For me, pharmacy has My wife, Tammie, and I met while we were both students at the University of Mississippi. I initially began my career doing research in drug discovery and development in the pharmaceutical industry before transitioning into academia. As a always offered the perfect pharmacy academician, I’ve helped launch three new schools of pharmacy, and I’m excited to now be here at the University of Charleston. opportunity to combine my desire to help and serve What are some of your goals for the first year as dean? people with my interests in Being new to both West Virginia and to the University of Charleston, one of my goals is to get out around the state and meet science. I love being able to people. I look forward to the opportunity to get to know our alumni, preceptors, and friends of the school. In addition, I look forward to the opportunity to share the story of UCSOP and the great things that we are doing here with a wider audience of potential students from across the nation and the world. lives of our patients. Why did you want to become a pharmacist? For me, pharmacy has always offered the perfect opportunity to combine my desire to help and serve people with my interests in science. I love being able to use my knowledge and skills to make a difference in the lives of our patients. In addition, as a teacher, I’m able to bring first-hand observations from my pharmacy practice into the classroom to help educate our students. I love helping our students build their knowledge base and skill sets and hearing their own stories of how they’ve made a difference for their patients and communities, especially during the COVID pandemic. What is the best advice you’ve ever been given? Try to learn something from every person you meet and every situation that you’re in. Stay awkward, brave, and kind (Brené Brown). What do you like to do in your free time? My wife and I like to travel and experience new places. I’m a big sports fan (Ole Miss Rebels, Kansas City Chiefs, San Antonio Spurs) and an avid reader (who thinks that the Kindle is one of the single greatest inventions ever). What is your favorite movie or book? Having grown up as the son of a preacher, the Bible would be number one on the book list. As a science fiction and fantasy fan, Asimov’s Foundation series is another one of my favorites. For movies, the original “Star Wars” would be at the top of the list, although I’m also a fan of the classics like “Casablanca”, as well. 4 5
