WEST COAST HERITAGE SITES 22 23 The West Coast was known to Māori as Te Tai o Poutini, and was renowned for its precious pounamu (jade). Pakeha (European settlers) later came in search of other rich resources such as gold, coal and timber. Many of the historic features they left are accessible today by road or on walks of varying length. Those listed here are easily found, well marked and in many cases interpreted via information panels, brochures and books. In addition, there are numerous roadside plaques and stopping places where information panels have historic content. Even the old cemeteries have their stories to tell. Visitor information centres and i-SITES have further details plus, in some cases, directions to more distant #westcoastnz westcoast.co.nz and difficult to find historic places not on the following map. Also visit www.heritagewestcoast.co.nz and download the footprints brochure.
