She delivered her sweet baby girl, Saylor Hill Spigner, on March 6. Over the past nine months, she enjoyed seeing the miracle God has created within her and looked forward to seeing her husband connect with Saylor. Despite the joys which came from her pregnancy, Mrs. Spigner expressed how she missed going on long runs, and is now looking forward to returning to her routine. She revealed that she was most nervous about adding the role of motherhood to what God has placed in front of her. When asked what she learned from her pregnancy she replied, “I especially learned dependency on the Lord through seeing how He orchestrates everything. I have found myself surrendering to His plan and purpose.” Our students and staff look forward to meeting Saylor, and ask the HCA community to pray for Mr. and Mrs. Spigner and Emilee Glaze and Heather Spigner their new addition to the family!
LET'S GET ACQUAINTED PTF President Interview with Diane Rigdon by Christina Lindsey Mrs. Diane Rigdon is the president of our PTF council. She has two sons at Heritage Christian Academy: Nathan and Caleb Rigdon. The Rigdon family has been a part of our school for seven years. Since she first joined the community, she has served on the PTF committee for four consecutive years and as president for the past two. She explains, “I enjoy serving, and this environment is wonderful to serve in. I also enjoy making new friends through the process.” Through these experiences, she describes she has learned several things: “I have learned to rely on God, trusting in Him to work through me and the PTF council.” Some upcoming events she would like to encourage everyone to participate in are the Spring Social / Chrysler Test Drive and Feed the Need. The Spring Social will be on April 10 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm along with the Chrysler Test Drive (reminder: you must be 18 to test drive). Feed the Need will kick off on April 9, and the actual event will occur May 8. Although she has accomplished much this school year, she is already planning the 2018-19 school year. She hopes to continue to bring families closer and serve our teachers for the betterment of our school. Her last comment to all parents and students is: “Check Logan Bailey and Dave Scherbarth those email announcements and come support our school and Staff Spotlight with Athletic Director Dave Scherbarth participate in as many events as you can! We look forward to bringing HCA into the bright future God has for us.” By Caleb Thrasher and Logan Bailey In this edition of Staff Spotlight, Dave Scherbarth was interviewed about his job as Athletic Director (AD). When asked about his transition into AD, Scherbarth mentioned how he has “always been involved in athletics, so the transition was pretty easy” and “when you have a passion for something, it seems relatively simple to you.” He fills many roles in the athletic department, but his favorite part of the job is seeing students grow and develop, which he says is always the purpose of the athletic program. He mentions that the world is competitive, so athletics is a chance to handle ups and downs before leaving school. BASEBALL BAT EXPERIMENT BY ABBY VANDIVER Mrs. Franklin’s Physics Class recently acquired a PocketLab Voyager. The PocketLab can measure many things including: Acceleration, Magnetic Field, Angular Velocity, and Humidity. On Tuesday, March 20th students were introduced to the PocketLab and were asked to each come up with an experiment. After reviewing the experiments on Wednesday, March 21st Mrs. Franklin chose to test Seth Jolley’s experiment. Seth is the starting center fielder for the HCA Baseball team. He bats second in the lineup and he leads the team in doubles. He wanted to measure acceleration and angular velocity of his baseball swing. On Friday morning, March 23rd the students walked to the Baseball field to test his experiment. The PocketLab was taped to the knob of the bat. Seth swung several times to warm up, and students took turns measuring the acceleration and velocity of his swing. After he swung around 100 times, the bat was given to me. I was chosen to be tested when the class learned that I had never swung a bat before. My swings were less impressive. However, I did hit one ball. Lastly, Jacey Dawson, the starting first baseman for HCA softball, took a turn. Her swings were good, but she was swinging a baseball bat, which is much heavier than a softball bat. Special to thanks to Mrs. Franklin for purchasing the PocketLab, and Christian Smaw for soft tossing the baseballs! Science teachers Rebecca Frankilin, Sarah Smith, Lyn Gunter and John Bohin went to Atlanta to hone their skills at the National Conference on Science Education March 15 and 16th. While there, the team became friends with a group from California, PocketLab, who donated a 3D printer to HCA!
