President's Message...... This summer we are saying a fond farewell to some very special board members: Meg President’s Message Ambroson (Special Interest Chair), Cyndy O’Connor (Historian) and Rohita Rajkumar (President). All of these women were active members of the AWA community, volunteering in other activities, participating in events and more importantly they became our friends. It is not easy to say goodbye; but I find that here in Singapore this often translates to hello. We welcome our new AWA members, we welcome new volunteers, and most importantly we welcome the new friendships that we will make. Mel Rice If you are in town over the summer, we still have several activities on the AWA calendar. What a great time of year to try something new? SCOUTING SINGAPORE Scouting Singapore A monthly series highlighting my favorite finds in Singapore By Katie Feltch Scouting Singapore represents the personal views of Katie Feltch, and all subjects are selected by Katie. Any sponsored content in the BT will be clearly marked. shop - Lilliput & felix Another school year, another holiday. In Singapore, we’re all about looking forward to the next holiday and what better way to anticipate a trip than by treating yourself to some new, well-deserved beach and swimwear. I mean, we gotta look good while sipping our piña coladas…right?! My family is checking off a major bucket list holiday this year in the Maldives and I couldn’t be more excited! My first stop though, before I even attempt the dreaded packing, will be my new favorite luxury swim and beachwear brand, Lilliput & Felix. Cat, the designer of sustainable brand Lilliput & Felix, was London based since the brand’s 2014 inception, before recently moving to Singapore with her husband. She conceived Lilliput & Felix with a vision to design a collection that excites women to dress for the beach – unique pieces that evoke confidence, individuality, beauty and femininity. I recently had the pleasure of meeting Cat and viewing the entire collection. It was gorgeous! I wanted to buy everything. But, can we back up for just a sec? Cat is so cool. Like, really cool. She’s sweet, stylish, and so damn artistic. She’s the girl you want to be friends with, just as much as you’d want to raid her closet. Okay, back to the swim and beachwear. Her designs were even more beautiful in person if you can imagine. The fabric is lush and high quality, and the perfect combination of colors and textures. Plus the unique shapes and styles are really flattering! They also have a nostalgic feel to them, like what I imagine Rachel McAdams might wear if they filmed The Notebook 2 – Southeast Asia Edition. Basically, all you need to know is, they’re not your typical bikinis and cover-ups, they’re the ones all your girlfriends will be begging you to spill where you got it. Check out Lilliput & Felix at Edit Lifestyle (Tudor Court) or Colony Clothing (UE Square) or better yet, order online at www.lilliputandfelix.com and receive free shipping and duty paid delivery for your first order with code: L&FlovesAWA at checkout! 10 WWW.AWASINGAPORE.ORG Bamboo Telegraph July/August 2018
SHOP – Tamarind Living Leslie, of Tamarind Living has a trained eye for carefully selecting beautiful, high quality textiles from around the world. Scouting Singapore She travels throughout Asia, Europe and the USA handpicking indigenous, vintage, and artisanal designer fabrics. She then repurposes this unique collection of textiles into gorgeous pillows here in Singapore. Their pillows are works of art. Certainly, a major upgrade from your average throw-pillow situation. Every textile has a story and an artisan behind it, drawing you into the rich culture of the place that it’s from. Leslie takes great pride in getting to know everyone she works with personally; from families that have perfected their craft over generations, to up-and-coming artisans that use modern techniques to tell the story of their heritage. She doesn’t buy from just anyone, she seeks out the artisans that truly love their craft, and otherwise wouldn’t have reach in the Singapore marketplace. The final products are beautiful pillows that add an understated elegance and pop of culture to any room. If you fall in love with one of their fabrics, you can also work directly with Leslie to design table linens, bedding and framed artwork. I especially love the idea of framing one of these stunning textiles to fill a blank wall. It would be such an unexpected statement piece, adding so much character to your home. Make sure you check out www.TamarindLiving.com to shop pillows, explore their travel and artisan inspired blog and discover their newest offering - luxury travel experiences. It’s at least a 3-5 km hike to get to the bridge (depending on where you enter the park), and the climb down is over 500 stairs. So, this is a great place to go on your own, or to take your fit friend, but take Meemaw to the Botanics – not the TreeTop. 2. Go when the bridge is open. It’s closed on Mondays, except Public Holidays. I seem to have an inexplicable mental block on this, so if you show up on a Monday, you’ll likely see a dejected me, muttering to myself and walking back to my car. Again. 3. Once you’re there on the right day, go early or late. Do whatever you can to avoid the midday heat, which will definitely push you onto the Too Much Sweat side of things. Mud. Monkeys. It’s all waiting for you at MacRitchie Reservoir Park. MacRitchie offers miles and miles of hiking trails, a beautiful reservoir, and a dense jungle full of wildlife. But the real jewel of the park is the TreeTop Walk: a 250-meter suspension bridge which spans the two highest points in MacRitchie - Bukit Peirce and Bukit Kalan. At seven stories above the jungle floor, it’s definitely not for the faint-of- heart. But the view, and the feel of the breeze flowing through the trees, and the photo ops from up there – those are all pretty incredible. But here’s what I’ve learned after many an expat adventure: There is a fine line between a Fun Adventure (yay!) and a Nightmare Adventure (yikes!). Some mud is great. Too much mud is suddenly not so great anymore. Same can be said for monkeys, and adrenaline, and sweat. The trick to the TreeTop Walk - like most adventures - is to walk that fine line and keep it fun. That’s where a little 4. Wear decent shoes – the sturdier the better. You’ll encounter people going all Expat Adventures speeds on the trails: from families with toddlers stumbling along, to cross-country runners out for their personal bests. So, try to be aware of others. Don’t walk five abreast, blocking the entire path. If you need to pass someone, just give them a little warning. In short, share the trail. 10. Smile. This is probably the biggest lesson I’ve learned from spending time at MacRitchie. The first few times I went, I noticed that when I passed people on the trail, everyone just stared at the ground as they passed. Locals, other expats, tourists marching along with binoculars and 5. So be that person. 6. While we’re talking about what to bring, I’ll mention something else which seems obvious and yet I forgot it the first time I went to MacRitchie: Water. Even if you park at the closest place possible to the TreeTop Walk, you’ve still got a decent hike to the bridge and back. So water bottles – for everyone in the group – are pretty crucial. You can refill at the Ranger Station right before the bridge, so no need to ration yourself. Just stay hydrated. 7. If you’ve shown up on the right day, at the right time, with the right stuff, and finally made it to the bridge, you’ll come upon a sign that says “ONE WAY ONLY.” This means no U-turns, which makes that first step onto the bridge feel like a serious commitment because there is no going back. SIDER AWA Foreign Tours Presents Foreign Tour Highlights It was a bit of a joke during my time on the AWA Board – I was not interested in a leadership role. I only joined the AWA for tennis and book club… AND FOREIGN TOURS! I can remember arriving in Singapore and flipping through the Bamboo Telegraph looking at photographs of the exciting adventures members had embarked on with the AWA Foreign Tours group. Not only were there tantalizing pictures of beautiful scenery from places like Margaret River, Australia and Myanmar, but you could truly sense the fun and camaraderie from the smiles and laughter of the photographed travelers. Living vicariously through others people’s photos and adventures is just not my style, so I signed up for an AWA foreign tour as soon as the chance arose. I travelled to Myanmar for a seven-day adventure with an amazing group of AWA women. Arriving in Yangon we began our trip visiting Shwedagon Pagoda, then hopped a plane to Bagan. Viewing the massive outlay of temples from a hot-air balloon was a once in a lifetime experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone and lifted me literally and figuratively to new heights. Traveling the waters of Inle Lake, up the tributaries of a mountain, was best described by one of my travel partners as ‘an experience at times from a scene of National Geographic magazine and at others like a ride at Disney.’ I was totally hooked on AWA foreign tours and ended up taking two more trips during my time in Singapore – a short weekend trip to Yogyakarta, Indonesia and a week-long trip to Bhutan. Whether it was shopping with the ladies in the 20 WWW.AWASINGAPORE.ORG Bamboo Telegraph July/August 2018
markets of Yogyakarta or white water rafting down a river in Bhutan, the memories and the friends I made were the most significant moments of my four-year stint in Singapore. Traveling with the AWA women taught me so many life lessons which I continue to draw on even now that I have left Singapore. Foreign Tours/From Our Advertisers I learned how to efficiently calculate individual bills at restaurant tables so as to be able to get back to enjoying touring, a skill I am certain has helped in my accounting classes. I learned that having a bull bearing down on you on a small suspension bridge in Bhutan teaches you courage to face all of life’s challenges. I learned that using squatty potties in a remote monastery in Bhutan, affirms the usefulness of yoga and is doable with encouragement and instructions from your traveling partners. I have learned to appreciate the true value of laughter, conversations with friends after a day of sightseeing and the importance in allowing myself the time to explore and re-charge on my own without kids in tow. When Foreign Tours was put on a hiatus because of lack of volunteers, my greatest wish before I left was to see it resurrected. I ran out of time, but am so pleased to see it offered once again. So don’t miss out! Book that tour and who knows I may just fly back to Singapore for a little AWA trip myself! We loved staying there so much, that we are now a proud owner! Our family has a fabulous 2314sq.ft high floor apartment, and we would like you too to enjoy your stay in KL as much as we did. THE FORK AND CHOPSTICK The Fork and Chopstick Mission: To highlight the off the beaten path, heritage, or just plain fun chomping grounds By Jenni & Eric Lee WILD ROCKET 10A Upper Wilkie Road, Singapore 228119 Here at the Fork and Chopstick we try to make it interesting, cheerful and cheap, but having overseas guests that were looking for a bit of an unusual experience (and were willing to pay…) allowed us to suggest a splurge on Wild Rocket. This Mount Emily area is a surprising part of central Singapore, located behind The Cathay and next to the Istana. Where you would expect more high rises and malls there is actually a mix of low rise residences and greenery. The area has an interesting history, from the inception of Singapore where some of the original nutmeg plantations were located, to becoming part of the Japanese quarters prior to WWII. Mount Emily is also near Mount Caroline and Mount Sophia where the names of the hills supposedly come from the names of the daughters of Charles Robert Prinsep, one of the original plantation owners. AMBIENCE/DECOR & SERVICE: The restaurant itself is a bit hidden, located in “No frills-just fun” hostel, Hangout@Mt. Emily. Decorated in artisan concrete and enormous wooden interlocking pieces that dominate the room, serene warmth greets us as we enter. The cutlery drawers at the table was a fun touch and the service first-rate and friendly. A polished restaurant in an unexpected location of a budget hotel! SATURDAY NIGHT DINNER: The lawyer-turned-chef has developed the theme of what he refers to as “Mod Sin” - a bit of a modern twist on this region’s dishes and flavors… Although dishes can be ordered a la carte, we had the “small menu” of five courses for $76++, which was satisfying for us. Gado gado with peanut ice cream was a play on normal gado gado with the peanut ice cream acting as the dressing. It’s sweet/ spicy/coldness both complemented each other and created an interesting contrast. Some other tips of the hat to local flavors were deep fried Japanese oysters with tom kha gai sauce, prawn pasta with chili sambal, and iberico pork jowl cooked “ter kar chor”. For dessert, Wild Rocket Chendol was a standout - familiar flavors with varied textures and arrangement. Interestingly the drink menu was heavy on Japanese sake versus wine. WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING: 4.7/5 stars on Facebook and 4/5 on Tripadvisor. “Rocketing new heights of gastronomic pleasures”, “Understated yet classy design”, “Excellent mix of flavours and great presentation”. RANT & RAVE: A bit tricky to find but your taste buds will thank you. PRE/POST MEAL: Next door is Kult Kafe, an old Victorian style villa that is lit up at night. The real charm is to relax and chill while enjoying cocktails and ales outside in balmy weather. Bamboo Telegraph July/August 2018 WWW.AWASINGAPORE.ORG 25

GOLF SHOTS Golf Shots tHE awa gOLFERS lOOK bACK AT A GREAT SEASON AND lOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT YEAR The AWA Golfers had a wonderful season with great golf outings on Singapore’s many beautiful Country Clubs. We enjoyed amazing landscaping, colorful flowers, very lush greenery, lots of water, bunkers, exotic jungle creatures like monkeys, monitor lizards, turtles, and birds like African Cranes. We celebrated Holidays like Christmas, Chinese New Year and Easter. Peng graciously invited the AWA golf team to her house for a very authentic Chinese New Year celebration and delicious dinner in her beautiful backyard. Golf Pro Lee Carrington offered “learn and return to play” Golf Lessons at the picturesque Champions Golf Course. Our 9 holes Golf Team is playing there every Thursday. The team followed the HSBC LPGA ladies on Sentosa, enjoyed some night golfing at Marina Bay with many “Easter Bunny Ears” and an enjoyable late happy hour at Tammy’s apartment with fascinating Bay Views. Our annual golf trip brought us to Penang in Malaysia where we played three rounds of golf on world class courses and enjoyed exploring Georgetown, the delicious Malay food and great friendships. Every season we are fortunate to welcome new golfing ladies, but sadly every June or even earlier we have to say good bye to best friends. This year Isabelle Dermine and Jennifer Stark are moving back to their home countries France and the United States, but definitely will be missed as challenging golf partners and wonderful friends. The AWA golfers look forward to welcome new team members for the 2018 / 2019 season. Please visit our golf table at the Welcome Back Fair, join us on Facebook @ “AWA Golf” or contact the golf captains at 18holesgolf@singapore.org or 9holesgolf@singapore.org 30 WWW.AWASINGAPORE.ORG Bamboo Telegraph July/August 2018
WALKING Walking Group end of season update It has been a busy walking year, indeed! As we welcome several new members, we also say so long and thank you to several of our walking leaders, including Gloria, Anne-Marie, Vicky, Rachel and most recently Breana. We welcome Elaine Grout-Brown and Andrea McKenna-Brankin as our new co-chairs. We would like to congratulate the walkers who walked and completed the 16 segments of the Round-The-Island (RTI) series of walks. This is a continuous circle around the island which started in 2015-16 for the longer walks on Mondays. The route stays as close to the coast line as possible. Each segment is 10 to 12 km and the entire route totals approximately 170 km in length. Well done ladies! Our other Monday and Wednesday walkers have been busy, too, visiting various parts of the Island, including: Botanic Gardens, Fort Canning Park, Bukit Timah Reserve, Alexandra Canal Linear Park, and Bedok Reservoir to name a few. Monday and Wednesday walks will continue over the summer, to the extent that leaders are available, and these will be posted as events on the Walking Group Facebook page. The RTI segments will resume in September. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for further information and details on walks at https://www.facebook.com/groups/AWAwalkingwithwomen/. Not yet a member of the walking group and interested in joining? Simply message or send a request to join the Facebook page – all AWA members are welcome to join and there is no cost to attend the walks. Or contact Elaine or Andrea at walking@awasingapore.org. We look forward to seeing you in September for the start of the 2018-19 walking season! Bamboo Telegraph July/August 2018 WWW.AWASINGAPORE.ORG 31
