Greene County, Pennsylvania Welcome to Greene! Greene County, Pennsylvania is an excursion to a simpler time! It is a place that celebrates history and tradition, while looking forward to the future. It is a place where you can follow a path known as the Warrior Trail, created by Native Americans over 5,000 years ago; walk along a portion of a 250-year-old surveying expedition resulting in the Mason-Dixon line; explore a perfectly preserved century-old foundry and machine shop; or visit a nationally acclaimed university that is educating the current generation for the future. Looking for fun and adventure? Bike along the Monongahela River, see a movie at a rare and iconic drive-in theater in Carmichaels, or drive through the countryside (especially during the fall season for scenic foliage). Visit seven historic covered bridges, swim and play at the region’s foremost water parks, play golf, go fishing, visit a farm, hike, run, or hunt. Weekend Trips If you happen to be in the neighborhood for a weekend, you should try… Eastern Greene County Greet the morning – and the Monongahela River – at the Potters’ Landing kayak launch in Greensboro. After some paddling, come back for a tour of the borough’s historic district and art sites, or hit the Warrior Trail, and end the day with a real splash at Mon View Pool. On your second day, grab lunch to go at Hungarian Smokehouse, and journey into Old Town Carmichaels – make sure you hit Town Square – to see Greene Academy and Carmichaels Covered Bridge. Finally, head just up the road to take in a movie at SkyView Drive-In. Western Greene County Grab a bite to eat at Stokes General Merchandise before taking a day-long tour of four Covered Bridges (King, Scott, Shriver, and Woods). Keep your eyes peeled for some Mail Pouch Barns too! End your night in a cabin at Cole’s Greene Acres Farm, and wake up the next day ready to take on hiking Ryerson Station State Park. If it’s mid-July, be sure to swing by the Jacktown Fairgrounds for one of the oldest continuously running fairs. Southern Greene County Pick up flowers, gifts, and a bottle of wine made onsite at Shields Herb & Flower Farm/Demesne Winery, before heading to Mason-Dixon Park for a walk and nature watch. Start Day 2 with a quick trip to the I-79 North Welcome Center to view a tribute to mining history, then head to Garards Fort to see the White Covered Bridge, and tour the Corbly Memorial Baptist Church and nearby cemetery containing the monument to a tragic Indian massacre. Northern Greene County Gear up and drive through the Cox Covered Bridge on your way to pet the locals at Lippencott Alpacas. Start your next day with a hike on the Greene River Trail, get lost in the history of industry on the Monongahela River at the W.A. Young & Sons Foundry and Machine Shop now a National Historic Landmark. End your day by unwinding with a glass of wine at Thistlethwaite Vineyards. Central Greene County Waynesburg may be the county seat, but you’ll hardly have time to sit if you’re in town. Enjoy a morning tee off at Rohanna’s Golf Course. From there, it’s a short drive down the road to the Greene County Historical Museum, where you can view exhibits of local artifacts. If it’s a summer afternoon, chances are something will be happening at the Greene County Fairgrounds, or catch a Waynesburg University football game in the fall. Spend your second day in the heart of Historic Waynesburg Borough, strolling Downtown’s collection of eateries and retail shops featuring antiques, art, clothes, and handmade crafts. COVERED BRIDGE DRIVING TOUR Starting Point: Waynesburg, PA (Round Trip: 77 miles) Take Route 21 East to I-79 (approx. 2.4 mi). Head I-79 North to Exit 19 (4.3 mi). Follow PA-221 S (2.7 mi.) Bridge is on your right on Kennel Road. Total trip: approx. 9 miles (easy drive). Cox (Lippencott) Covered Bridge 39˚56’36”N 80˚7’35”W Cox Farm Covered Bridge Length: 31 ft. 11 in. Width: 14 ft. 2 in. Truss Type: Kingpost Year Built: 1943 Builder: Unknown Cox Farm Bridge is the shortest covered bridge in the county and has horizontal siding, a sheet metal roof, one concrete abutment and one stone and mortar reinforced with concrete abutment. It was constructed during World War II with wood due to a shortage of steel. The Cox Farm Bridge was restored in 2013 through grant funding that replaced deteriorated wood and installed five steel beams to carry traffic loads. Carmichaels Covered Bridge Continue on PA-221 S to PA-188 E/Jefferson Road (1.9 mi). Turn left onto PA-188 E/Jefferson Road (5.5 mi). 39˚53’55”N 79˚58’38”W Turn right onto Rt 88 South toward Carmichaels (3.7 mi). Turn left onto W Greene St for one block and left onto N Market St. The bridge is on your left on Old Town Rd and Greene Academy of Art will be ahead on your right. Total trip: 11.3 miles (easy drive). Carmichaels Covered Bridge Length: 64 ft. 5 in. Width: 13 ft. 5 in. Truss Type: Queenpost Year Built: 1889 Builder: Unknown Carmichaels Bridge has vertical board and batten siding, a gable roof covered with raised-seam tin, and abutments of cut stone and mortar reinforced with concrete. One of the abutments has been reinforced with concrete and additional diagonal timbers reinforce the queenpost truss. The bridge was rehabilitated in 1998 and has been a site of the annual Covered Bridge Festival since its inception in 1970. Take N Market St to W George St (0.2 mi). Turn right onto W George St to Rt 21 W (1.5 mi) Turn right onto Rt 21 W and turn left onto Muddy Creek Rd (0.1 mi). Follow Muddy Creek Rd to Carmichaels Rd (2.5 mi). Turn left onto Carmichaels Rd and follow (2.8 mi). Turn right onto Garards Fort Rd (2 mi). The bridge is on your White Covered Bridge left on Roberts Run Rd. Total trip: 9.4 miles (moderate drive). 39˚48’24”N 80˚03’39”W White Covered Bridge Length: 77 ft. 6 in. Width: 13 ft. 5 in. Truss Type: Queenpost Year Built: 1919 Builder: Unknown While a 1990 state survey determined the White Bridge was built in 1900, other sources, including a local resident born in 1911, clearly remember it being built around 1919. White Bridge has vertical tongue-and-groove siding, a gable roof covered with sheet metal, and abutments of cut stone and mortar. It is the longest covered bridge in the county and has an exceptionally high queenpost structure with a clearance of 17 feet, 6 inches. There are eight steel beams to support the structure. The White Bridge has been an Annual Covered Bridge Festival site since 2002. Continue on Garards Fort Rd to Rt 218 S (10.6 mi). Turn left onto Rt 218 S (1.0 mi). Continue straight onto Warrior Trail Rd (0.6 mi). Continue onto Bluff Ridge Rd (2.5 mi). Turn left onto Oak Forest Rd (3.6 mi). The bridge is on your right on Kings Sister Hill Rd. Total trip: 18.6 miles (difficult drive). King Covered Bridge King Covered Bridge Length: 56 ft. 2 in. Width: 13 ft. 10 in. Truss Type: Queenpost Year Built: 1890 Builder: Unknown 39˚45’25.2”N 80˚16’21”W With a few boards missing here and there on the sides, this rustic bridge is covered with unpainted random-width vertical board siding. The roof is covered with steel metal and the deck with crosswise planking. The structure of the bridge rests on cut stone abutments, which are extended to form short wingwalls slightly higher than the road level. It has the typical narrow lengthwise opening under the eaves. The bridge was restored in 2004 and reinforced with five steel beams. Return north on Oak Forest Rd (1.2 mi). Bear left onto Hoovers Run Road (2.8 mi). Turn left onto Bluffridge Rd and continue onto Warrior Rd (0.5 mi). Take a sharp right onto Hargus Creek Rd (0.8 mi). Turn right to stay on Hargus Creek Rd (3.2 mi). The bridge is on your right on Turkey Hollow Rd. Total trip: 8.7 miles (difficult drive). *The directions provided are based upon moderate road conditions and may not be the most direct routes. Please be aware that many of these bridges are located on roads that are very narrow and are in remote settings. Many of the bridges are Shriver Covered Bridge surrounded by private property. Shriver Covered Bridge Length: 45 ft. 5 in. Width: 14 ft. 6 in. Truss Type: Queenpost Year Built: 1900 Builder: Unknown Shriver Bridge has random-width unpainted vertical board siding on both sides and portals, a gable roof covered with tin, and a deck of crosswise planking. The Shriver Bridge is reinforced with six steel I-beams and rests on cut stone abutments that appear to have been laid dry and has wingwalls of similar material that extend a little above the road level. The bridge was reconstructed in 2013. Return right on Hargus Creek Rd (1.2 mi). Turn left onto Rt 18 N (0.5 mi). Take a sharp left onto Rt 21 W (2.9 mi). The bridge is on your left on Covered Bridge Rd. Total trip: 4.6 miles (difficult drive). Scott Covered Bridge Length: 54 ft. Width: 14 ft. 2 in. Truss Type: Queenpost Year Built: 1885 Builder: William Lang Scott Bridge is covered with unpainted vertical boards on both sides and portals, a roof of Scott Covered Bridge sheet metal, and a deck of crosswise planking. One side window is cut into the center of the 39˚53’15”N 80˚19’33”W queenpost truss structure in addition to the typical lengthwise openings under the eaves of the bridge. The Scott Bridge was rebuilt in 2008 and reinforced with six steel I-beams and rests on cut stone abutments. Return left onto Rt 21 E (6.8 mi). Take a slight right onto Preachers Rd (0.4 mi) and take a sharp left onto Rt 21 W (0.4 mi) to access Oak Forest Rd. Turn left onto Oak Forest Rd (1.8 mi.) The bridge is on your right on Woods Rd. Total trip: 9.6 miles (moderate drive). Woods (Neddie Woods) Covered Bridge Length: 43 ft. Width: 13 ft. 1 in. Truss Type: Queenpost Year Built: 1882 Builder: Lisbon Scott Serving as the oldest covered bridge that remains standing in Greene County, this bridge was named for Edward (Ned or Neddie) W. Wood, a Civil War veteran who owned the land on which the bridge was built in 1882. Woods Bridge is covered on both sides with unpainted vertical plank siding, a gable roof covered with corrugated sheet metal, and abutments of cut stone block. The structure was rehabilitated in 2005 and reinforced with six steel I-beams. Woods (Neddie Woods) Covered Bridge 39˚51’46.8”N 80˚14’4”W Return north to Oak Forest Rd (1.8 mi), turn right on Rt 21 E and continue to Waynesburg, Pa. (3.6 mi). Total trip: approx. 5.4 miles (easy drive).
