WHY NUCB? Nagoya University of Commerce and Business, the first generation private university in Japan, was founded in 1935 by Yuichi Kurimoto, who was the first Japanese person to graduate from the University of Alberta in 1930 and the founder of the Kurimoto Educational Institution (KEI). Over the last 80 years, the university has become known worldwide as a 98.2 NUCB Employment Success Rate 2020 % premier educational institution. The school was the first undergraduate school in Japan, and part of only 5% of business schools worldwide to hold the prestigious AACSB accreditation. Our picturesque Nisshin campus is home to over 3,000 students with approximately 10% of international students representing over 35 nationalities, offering a diverse community full of global talent. The 100 school has exchange agreements with over 100 world-class universities across more than 40 countries with a growing number of double degree partners. % Case Study Method GREATER NAGOYA 35 Greater Nagoya is a center of manufacturing craftsmanship, with strong connections to the automotive, aircraft, and industrial robot industries. A distinctive food culture exists full of local delicacies such as kishimen (noodles), tebasaki (chicken wings), misonikomi udon (miso boiled udon), and much more. Average Class Size Located in central Japan, Greater Nagoya functions as the transportation Global BBA hub of the country making travel to other destinations fast and easy. There are also many well-known tourist spots, such as Hida-Takayama in Gifu or Ise and Toba in Mie, which are easily reached by train from Nagoya. Nagoya also has a well-developed public transportation FACTS & FIGURES network of subway and bus lines that make commuting or shopping very easy. 1
♯ 1 Largest Campus in Aichi Prefecture Nisshin/Nagakute Campus Maria, Mexico (NewPort High School) 157 For me the curriculum was attractive and I found the case method interesting, too. I was looking for something different and new with a schedule that allows for free time for extracurricular activities. Of course the case method is intimidating at first, since it is very different from a traditional education, but everyone gets used to it after some practice. International Students April 2021 Thomas, France (Lycée de la méditerranée) After I finished high school in France, I wanted to discover a new country with a different culture. One of my favorite classes at NUCB has been Business Negotiation as it trained me to speak more confidently as I am naturally quite shy. It was a great class to learn about contracts and negotiation. 12 Hasan, Libya (UWC Isak Japan) NUCB uses the case method with students from all over the world which was the most appealing point to me. After studying on the IB I did not want to go back to traditional methods of learning of memorization and exams. From my perspective, the case method is the best way to learn as it is practical. Nationalities of Faculty Teaching on Nadine, Swiss/Indonesia (Regents International School Pattaya) Global BBA I love the fact that the area is peaceful and quiet, the rent is cheap and that you don't have to worry about usage of utilities. Nagoya is also great because it’s in Central Japan which makes travelling quite convenient because you can hop on the Shinkansen and travel to Tokyo or Osaka real quick. It’s also not as crowded as Tokyo so it’s not as stressful commuting around. Arshia, India (The International School Bangalore) The best part of NUCB’s housing is that our dorm rooms are fully equipped. In the girls' dorm, we have private rooms, each with a washing machine, refrigera- tor, kitchenette, microwave, and bathroom. Not having a roommate gives you freedom and your own personal space. It's also very convenient to live close to campus Data as of June 2021 and to live near our classmates. 2
MISSION Our mission is to educate innovative and ethical leaders who possess a ‘Frontier Spirit’ and to create knowledge that advances business and society. Our students will have the ability to bridge the gap between New Asia and the rest of the world. FRONTIER SPIRIT "Frontier Spirit" refers to the school's mission to create leaders rather than followers, to nurture young persons who think creatively and independently and to impart to students the skills and qualities that they will need to become pioneers in the future. Specifically, "Frontier Spirit" refers to the spirit of a person who never gives up and who, by acting in an original manner, seeks to benefit humanity, society, and the nation. GLOBAL BBA Dr. Anthony Townley Ph.D. Macquarie University (Australia) NUCB offers a diverse curriculum that addresses the key issues facing businesses today, including the digital economy, risk, talent, innovation and sustainability. The Case Method is designed to prepare students for the realities of professional practice, whereby they are required to respond to real-world situations through a process of critical thinking, communication, and group dynamics in the classroom. COURSE INFORMATION All the classes in our university are organized by the quarter system (the academic year is split into 2 semesters, equaling 4 terms in total) and each class will be completed in a single term (lasting 7 weeks). Utilizing the case method, each class lasts 200 minutes long (100 minutes x 2).There will be a maximum of 5 classes per week, and in the majority of cases, students will have only one class per day. This allows ample time for the preparation of self-study of cases, extracurricular activities, and part-time work Spring Semester: April - August Fall Semester: September - March Term 1: April - May Term 3: September - October Term 2: June - July Term 4: November - January CASE METHOD The case method is at the core of the NUCB Undergraduate School academic experience. In its simplest form, each case is a simulation of a real-world business problem, and students are expected to take on the role of the protagonist, or decision-maker, to solve that problem and discuss the reasoning or logic behind each of their decisions. The case method process involves individual preparation followed by small group discussion and finally class discussion. Through repeated practice of our 3-Step learning process, students learn the thought processes necessary for problem solving as well as honing decision-making abilities. 3
STEP 1: Individual preparation Students are required to spend around 3 hours reading the assigned case carefully. They need to complete their preparation by generating a hypothesis and considering questions assigned before the class. STEP 2: Group discussion Small group discussions occur on the day of the class to consider the hypotheses and analyses of each member, debating opinions and answers to assigned questions. Each member can clarify their thinking to gain a deeper understanding of the case. STEP 3: Class discussion Participant discussion is facilitated and evaluated by the course instructor, who uses polls and discussion questions to encourage conversation, pushing participants to consider how a company in a scenario should proceed and fielding reactions to responses from other participants. This meeting of opinions from different perspectives leads to deeper consideration of differing perspectives and approaches to a problem. The ultimate goal of the case method is not reaching one conclusion as a class, but encouraging reflection on individual attitudes and approaches in preparation for situations similar to those in cases that they have studied and debated. CURRICULUM The first three years of the Global BBA program are pre-registered core courses, and Year 4 will offer elective opportunities for students. The curriculum contains several Liberal Arts and introductory courses built into Year 1, providing a holistic and fundamental foundation. As the program progresses, the content dives deeper into business fundamentals at the organizational level in Year 2, culminating with managerial and leadership perspectives in Years 3 and 4. Case Writing is the capstone project of the Global BBA program and courses are organized throughout Years 3 and 4 through 4 seminars. The submission of an Original Case (instead of a traditional thesis/dissertation that tends to be customary in an academic program) is a mandatory graduation requirement. There are also NUCB Summer and Winter Programs available each year. https://www.nucba.ac.jp/en/gbba/curriculum.html INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMS NUCB Undergraduate School has established a strong global network of over 100 prestigious higher educational institutions around the world, forming a so-called 'Global Campus', in order to nurture business leaders and entrepreneurs who can succeed in a rapidly globalizing world. Students will be able to study at these partner schools through a double degree program, exchange program or summer program while tuition fees at partner schools are waived. 4
