The Pre-Prep and Prep Courier 4 BUBBLE ART Last week, Nursery Four enjoyed exploring bubble painting. The children were all keen to take part and were excited to watch the bubbles grow as they blew. The children used the bubble painting to create a pattern on an umbrella. This week the children have been exploring colour mixing. The Pre-Prep and Prep Courier 7 BUCKFAST ABBEY EXTRAVAGANZA Recently, the whole of Year 8, together with Mrs Hall-Tomkin, Mr Harley, Mrs Wells, Mr McCarthy, and Mr Roussell spent a busy but reflective day at Buckfast Abbey. We took part in the very thought provoking RE:Connect experience, where amongst other things, we were challenged to consider our views on different faiths, world poverty, the big questions, who we really are, charities and our place and role as a “global citizen”. We were really made to think about how we might, and can, shape events. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed all the activities and time within the “matrix” really flew by! We also had the unique opportunity to “interview” one of the resident monks, who follow the Rule of St. Benedict, via a superb new interactive display, entitled, “The Monastic Way”. In History we have studied the life of monks and completed role plays on the dissolution of the monasteries during the reign of Henry VIII. Buckfast Abbey was itself dissolved in 1539 and then re-founded in 1906, so pupils relished the chance to find out about monastic life in 2019. We were intrigued to hear about the history of the Rule of St Benedict and that actually, monastic life has changed remarkably little… But some monks are on Facebook and occasionally use mobile phones! This was excellent as it complimented perfectly the work we have been doing in History, centred around the dissolution of the monasteries in England between 1536- 1540. We had an opportunity to visit the beautiful abbey, entirely built by hand by six monks at the turn of the twentieth century. Buckfast is the only Abbey in the country to have been rebuilt, following its dissolution in the sixteenth century, when it fell into ruin; a remarkable achievement. There was an opportunity for quiet reflection and many pupils took the time to sit and think, or to light a candle in memory of a loved one. Finally, we took part in discussions about the role of the UN and played a game highlighting its 17 Sustainable Development Goals, such as Zero Hunger, Climate Action and Quality Education for All. During the day there was also time for a visit to the monastic gift shop, where the sweets proved very popular! My thanks to all the pupils and staff, it was a wonderful “learning outside the classroom” experience for all. Both the Abbey staff and members of the general public, complimented us on the excellent behaviour of our pupils. Joanna Hall-Tomkin Head of History CHALLENGE NURTURE INSPIRE www.tauntonschool.co.uk

The Pre-Prep and Prep Courier 9 THONE HOUSE A GRAND SLAM WEEKEND! CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE Sunday was action-packed with outside activities in the morning, including ‘Around the World’ tennis matches and the newly established ‘Football Tennis’; it seems that one of our new boarders, Haydn, is a pro at the latter! The children had a great time at Brean Splash during the afternoon with lots of laughter in the pool and more energy expended. There were some lovely moments throughout the weekend; most notably, hearing pre-bedtime tunes during Year 8 ‘Hub Time’ with the girls singing ‘A Million Dreams’ from the Greatest Showman soundtrack, accompanied by Mr Pettit on the guitar – we may or may not have captured this on film!
