The Lighthouse First Algoma Lighthouse Originally known as Wolf River, Algoma was settled by English and Irish pioneers in 1851. Dubbed An-Ne-Pe, meaning “land of the great gray wolf” by the Pottawatomie Indians, the village eventually became known as Ahnapee. 42 Take the Scenic Shortcut! A SCENIC SHORTCUT TO THE PENINSULA AWAITS! 42 Leave I-43 behind and meander in the countryside using exit 157 to County V East. Follow the Algoma signs through Francis Creek and the charming village of Mishicot, then on to Highway 42 and the Lakeshore. As you head north on Highway 42, you will travel the scenic shoreline of Lake Michigan through Kewaunee and Algoma all the way to the Peninsula. Save time and breathe easier. MISHICOT: A RIVER TOWN WITH HISTORY Mishicot began as a sawmill town and pioneer farming center in the 1800s. Learn more at the Mishicot Historical Museum and Research Center. Fox Hills Resort is a staple of Mishicot, offering 45 holes of golf on one of the largest courses in the state, including a 42 championship eighteen. The Twin Rivers Water Trail promotes the development and safe use of a water trail for human powered watercraft along the East and West Twin Rivers and spotlights the rich natural habitat and cultural history in and around the rivers. Visit the Village Park, located in the heart of Mishicot, and try your hand at baseball or softball, and even skateboarding. Or just enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Riverwalk. Biking, skiing, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling are other opportunities that are available in season. Lastly, try hiking on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, which passes through the village and surrounding area. Take a self-guided walking tour of the 43 homes built in this 42 National Register of Historic Places. . . Kewaunee Harbor Park, offers visitors a newly renovated seawall and boardwalk, creating a walking path from the historical Kewaunee Lighthouse to the Ahnapee State Trail. Along the seawall is the Tug Ludington, one of only five ships still afloat that participated in the D-Day invasion at Normandy Beach. Across the street look for the Grandfather Clock and the Fire Museum.
