Prayer via Zoom video and audio call for those Sundays and the Christmas services. We will be without in-person options through Sunday, January 10. And, of course, as soon as we are given the go-ahead by our Health Authorities and the diocese, we will return to having the mix of Zoom and in-person we have been successfully doing since September. * Masks are now mandatory in public spaces. This includes the church, so if you are visiting the building, please wear your mask. * The church remains open and some of our user groups are still able to meet, especially the 12- Step groups. Parishioners and members of the public are welcome to use the sanctuary for private prayer. We are working on a schedule of times to have the building open. Parish office hours are by appointment only. Voicemails are picked up daily, and both Lois and Ruth can be reached by email. Your continued prayers for one another, those impacted by COVID-19, and for those working in public health are much appreciated.

Transforming Questions Hosted by Diocesan Leadership In 11 sessions, we will seek to move deeper by engaging in some of faith’s most basic questions. Let's gather for prayer, hear a presentation, and then join in small-group discussion. Through listening and sharing, we will wrestle with foundational faith questions in each other's company. As we do so, we will learn more about ourselves, one another, and the Jesus we are seeking. Dates: Thursdays, starting January 28, 2021. Session length: 60-75 minutes Place: Zoom Who is it for: adults (16+) preparing for baptism, confirmation, reception into the Anglican Church, or reaffirmation of baptismal vows; those exploring faith for the 1st or the 50th time. Attendance: Sessions are related to and build upon one another, so this is not a drop-in course. Please register in advance as you are encouraged to attend all of the sessions. You can request to be in a small group with someone you know. Registration and More Information: https://www.vancouver.anglican.ca/resources/adult- formation-resources/pages/transforming-questions Deadline to Register: January 21, 2021 Children, Youth & Families As in-person worship is suspended, so is our Sunday School program. Please see Betty S for information on our ministry with children, youth & families or contact the church office.

A Very Special Update on a Former Pawrishioner Pam P has sent in an update on the PADS Golden Retriever, Orville, that she had for just over 3 months in the spring and summer of 2018. You might remember him coming to church with her at that time. At first she carried him up for communion until he was able to follow using a leash. Pam writes, “He went to a wonderful family, after his time with me, to finish being raised and trained. Anyway, he graduated in November as a VIP (Very Important Pet) Dog. This means that he was not suitable as a service dog but could be placed as a pet with a child or adult, who has a disability. So, that is what has happened! He has a new forever home now where he has this wonderful purpose in life of being a companion and helping others. This is so perfect as he has such a sweet, calm temperament and just loves everyone around him! I am very grateful to everyone at St. Stephens who were so supportive of my bringing him to church and by doing this assisted with his training and experience which has led to this wonderful future that he has.” --------------------------- 2020 Order of the Diocese of New Westminster Val Krause would like to express a sincere “thank you” for bestowing her with the Order of The Diocese of New Westminster. Thank you to Elaine for the nomination, to the Council for their approval and to all parishioners for their support. Val said: “It was very meaningful to receive the award in front of our congregation and what a wonderful thing to receive an award for doing what one enjoys so much!”
Please note: All sale dates are pending Public Health Orders permitting gatherings. While the Thrift Shop could technically run, we being cautious for both our shoppers and volunteers. THE THRIFT SHOP IS NOT TAKING DONATIONS AT THIS TIME. Thank You from the Wednesday Lunch Club Thank you so much to everyone who contributed to the Christmas gift bags for those in the Wednesday Lunch Club (an outreach for those who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in our area). The large paper bags were decorated by IgnYte youth who are from St. Laurence, St. Stephen's and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. The youth received the first names of the recipients and personalized the bags. We distributed 22 bags and folks were thrilled with the beautiful bags, what was in them, and the fact that we remembered them all! The bags contained socks, gloves, toques, razors, tissue, chocolate, hot chocolate, toothbrush, toothpaste, candy cane, gift cards for Walmart and McDonalds, home- baked Christmas cookies, peanut brittle, and a slice of Christmas loaf plus cards from IgnYte youth, Pastor Ruth and the volunteers. (The McDonalds gift cards were from the Lions' club). One person who has volunteered with the Lunch cub for years bought books and a game for the young boys, whose grandmother who was in the lunch club and passed away earlier this year.
