From the Executive Director, Renee Cortright After the eruption of Mt. St. Helens in 1980, the first plant to grow from the ashes was the fireweed. It's a wildflower with brilliant colors ranging from pink to purple that can help repair the ecology of a scorched earth. Its presence after this devastating event helped repair human spirits as it filled in valleys and meadows with color and life. During the month of May we had an impressive number of new members join the OPC, 391 to be exact. These members are reengaging and participating in the many dynamic programs and services available at the center, some after having no interactions for at least 14 months prior to the pandemic. Our new and reengaged participants just might be our fireweed at the OPC after the scorching of COVID-19, filling the classrooms and halls with their happy voices and warm spirits. You may not find fireweed in the Stone Cottage Gardens but you’ll find a beautiful palette and variety of flowers to enjoy. The Late Bloomers Gardening group has been hard at work planting new and tending to the lovely gardens. There are several programs in the gardens in July; the garden side poets and the Wine Pairing ~ Fine Art & Music Show (see page 8 & 10) and August brings our annual Summer Soiree, a garden party benefiting Meals on Wheels. Clear skies and perfect temps were the setting for another successful 5K Run/Walk for Meals on Wheels with over 250 both in-person and virtual participants resulting in over $29,000 raised to benefit homebound seniors in need of a nutritious meal and wellness check. Thank you to the runners, walkers, staff, volunteers and the sponsors: Pixley Funeral Homes, Pomeroy Living, American House, Humana, Move-it Fitness, Par Pharmaceutical, Stoney Creek Advisors and the many generous donors who contributed to this great community event! Donations to Meals on Wheels are always welcome! The OPC’s Ultimate Collector Car Show is Saturday, July 31 from 10 am to 1 pm. The day will feature food, fun and activities for all. If you have a classic car you’d like to enter into the show please call Matt Spierling at 248-659-1021. Beginning July 1 there is no mask mandate or capacity limit for participation in activities within the facility per MDHHS. OPC will be closed July 3-5th reopening on the 6th. Enjoy the Fourth of July weekend with your family and friends! Wishing you a Star Spangled Fourth of July! Renee 2
