Issue 10 Thursday June 17, 2021 A wonderful morning at Available free online with news from West River, Hopetoun, Jerdacuttup, Munglinup, and Lake King and Ravensthorpe Ravy’s Biggest Morning Tea The Ravensthorpe 2021 Biggest Morning Tea was hosted by the Hospital Auxiliary in the beautiful Community Centre building and courtyard. The morning was filled with sunshine, friendship and fundraising as our community came together to enjoy some delicious baking whilst raising funds for the Cancer Council. The fantastic amount of $1,435.80 raised will help to fund vital research and ensure people with cancer and their loved ones can access support. Thanks must go to Denise from Feet With Flair for setting up her pop-up shop and to everyone who came along or bought a raffle ticket. In the lead up to the morning tea the auxiliary ladies kindly put together some lovely hampers to raffle for the hospital. Once again there was tremendous support from the community and this raffle which was drawn at the Biggest Morning Tea raised $1,659.15. This money will go towards the purchase of new covid safe (wipeable) chairs for our hospital residents and their visitors. The Hospital Auxiliary is incredibly grateful to our wonderful community and wish to thank everyone for their support. —Rae G ■ Photos supplied. More photos pages 6-9

DBM can rapidly evolve resistance to insecticides and reduced sensitivity to a range of chemistries is widespread in Australia. The preferred effective chemistries currently available for DBM control in canola are emamectin benzoate (ie: Affirm®, group 6), spinetoram (ie: Success® Neo, group 5) and Bacillus thuringiensis subsp kurstaki (group 11). Group 28 chemistry could soon be available as an additional mode of action option. To maximise the effective life of these products, grower and advisors should use chemicals only when necessary, and rotate mode of action groups by adhering to GRDC’s Resistance Management Strategy (RMS) for DBM in Australian canola. Canola growers are advised to avoid pyrethroid (Group 3A) and organophosphate (Group 1B) insecticides in canola when DBM is problematic. Insecticides will not kill unhatched eggs. In heavy infestations, two spray applications five to seven days apart may be required to achieve adequate control. It is important to adhere to withholding periods when spraying before harvest, noting that windrowing is defined as the harvest event. ■ A DPIRD diamondback moth trap in roadside radish. Page 18 - Community Spirit, Thursday June 17, 2021 PADDOCK PRACTICES: Managing canopy growth in higher rainfall zones to maximise yield Crop canopy is not just a good indicator of plant health and vigour, it is also a crucial factor in achieving full yield potential, particularly in higher rainfall situations. Field Applied Research (FAR) Australia Managing Director Nick Poole says canopy management is essential for optimising available sunlight, water use efficiency and nutrient uptake. “Growing a wheat or barley crop pivots around anthesis, or flowering,” he says. “Targeting optimum flowering windows by matching cultivar with sowing dates will not only help to avoid heat stress and minimise frost risk, it will also help to maximise growth and align the most important development period for setting yield potential (stem elongation to head emergence) with environment. ■ The canopy needs to capture all available sunlight to build “Grain quality and yield are often the inherited the carbohydrates for grain fill. consequences of pre-anthesis management and growth.
