A level Spanish induction assignment
                       2021
There are four strands to the summer home learning:
   ➢ Wider-reading
   ➢ Written assignment
   ➢ Presentation
   ➢ Grammar and Translation
This work has been designed to:
➢ Prepare you for the demands of the A-Level course
➢ Help you get into the habit of wider-reading and research
➢ Bring your grammar up to scratch
You should have this work ready for the first lesson back.
If you have any problems completing the work, or need any advice, you can
contact us at:
stjesso@monkswalk.herts.sch.uk or pemadda@monkswalk.herts.sch.uk on
the understanding that we may not reply immediately.

Over the summer, you should also ensure that you:
✓ Purchase the AQA A-level Spanish Year 1 and AS text book.
✓ Set out your folder for the year. You will need a lever-arch file with sub-
dividers for at least each of the six “themes”, the film, grammar and
      wider reading.

Complete the tasks and bring them to your first
                      lesson in September

Remember, you will take from the course what you put in. Students who put in
plenty of independent work are always the most successful.
                ¡Mucha suerte y buenas vacaciones!

Task 1 - Wider-reading log

For the new A-Level course, you will actually be marked on your
wider knowledge of the themes studied and how they relate to
Spanish speaking countries. You are expected to read around the
themes on a weekly basis, and you should get yourself into this habit
now.

Some useful websites are:
https://elpais.com/
https://www.elmundo.es/
https://www.abc.es/
http://www.rtve.es/noticias/telediario-en-4/
https://www.newsinslowspanish.com/
https://www.bbc.com/mundo
http://www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/telediario/
www.cervantes.es

Over the summer, you should access at least four news items (these
can be articles or videos).

For each one, note down the date that you accessed the article, the
website and title of the article, and a few brief comments (in
Spanish) about it e.g. what it was about and your own opinion. As far
as possible, they should relate to Spanish-speaking countries.
Date Source/title Brief summary & thoughts
Task 2: Written assignment

Prepare a text of approximately 300 words in Spanish covering the following
points:
         • Information about yourself and your interests.
         • Details of what you did over the summer break.
         • Details of your plans for the future – when you leave MWS.
In this assignment you should be using past, present and future tenses, so you
may wish to refer to your GCSE class notes. Try to make your work more
interesting by using time phrases, adjectives, adverbs, intensifiers and
remember to include opinions and reasons.
Task 3: Presentation

Prepare a three minute oral presentation on any area of Hispanic culture of
interest to you. Examples may include: ‘La música latinoamericana’, ‘El fútbol
español’, ‘Estar a favor o en contra de las corridas de toros’. It would be helpful
to have some visuals to support your presentation, although there is no need
to spend a lot of time making a Powerpoint. You do not need to learn it by
heart – you may use notes. It should be in Spanish.
Task 4: Grammar and Translation Work

Revise grammar using the following websites:
www.languagesonline.org.uk, www.studyspanish.com, and
www.spanishdict.com.

Then complete the grammar and translation pages of the booklet.
You may need to refer to the above websites or
www.wordreference.com when completing the tasks.
