     Appearance

Uniform should be worn with pride and we expect that parents will fully support our

and of an acceptable length- neither excessively long, nor very short. Hair must be of
one colour, which is a natural colour for hair. Girls may wear a single pair of earrings
in the lower earlobes. Simple necklaces are permitted and all students should have a
watch. Make-up and nail varnish is not permitted.

All uniform should be clearly labelled, clean and maintained in good repair.

The Role of the Tutor

Tutors play a key role in supporting students with day-to-day issues. Students will
meet with their tutors on a daily basis, usually from 8.30 – 9.00am. We recommend
that parents contact their child’s tutor in the first instance with any queries or
concerns. The tutor is best placed to direct or escalate the matter where necessary.
Tutors will email parents weekly to give feedback and to follow up on successes or
difficulties experienced.

                                                                                  9

GENERAL INFORMATION: CO-CURRICULAR

  Lunchtime Co-Curricular and After-School Clubs
All students are expected to fully engage with the Co-Curricular Lunchtime Clubs and
After-School Clubs. This is a very important part of their social, physical and mental
  development.

Lunchtime Clubs are varied in their offering and will run over 30 minute slots across
the lunchbreak. These will be advertised via tutors who will keep a note of the Clubs
their students are attending. Students will have the chance to attend a Club’s Fair in
the first weeks of the Autumn Term. They will then be asked to sign up to Clubs for
the remainder of the term. Parents are requested to inform the Club Organiser if their
child wishes to leave the Club before the end of term.

After-School Clubs are inclusive in the School fees unless otherwise advertised (this
will be a nominal cost to cover equipment and/or specialist coaching).

Students staying on for After-School Clubs will have access to a supervised homework
space before starting their chosen Club at 4.30pm. Students can also sign out of the
building and return in time for their Club, at their own arrangement. Students should
be collected from their After-School Club between 5.30 – 5.45pm. Students not
attending an After-School Club finish at 4.00pm.

Examples of Co-Curricular/ After- School Clubs run in 2020.

We are always interested to hear of new ideas for clubs and will give each one due
consideration - this is usually dependent on whether there is sufficient interest to
make it a viable activity. Students should contact their tutor in the first instance.

                                                                                     11

Students who are not staying on for an After-School Club may go home directly from
their games location (usually Hyde Park) at 3.45pm provided that parents have

PE is a non-examined subject for years 7 – 10. Every child will have one double period
  of PE each week.

  Activities

Other games activities, such as yoga, table tennis and circuit training, may be held in
the School theatre. Eton Fives is place at the Westway Sports and Fitness Centre.

Additional ‘specialist’ activities such as ice skating may be arranged throughout the
year by the PE department, and will only run provided there is sufficient interest.

These activities may incur an additional cost to cover equipment and specialist
instructors. If they are not on offer in the autumn term, they may be scheduled for
  later on in the year.

                                                                                       12

  Attendance and Registration
The School opens at 8.00am and students must arrive in time for the first
registration of the day at 8.30am. Registers will be taken by staff throughout the
day. The register will clearly record whether:

     1. the student is present
     2. the student is absent and a staff member has been reliably informed
     3. the student is absent but staff have not been reliably informed

Students in the third category must be followed up: a member of the office staff will
ring home to determine the student’s whereabouts. If your child is unable to attend
School, we ask that you please let us know via email or phone before 9.00am.

For a planned absence, please complete this form:
  https://kpssenior.fireflycloud.net/forms/absence-request

For notifying of sudden absence/illness, please contact reception on
  reception_bp@kps.co.uk or call 02076164400.

Students may leave the School premises at 4.00pm, or at 5.30pm if they are staying
  on for an After-School Club.

  Lateness
Students arriving late to School must first report to Reception so that registers may
be corrected. Parents will be notified via the Tutors if persistent lateness occurs.

                                                                                       13
Academic work and homework
A timetable will be issued to students on the first day. It will tell the student which
lesson they have, where it is, and who the teacher is. If the student loses their
timetable, the tutor or the receptionist can print another copy. Students will also have
access to the timetable and homework online via our intranet system: Firefly.

All students receive login details to Firefly during their first week. We recommend
students and parents download the Firefly for Students/parents app, using the School
code KPSSENIOR during the setup process.

All students will receive homework. If the student cannot do the homework they have
been set, they should see the subject teacher as soon as possible from when the
homework was set, to discuss this with them. Students should not wait until the
homework is due to be handed in to say they don’t understand it or are unable to do
it.

                                                                                     14
ACADEMIC SUBJECTS

  Year 7 and 8
Students in Year 7 and 8 study a total of 14 subjects. The list below shows the core
  subjects taken in years 7 & 8.
  Core Subjects

                     English Religious Studies
                     French History
                    Mandarin Geography
                   Mathematics Art
                     Science Drama
                   Computing Music
                      Latin PSHE

Students are set by ability in Maths and English, with a desired maximum class size
of 14. In Science, Modern & Ancient Languages, Art, Drama, Music and Computing,
students will not be streamed but will remain in class sizes of no more than 12. These
small classes will allow for focused and personalised learning to remain at the heart
of what is delivered at KPS, allowing teachers in practical subjects the time and space
to work closely with the students. In languages this allows for greater discussion and
paired work in the target language. In other subjects, classes are mixed ability with a
desired maximum class size of 12.

  Year 9
Students in Year 9 study a total of 12 subjects which consists of 6 core subjects and
  6 option subjects.

  Core Subjects: English
                               Mathematics
                               Biology

                               Physics
                               Computing
  Foreign Language: One of French/Mandarin/Spanish
Humanities Option: One of Geography/History/Religious Studies

                       Humanities and Art options
Students continue to study the core subjects but now have some flexibility in what
other subjects they can study. Students continue to be set by ability in maths and
English but not others. Class sizes vary depending on the uptake of options chosen
but the desired maximum remains low, at 14.
                                                                                       15

PASTORAL CARE

  Health, counselling and personal support
If a student has a personal problem, worry or concern of any kind (such as
relationships, health, anxiety etc.), they can talk to any member of staff or their tutor.
If a student would like to talk to someone other than their tutor, there are key
safeguarding members of the pastoral team available to provide support:

  • Mrs Emerton – Head of Lower School & Designated Safeguarding Lead:
         07896 176 628 - e.emerton@kps.co.uk

  • Mrs Latif - Safeguarding Officer: j.latif@kps.co.uk

  • Anne Davies - School nurse - anne.davies@astrumeducation.com

  Medical information
All families are asked to complete a medical form for their child prior to starting at
  Kensington Park School. This information will be shared with the School first aiders;
and where it is deemed necessary, all staff will be made aware of specific health-
related matters, such as severe allergies or debilitating illness.

All students have access to our staff first aiders, and there will always be a qualified
first aider on site at any time. Parents are asked not to send their child to School if
they are unwell and we follow strict rules with regards the period of absence for
students who have a contagious illness or infection. Please refer to the medical care
policy on the website for further information.

During the School day, should a student feel unwell, they will generally be advised
to wait until the end of a lesson or a break time before being sent to see a first aider
in the medical room. Parents will be telephoned by Reception or the first aider if
their child is taken ill during the day and needs to be collected. Day children who are
taken ill during the day cannot be supervised by staff for any lengthy period of time
and must be collected as soon as possible once parents have been contacted by the
  School.

                                                                                         17
Welfare and safety, including data protection
KPS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. Students
may speak to any member of staff if they have a concern. Mrs Elizabeth Emerton,
(Head of Lower School) is the Designated Safeguarding Lead for the lower School and
has ultimate responsibility in this area. Additional Safeguarding Officers will be named
at the start of term.

Equal importance is attributed to data protection. KPS will take appropriate technical
and organisational steps to ensure the security of personal data about individuals,
including policies around use of technology and devices, and access to School systems.
The School has a ‘Data Champion’ for the reporting of breaches in data security.

For further information please refer to the Safeguarding Policy (which includes
whistleblowing), and the Privacy Notice (GDPR) on the policy page of the KPS website:
www.kps.co.uk

                                                                                     18
SCHOOL RULES

We ask all our students to adhere to our School rules. The rules are expanded upon
in our School policies, which can be found on the policy page of the School website:

School opens from 8.00am. Students must arrive in time for registration with their
tutor by 8.30am every day. Students arriving after this time should register at
  Reception as being late.

Students may leave the School premises at 4.00pm, or at 6.00pm if they are staying
  on for an After-School Club.

Permission for medical appointments and absence from within the School day should
be obtained from the form tutor. When communicating or emailing the form tutor, we
would be grateful if you could copy the reception team in this these requests.

No student is allowed to be absent from School except through illness. Other forms of
leave will be considered by the Head of Lower School but only if the School believes it
to be an exceptional circumstance and is given appropriate (at least 1 week) notice.
A letter or email on this subject should be sent to the Head of Lower School, via email:
e.emerton@kps.co.uk or for the attention of the Head of Lower School via Reception:

  below the required standard.

  Behaviour
The ethos of KPS is to maintain an environment characterised by warmth, co-
operation, respect and mutual support. Diversity is celebrated and all members of the
School should flourish without fear. We seek to create an ethos of good behaviour
where all members of the community treat one another with respect, recognising that
this is the right way to behave.

An important part of being at School is building relationships and learning how to deal
with a variety of situations and challenges. Although it is often wise to wait a short
time to allow you to try and resolve things, early intervention by the School is the
most effective means of helping all concerned. Do make sure you tell your tutor or
other member of staff if someone is making you unhappy.

Kensington Park School takes a no-tolerance view on bullying, which includes physical,
sexual, emotional and cyber-bullying; you will be asked to read and agree to a student
ICT Acceptable Use Policy when you join the School.

Please refer to the School Anti-Bullying policy, Behaviour and Discipline Policy and IT
Acceptable Use/E- Safety Policy for further details.

distracting or anti-social items are strictly forbidden and must not be brought on to
the premises under any circumstances. There is a firm disciplinary framework in

                                                                                       19

Headmaster permits usage of such devices during the day except in lessons and whilst
eating in the restaurant. Electronic devices are brought in at the owner’s risk and must
be used according to the Schools’ E-Safety and Administration policy. School insurance
does not cover student personal devices.

they will use for School work and communication with teachers. This is the property

THE LAST WORD from THE HEADMASTER

Dear parents and students,

I am passionate about enabling young people to fulfil their potential and students at KPS should be
excited, challenged and inspired, and unconstrained by preconceived expectations. Our staff will
support the development of each individual child so that students acquire confidence in their own ability
and in the process discover their strengths, recognise their weaknesses and make the most of their
talents. I believe that the excellence of academic and co-curricular provision are at the heart of an
outstanding education and crucially that this is only realised if they are inextricably bound together by
strong community values and ethos. The community at Kensington Park School is centred on each
individual and the family values such as kindness, moral integrity, responsibility and a sense of service.

Life at KPS is always a partnership between the child, his or her parents, and the school. We want
parents to be part of this journey and you will be actively included in your child’s education – this is a
joint collaboration between home and school and it is key that we work together. The will enable us
all to ensure that your sons and daughters are supported appropriately at every turn and that they
feel comfortable, respected, safe and secure in their environment.

I look forward to welcoming parents and new students to our community and working together to
enable every girl and boy make the most of their natural talent.
