ORDER OF SERVICE We meet in the presence of God All who knows our needs, hears our cries, feels our pain, and heals our wounds. The Bishop of Plymouth, The Rt Rev’d Nicholas McKinnel, welcomes the congregation and says: We come as a city in mourning to remember those killed in the tragic shootings in Keyham last Thursday, and to pray for those who mourn the loss of loved ones and all who have been affected by the shocking events of that night. We give thanks for the courage and compassion that we have seen in recent days, and we pray that out of this tragedy we may become a community where all may feel safe, valued and cared for. God our refuge and strength, close at hand in our distress; meet us in our sorrow and lift our eyes to the peace and light of your constant care. Help us so to hear your word of grace that our fear will be dispelled by your love, our loneliness eased by your presence and our hope renewed by your promises in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. We keep a minute’s silence to remember before God: Maxine Davison Sophie Martyn Lee Martyn Stephen Washington Kate Shepherd and the man who murdered them, Jake Davison.
A prayer led by The Rt Rev’d Mark O’Toole, Roman Catholic Bishop of Plymouth God of compassion and love, let your peace rest gently on the people of Keyham, particularly on those who have lost family, friends or neighbours. Watch over them in their grief. Keep this community safe as it seeks time to heal, and neighbours rebuild their lives in friendship, trust and hope; for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen. Hymn Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide; When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me. Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day; Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away; Change and decay in all around I see – O Thou who changest not, abide with me. I need Thy presence every passing hour; What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r? Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me. I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless; Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness; Where is death’s sting? Where, grave, thy victory? I triumph still, if Thou abide with me. Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies; Heav’n’s morning breaks, and earth’s vain shadows flee; In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.
The Lord Lieutenant of Devon, David Fursdon, Her Majesty the Queen’s Personal Representative in Devon, will say a few words. Psalm 130, read by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth, Councillor Terri Beer 1 Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD. 2 Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications! 3 If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? 4 But there is forgiveness with you, so that you may be revered. 5 I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I hope; 6 my soul waits for the Lord more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning. 7 O Israel, hope in the LORD! For with the LORD there is steadfast love, and with him is great power to redeem. 8 It is he who will redeem Israel from all its iniquities.
Address As the choir sings “Peace like a river”, five candles are lit for the victims of the shootings by: Tracey Lee, Chief Executive of Plymouth City Council Councillor Bill Stevens, Ward Councillor for Keyham Superintendent Jennifer Bristow, Devon and Cornwall Police David Yuill, Head Teacher of Ford Primary School Arezoo Farahzad, on behalf of other faiths Those outside are invited to light a candle or place flowers in front of the church, either now or after the service. Hymn Make me a channel of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring your love; Where there is injury, your pardon Lord; And where there’s doubt, true faith in you. O Master, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved, as to love with all my soul. Make me a channel of your peace. Where there’s despair in life, let me bring hope; where there is darkness, only light; and where there’s sadness, ever joy. O Master, grant that I may never seek so much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved, as to love with all my soul. Make me a channel of your peace. It is in pardoning that we are pardoned, in giving to all men that we receive, and in dying that we’re born to eternal life.
