Winter/Spring 2016 Home News a publication of Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home, Inc. A Spectacular Evening at Lucas Estate More than 370 guests filled Lucas Estate to celebrate the Home’s 100th Anniversary on August 20, 2015. The gala was part of a year-long celebration marking 100 years of service to children and families in Indiana. Highlights of the evening included a performance by Grammy award winning artist, Sandi Patty, and the premiere of a 32-minute film featuring moving testimonials from some of our former residents. Julia Moffitt, morning anchor on WTHR, served as Mistress of Ceremonies. Merrill Lynch Bank of America Corporation - The Searles Akers Group was the presenting sponsor and the Home remains eternally grateful for their support. The 100th Anniversary Gala was held at the Lucas Estate in Carmel. Julia Moffitt, morning anchor for WTHR, served as Mistress of Ceremonies. Julia’s hometown is Lebanon. Sandi Patty was gracious with her time during a V.I.P. reception with guests. Valerie Erskine, member of the 100th Anniversary Committee, along with her mother, Marjorie enjoyed meeting the Grammy award winning artist. Each table had its own 100th Anniversary cake decorated by Cheri Millard and her committee. Bill Kirchoff, President of the Board of Trustees from 2012- 2015 (far right) was seated with the Brandt Construction table.

Alumni from across the country gathered at Indiana United Methodist Children’s Alumni came from near and far to Home for a 100th Anniversary reunion and picnic. Former staff were also in attend the 100th Anniversary Alumni Reunion. attendance including Jim Davis, retired Executive Director, and Tom Temple, retired Director of Residential Services. As alumnus Vicki Gans stated, “We are like one big happy family. We all have so much in common and will forever love the Children’s Home and the wonderful staff.” Some of the alumni in attendance were also highlighted in the 100th Anniversary Gala film which featured their testimonials. The film is both inspirational and informative and would be appropriate for any of your Sunday school classes or UMW/UMM meetings. Honoring Tom Temple All of our group homes are named in honor of someone special. Wesley is named after John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church. Godwin is named after the Home’s founder, Miss Angie Godwin, and Coons is named after Mrs. Julietta Coons, former administrator. Temple Home for boys is named after Thomas G. Temple, retired Director of Residential Services. Tom was hired as the Home’s first Master level social worker in 1964. He retired from the Home in 1998. A dedication service led by Rev. Jared Kendall, minister of Otterbein UMC, Lebanon, was held in Tom’s honor with more than 60 people in attendance. A special plaque was presented to Tom along with a special memento made by the boys. “Tom made a positive difference in the lives of hundreds of children. We are so pleased to be able to continue to honor his lasting legacy,” stated Rich Lapinski, Executive Director. New James E. Davis School Dedicated The new state-of-the-art school was recently dedicated at Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home. A dedication service, led by our Trustee, Rev. Marsha Hutchinson, was held with more than 130 people in attendance. During the service, Dr. James E. Davis, the building’s namesake, was recognized for his outstanding service as the Home’s Executive Director from 1964 to 1995. William Sigman, facilities chair and eighteen-year board member stated, “The new school needed to meet three important criteria; safety for the children, energy efficiency and it had to be beautiful.“ The school features a cafe, gymnasium/multi-purpose room, library, outdoor plaza, seven classrooms featuring the latest technology, six therapeutic offices for counselors and a student commons. We welcome individuals and groups to tour the school. Tours may be scheduled by contacting Susan Bennett, Director of Public Relations. Angie Brown, Dean of Students, made a presentation to Dr. James E. Davis during the school dedication. Teachers and school personnel gathered before the school dedication in front of the colorful mural which features the school mascot. One of the students designed the Phoenix. Donna Sandage, pictured with her husband, John Drake, made a gift in honor of her parents. The outdoor plaza is named in honor of Edith Mae Eads and Walter Woodrow Sandage. The plaza is a beautiful setting for our youth to reflect and enjoy the fresh air.

Staff Member Receives International Recognition Duane Horstman, Trainer-Evaluator, congratulated Dwayne Voth, Assistant Family Teacher, during the Teaching Family Association Conference held in Indianapolis. Dwayne received two special recognitions for his outstanding work in the Teaching Family Model. He was named Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home “Practitioner of the Year” for his excellent work with the boys at Temple Home. Dwayne also received the Lonnie and Elaine Phillips Award which is an international recognition through the Teaching Family Association. The award recognizes an individual or couple’s outstanding contributions to both their community and the Teaching Family Model. Indiana United Methodist Children’s Home served as the host agency for the three-day conference. Agencies from across the United States, Canada and New Zealand participated in the Conference. North Central District Superintendent, Reverend Michelle Cobb, was a keynote Duane Horstman (left) and Dwayne Voth. speaker during the opening plenary. Higher Grounds Nick and Lou Ann Weyer serve as the Spiritual Life Leaders at the Home. In February, they began facilitating weekly Sunday evening services in Gress Chapel. “It’s an honor to serve the Home in this capacity,” said Nick. The chapel classroom has been transformed into a youth room/coffee house called Higher Grounds. According to Nick, “The room is a nice place for our youth and staff to gather for fellowship, prayer and Bible study. We welcome any visitors to sit down and have a cup of coffee with us, too.” The beautiful chapel, built in 1987, is also scheduled for interior renovations. Killen, CFRE, Director of Development, at 765-482-5900, ext. 106. A Peaceful Walk on the Labyrinth The Home’s 17-acre campus features a labyrinth, thanks to a grant through Lowe’s of Zionsville. Jody Lashbrook, therapist at the Home, had a vision to create a peaceful place for the girls and boys to cope with stress. “A labyrinth walk can encompass a time for prayer, reflection and joy. The majority of our youth are diagnosed with post traumatic stress disorder so walking the labyrinth is an ideal way to help youth cope with stressful days,” added Jody. Indiana United Methodist Wish Children’s Home Lists School Store The purpose of the on-grounds school store is to help emphasize the importance of being responsible. Students participate in the points program which allows them to shop in the school store. Points are based on behavior and attitude in the classroom, giving students an opportunity to “cash in” on being good students. They manage their points in an James E. Davis account similar to a checking account. Through this program, the students learn about banking, savings and credit.
