Sutton Middle School Quarter 2 7 Grade World Language th January has been a busy month in 7th grade World Language. After beginning their study of Spanish with the alphabet, numbers and colors, students are practicing classroom commands and expressions. What’s next on the agenda? We will be looking more globally at the Spanish–speaking countries and capitals around the world before we move on to getting to know people in español. Questions you might hear around the house are: ¿Cómo te llamas?, ¿Cómo estás?, ¿Cuántos años tienes?, ¿De dónde eres? and ¿Qué te gusta?. If you know some Spanish, enjoy a conversation with your 7th grader. If not, let your 7th grade student become the teacher and give you some Spanish lessons! Sutton Middle School Quarter 2 Chorus News The 7th/8th Grade Chorus was fortunate to attend The Hanover Theatre's new production of, "A Christmas Carol Reimagined" sponsored by the theatre's Education and Outreach Program. The show was made into a concise, virtual performance shown in two - 30 minute acts and conceived by the theatre's President and CEO, Troy Siebels. Students very much enjoyed the performers and the excellent staging, lighting, and socially distanced singing. It was well done! Page 5
Sutton Middle School Quarter 2 7th Grade Social Studies - From Mr. Cummins Following the completion of our unit on Ancient China, students began learning about the history of Ancient Japan. Student learned of the geography of Japan, its leaders, and the feudal system that was established. Lastly, students learned of the arts and culture of Japan while choosing a particular topic to focus on. From there, students had the chance to choose the type of project they wanted to create using various technological tools. Some of those projects are pictured below. Currently, we have begun our unit on Australia and New Zealand. We have just completed our discussion on the geography of Oceania. Students created digital postcards and Instagram posts about a particular region or landmark from this area of the world. A few examples of those are also pictured below. In addition, they took part in an Escape Room activity which covered the geography, animals, and history of Australia and New Zealand through solving puzzles and questions. Next, we will be looking at the indigenous and native people of these countries and the eventual colonization. This unit will culminate with the students working in groups to create an ABC’s of Australia and New Zealand digital book. We are looking forward to continuing this unit and seeing the books the students create! Page 6
Sutton Middle School Quarter 2 NEWS FROM WILSON READING with Ms. WOGAN...... Students in Wilson Reading class are adding to their vast knowledge of word forms and rules for decoding and spelling. They were asked to create a story or a scene/drawing using at least 10 of the current word types they are studying. This activity allowed some very creative students to showcase their writing and artistic talents. Can you find the word forms in the stories below?? OPEN SYLLABLES combined with v-c-e and closed syllables in 2 syllable words Once upon a time long, long ago, there was an ogre who lived in his own private area! And one day something bad happened. A little donkey came behind his back and scared him Page 8
Sutton Middle School Quarter 2 ( aaaaaaaaa) and then the oger looked on the other side of his shoulder and BOOM!!! there were 100 different animals and a human. But you will never believe what he did. He reached in his backpack and pulled out a yo - yo and threw it and scared them all away! And then he finally got to relax and did not have to beware for anything else. But wait, as soon as he went outside he saw a robot swimming in his pond, and he got really mad and said, "Heeeeeeeeeelp!" And then all of a sudden, the robot left (uh, that's weird?). Now, he could finally enjoy his peace and quiet so he opened his door and did not even hear one sound because the people know not to come back ever again! And so next time, if anything like that happened, he would be ready to prepare! So then he grabbed his remote and watched some t.v! And then he began to live happily ever after! Page 9
Sutton Middle School Quarter 2 By Lily Cronin (Words with an Open Syllable used: ogre, private, human, yo-yo, relax, beware, robot, prepare, remote, began) 8th Grade Science We’re currently wrapping up our astronomy unit with tides, gravity and orbital motion. In order to understand orbital motion we had to preview our physics unit by introducing Newton’s First Law of Motion: The Law of Inertia. It’s hard to imagine an object staying in motion when here on earth there are so many forces slowing things down like friction and gravity. We were able to explore and share many examples like: “one time dad had to slam on the brakes to avoid a deer and my seat belt was the only thing that stopped me from hitting the windshield”. Page 10
Sutton Middle School Quarter 2 We also explored how objects have this tendency (inertia) to remain at rest through a lab that was a variation on the classic ‘pull the tablecloth out from under the dishes’ gag. Thanks for the action shot Colton! Although not quite fast enough... Great video Charlie you did it! Inertia Lab Video Don’t worry parents I gave explicit instructions not to replicate at the dinner table! Page 11
Sutton Middle School Quarter 2 A glimpse into the Art Room with Ms. Duffy The 7th graders have been using their creative minds both in and outside of the classroom over the last few months. Their hard work and efforts are shown through the beautiful work they are creating. Students have used Monochromatic color schemes to create Picasso inspired portraits, painted under water themed projects (with water colors that Mr. Goyette went above and beyond to ensure every student would have their own set!) , and learned about Michael Volpicelli before generating their own Word Art images on Canva. Now moving on to Impressionism and acrylic paint, we started our unit off by learning that Vincent Van Gogh did NOT in fact cut off his own ear! Page 12
Sutton Middle School Quarter 2 Sixth Grade Computers with Mrs. Watts The sixth graders celebrated the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. by partaking in the National Day of Service. We made over 100 thank you cards for the frontline workers at UMass Hospital. With the help of the PTO and Whittier Farms, we were able to also deliver 100 whoopie pies to accompany the cards. The healthcare professionals were incredibly touched by the gifts. Page 13
Sutton Middle School Quarter 2 “Extreme Makeover: The Slideshow Edition” started with students choosing a topic they were passionate about, from sports (gymnastics, soccer, swimming, etc.) and animals (dogs, dolphins, and otters) to the meaning of life and Bob Ross. The amount of interest in these topics is very impressive. After students created their slideshows, they learned different techniques to make their work more effective and how to correctly cite their sources. They are now focusing on audience needs and getting their message across in a creative and meaningful way. Page 14

Sutton Middle School Quarter 2 A note from Mr. Moseley To wrap up our prehistory and early humans unit, students researched Stone Age innovations expanding on the discussions we had in class. The students then went home to create their models. The topics ranged from fire to domestication and agriculture. All students did a fantastic job and were very creative in building their models. Some students had the opportunity to present in class, while others would present over zoom. We even had some great videos and powerpoints that accompanied their presentations. Page 16
Sutton Middle School Quarter 2 STEM Class Update The 8th graders in STEM class have been working on their design projects. They identified the population they want to help, interviewed a sample of that population, and have begun designing products for them. They have made sketches and are currently building prototypes of their products. Students have also been learning about marketing and will soon develop a marketing and business plan for their products. This project will culminate with a Shark Tank-style presentation in early March. Check out some pics of our 8th graders enjoying the snow with their families and pets and helping to shovel walkways and driveways. These kids are the best!! Page 17

Stay positive despite this long, lonely winter! YOU GOT THIS!! Spring is coming soon; hang in there!! From Mrs. Zajac’s desk: It is hard to believe that we are approaching February break already! It certainly has been a challenging year for both students and staff, but we are acclimated with this type of learning and teaching. In eighth grade ELA, we are almost half way through Johnny Tremain by Esther Forbes. Students are learning how to recognize a wide variety of poetic devices and are building on their prior knowledge from civics class. In the novel, students encounter places familiar to New Englanders, Page 19
Sutton Middle School Quarter 2 such as Lexington, Charlestown, Boston, Faneuil Hall, and much more. Soon, we will come up to the Boston Tea Party and the Revolutionary War. These could make for some interesting talking points at home. From the desk of Mrs. Keddy In 6th grade science we have been learning about the structure and function of the human body. As a culminating activity of the digestive system the students made models using creative materials to represent 10 organs and processes of this system. Here are some of the best representations.
