Mexico City, Mexico Celebrating Halloween ALL OVER THE WORLD. Halloween is a holiday deeply rooted in tradition, but those traditions differ depending on where you are in the world. Here, children dress up as fictional heroes, scary monsters, fairytale princesses, or any other character that strikes their imagination, and they trick-or-treat in local neighborhoods. Elsewhere, they do things a little differently... 4 FOR MORE INFORMATION: CLICK HERE TO CALL US, OR CONTACT YOUR TRAVEL PROFESSIONAL.
IRELAND Considered the “birthplace of modern Halloween,” Ireland can trace its holiday roots all the way back to ancient Celtic and pagan rituals and a festival known as Samhain. It was believed that, during this time, the boundaries between our world and the “Otherworld” could more easily be crossed, leading to the presence of spirits, fairies, and other supernatural beings. Back then, sacred bonfires were lit to cleanse the spirits; today, Ireland still celebrates Halloween with a symbolic bonfire, traditional Irish foods, like barmbrack (fruitcake), and games. MEXICO Celebrated throughout Mexico and parts of Latin America, Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a two-day period to honor those who have passed away. It’s believed that the “Gates of Heaven” open up at midnight on October 31 to reunite the souls of children with their families on Earth for 24 hours. The following day, the souls of adults come down to join in the celebrations, which date back to ancient Pre-Columbian traditions. In-home altars are made, full of fruit, peanuts, turkey, and a special holiday bread called pan de muerto (bread of the dead). JAPAN Not all Halloween traditions have ancient origins, as is the case in Kawasaki, Japan. Only 21 years old, the Kawasaki Halloween Parade gathers nearly 4,000 costumed Halloween enthusiasts from all over the world each year. And if you think the turnout is impressive, just wait until you see the quality of the costumes—ranging from fun and flirty to downright terrifying. Participation in this global event is selective, due to strict standards and guidelines, and will cost you ¥1,000. Watching the parade, however, is free, and it’s a sight to behold. ITALY All Saints’ Day is celebrated all over the world, but in Italy, it’s a national holiday. Known as Ognissanti, this day honors the lives of saints who died for their Catholic beliefs as well as the souls of deceased family members. In the days leading up to November 1, people begin leaving fresh flowers on the graves of loved ones, old acquaintances, and even complete strangers—turning the country’s cemeteries into colorful gardens. On the day of, the streets of Italy are bare, as everyone attends Mass and joins in a feast with their families, making sure to set a place at the table for any spirits who may pay a visit. POLAND You won’t see a more beautiful sight in early November than the countless candles illuminating Poland’s graveyards on Zaduszki, the Polish version of All Saints’ Day. Why candles instead of flowers? Since the Poles believe that this is a time for the souls of the dead to return home, the candles are lit to guide their way. This day of solemn celebration culminates in a traditional evening meal of ritual bread, spoken invocations, and generational dishes such as kasza gryczana (buckwheat groats). The dead are asked to join the meal, and the first servings always go onto the empty plates reserved for the spirits.
An Ambassador Update WITH SANDRA PENARANDA Hello LCV Members, Not too long ago, I joined the Azamara family as one of your new Le Club Voyage Ambassadors, and so far, it’s been nonstop fun. From witnessing history aboard the all-new Azamara PursuitSM to planning next year’s incredible LCV Voyage, my role as Ambassador continues to bring me once-in-a-lifetime experiences and introduce me to amazing people—like you! My first experience with Azamara was one I’ll always remember, since it was aboard the Azamara Pursuit during her celebratory Naming Ceremony Voyage. There, I had the pleasure to attend the honorary LCV Breakfast and meet so many passionate members. Each one of you welcomed me with open arms, shared your stories, and made sure I felt like part of the family. I even learned the Azamara fist bump! Thank you to everyone who came out and made this historic occasion so unforgettable. I can’t wait to meet the rest of you onboard. Maybe I’ll see you on our 2019 LCV Voyage to Alaska, where we’ll eat some of the world’s freshest seafood, interact with the region’s unique indigenous culture, and go on adrenaline-seeking adventures, all while taking in Alaska’s beautiful natural landscape. I hope you join us on this 10-Night Alaska Intensive in May! Once again, thank you for making my first few months with Azamara truly special. As I continue on this journey of helping you make the most of your LCV experience, I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you—and giving you all a classic Aza fist bump. THEIR MISSION? Protect & Conserve. Since 1996, our parent corporation Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. (RCL) has honored its commitment to place a designated Environmental Officer on every ship as a way of protecting and conserving the oceans, environments, and coastal communities where we operate. At Azamara, and throughout the RCL family, we continue to do our part to help guide our industry toward more sustainable practices by promoting these efforts across all three ships. And we wouldn’t be able to do it without Pantelis Kolakis, Ashley Solari, and Wesley Fehskens onboard every voyage. We recently reached out to all three Environmental Officers to learn more about who they are, what makes them so passionate, and how everyone onboard can help. 14 FOR MORE INFORMATION: CLICK HERE TO CALL US, OR CONTACT YOUR TRAVEL PROFESSIONAL.
PANTELIS KOLAKIS Azamara Quest Q: WHAT DOES ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY MEAN TO YOU? A: Environmental sustainability is associated with high energy demands and the resulting pollution of our seas and atmosphere. Nowadays, energy is mostly produced from nonrenewable resources like oil and coal, which create harmful emissions in the environment. It is very important to use renewable energy resources and reduce these CO2 emissions as much as possible. It’s essential that everyone adapts to a more environmentally friendly culture. A large amount of waste is disposed into our oceans daily, and that’s something that needs to change. Q: WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY LIFE ONBOARD AZAMARA QUEST LOOK LIKE? A: One of the four basic principles of RCL’s Save the Waves program is that the ships remain “Above and Beyond,” which means we have to do more than what the international and local regulations require. So, I make sure all our policies and procedures are followed on a daily basis. The planning of future voyages is also important, because in order to follow these policies we have to identify areas where waste can be discharged, decide what fuel will be used, and know the ports where solid wastes can be offloaded. The Environmental Officer has to make sure that all the preventive actions are in place, all crew members are well trained, and everyone follows policy. ASHLEY SOLARI Azamara Journey Q: WHAT DOES ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY MEAN TO YOU? A: To me, environmental sustainability means working toward keeping the ocean and coastline pristine. Here on Journey, we try to find philanthropic opportunities in the ports so that we can give back. We are always looking for ways to improve upon our environmental impact as well. The current environmental state of the Earth is not great, so it is through these continuous philanthropic improvement efforts that we are trying to help. Q: WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY LIFE ONBOARD AZAMARA JOURNEY LOOK LIKE? A: My daily life onboard looks pretty different each day. I have certain things that I’m required to do, but most of the time something new pops up. Once per week I’ll have garbage offload, which takes up a good portion of my day...I like that I stay busy, though; it definitely keeps me from getting bored! WESLEY FEHSKENS Azamara Pursuit Q: WHAT DOES ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY MEAN TO YOU? A: Sustainability, to me, means sustaining the environment in which we live through recycling, clean energy, and a greater respect for the planet. I am a huge believer in leaving somewhere cleaner than when I found it. At home I try to recycle as much as possible. I’ve actually gotten my entire family to recycle! Plus, this past year I convinced my grandparents to build a solar farm on their property. It makes me happy to see others doing their part, too. My opinion is that we have one environment, so why not do our part to try to help clean it up? Q: WHAT DOES YOUR DAILY LIFE ONBOARD AZAMARA PURSUIT LOOK LIKE? A: Usually the first thing I do when I start my day is check all the record books. If anything needs to be signed, I’ll bring it to the Chief Engineer and the Captain. Once the record books are all set, I’ll do my first round of the day. My rounds consist of walking around the ship and going through the galleys, garbage room, open decks, etc. Once I’m done with that, it’s usually time to test the AWP system. After I complete all the tests required that day, my day will change depending on where we are and what port we are in. LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR EFFORTS CONNECT WITH AZAMARA CLUB CRUISES® 15
