The Year 7 Team The Oldershaw Academy is proud of its reputation for kindness. Each pupil is treated as an individual but we are aware that the transition to secondary education is a big step for our pupils and tutors play a large part in the life of our pupils. Your child will be placed into a tutor group. These tutor groups work in a family atmosphere of mutual trust and co-operation with the tutor getting to know the group and providing stability for the children as they progress through Oldershaw. The Form Tutor will be the teacher who knows your child best and will be best known by your child. The Year 7 curriculum allows pupils to spend greater teaching time with Form Teachers and allows the pupils to settle in to their new Academy in a safe and friendly atmosphere. Form Tutors teach the Personal, Social and Health Education programme. Parents should contact their child’s Form Tutor if they are at all concerned or require information, and we have an open door policy for parents. The Year 7 tutor team is led by Miss B. Morgan who knows our primary schools really well. Miss Morgan has visited all primary schools to meet pupils and their Year 6 class teachers and the pupils will have visited Oldershaw on many occasions during Year 5 and 6. The Curriculum At Oldershaw, we believe that each pupil is entitled to an outstanding, broad and balanced curriculum designed to meet the needs of the individual. The curriculum is organised with pathways choices in Year 8 after they have followed a broad range of subjects in Year 7. They will be supported to make ‘guided choices’ to start their GCSE programme of study in Year 9. In Year 7 they will study English & Drama, Maths , Science, ICT, History, Geography, MFL, Music, DT Art & Physical Education and RE. Homework Homework is an important part of learning. At Oldershaw, we want our pupils to achieve their very best. To do this they will need to apply themselves to develop good study habits. The Academy Library is a valuable resource for pupils. It is open throughout the day and after lessons each evening. In addition, our superb ICT facilities are available for the pupils’ use every day. Accelerated Reading We passionately believe in every child’s right to enjoy the pleasure of reading as well as reap the academic benefits of good literacy. For that reason, every student at Oldershaw has 20 minutes independent reading a day following the Accelerated Reader system for which the Academy has won national awards and recognition as a Model School. At Oldershaw, all students continue to develop their reading until the day they leave in Year 11. SMSC We have a bespoke programme of study for every child’s Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Education which also encompasses British Values. This runs throughout the year and is age-group appropriate, encompassing assemblies, PSHE lessons, guest speakers, partner organisations as well as trips and extra- curricular opportunities. Gatsby Benchmark - Careers Guidance and Opportunities Oldershaw - strives to provide and develop the careers programme ensuring the New Gatsby Benchmarks for Careers Guidance are followed, this plays a key role in raising young people’s aspirations, promoting access to all career pathways. This will enable young people to develop the skills and outlook they need to achieve career wellbeing, including adaptability and resilience. Page 6 of 15
More than just lessons - Enrichment At Oldershaw, one of our aims is to give all pupils opportunities to participate fully in the life of the Academy. To enjoy a sense of achievement by developing their own particular interests and talents. Extra-curricular activities play an important part in the life of Oldershaw and the Academy offers a wide range of activities for pupils to enjoy. The Academy has a well established reputation and an excellent tradition of achievement in sport. Many pupils develop their musical talents, the Drama and Dance productions are superb involving pupils of all ages. Parents can see the high quality art work on display throughout the building. Our annual “Art Attack” exhibition is always a highlight of the year. The work of Art, Dance, Drama and Music has been recognised nationally with the award of Artsmark Gold Award. We hope that all pupils will attend at least one trip away from home with their friends and teachers. Numerous trips and visits are organised in order to provide the opportunity for pupils to gain from this kind of experience. All visits have undoubtedly enriched pupils’ educational and social experiences. We are constantly adding to the list of extra-curricular activities available at Oldershaw. We believe that they are extremely important in broadening experience and adding to the quality of education enjoyed by our pupils. Staff have organised cultural & academic visits to such places as New York, Barcelona, Paris, Holland, London, Poland, and many more European destinations. Page 7 of 15
Attendance Targeting attendance of at least 95% is very important if pupils are to take full advantage of the educational opportunities available to them at Oldershaw. Excellent attendance is the single most important factor in ensuring pupils make academic progress. School starts at 8.30am every day when children should arrive at school to meet their Form Tutor for Accelerated Reading or assembly. If your Child is ill A note signed and dated by the parent or guardian must cover any absence. This note should be given to the Form Tutor by your child on the day they return to the Academy. If your child is absent, please notify the Academy by telephone. If we do not hear from you, we will make a first day absence call to verify the reason for absence. Please still send a note when your child returns to the Academy, even if you telephoned. Absence for Medical or Dental checks It is essential that all appointments are made outside Academy hours. If this is unavoidable, a note or the appointment card should be shown to the Form Tutor or Progress Leader. All pupils must go to the office to sign out before leaving the Academy and again, on their return, to sign in. Absence for Family Holidays Families should not take holidays in term time. This seriously disrupts the education of your child and will hinder progress. Current legislation means that parents will be fined substantially if they take holidays during term time. Unauthorised Absences Pupils are deemed to have unauthorised absences if they are absent without a parent or guardian’s note, or are absent without parents knowledge. Unauthorised absence is treated as a very serious offence by the Academy. The Headteacher now has the legal power to fine parents for poor pupil attendance or in more serious cases, follow prosecution through the courts. Page 8 of 15
Home – Academy Links Pupil Progress All pupils receive regular reports which provide details of attendance, punctuality, academic progress and each pupil’s contributions to the life of the Academy. These reports are made available to parents electronically via the ParentApp. Parents Consultation Evenings Parents are invited to formal consultation meetings every year to discuss pupils’ progress with subject teachers. Dates of these meetings are published in the Academy calendar. We believe it is essential that all parents attend these meetings. Parents are encouraged to contact Progress Leaders and their Assistants or Tutors at any time during the year for help and advice. Progress Leaders & their Assistants and Tutors will not hesitate to contact parents if they feel there is a need and will arrange interviews at a mutually convenient time. Parents of pupils with special needs will be invited to meet with staff regularly. Parents should also feel free to contact the Principals or any one of the senior staff if the matter is of a more serious nature. To support communication Mr Bush & Mr Liddell have introduced a weekly Monday Parents ‘surgery’ between 3.00 & 5.30pm. Parents are welcome to contact the school office to arrange an appointment. Contact during Academy Hours All parents are asked to indicate how they can be contacted during Academy hours in the event of sickness or injury. Only limited medical attention can be given in the Academy and if a pupil is too ill to stay, you will be contacted as soon as possible. Obviously, in the event of accidents, appropriate action will be taken and you will be notified immediately. It is vital that all pupils have an emergency telephone contact number. Private Property Parents are reminded that the Academy can accept no liability for private property lost or damaged. All clothing should be clearly marked with the pupil’s name. Pupils are advised not to bring excessive amounts of money or valuable items of property to the Academy or to wear expensive outer clothing. Mobile phones are not allowed. In the unlikely event of a pupil bringing a large sum of money to the Academy, it should be entrusted to a member of staff or the Academy office for safekeeping. Page 9 of 15
Bicycles We encourage pupils to cycle to the Academy. However, pupils bring bicycles entirely at their own risk. All bicycles should be locked in the designated area and pupils must complete a “Permission and Registration” form available from Progress Leaders, giving details of the cycle and obtaining formal permission to bring it on to the premises. In order to avoid accidents, we ask that students do not ride their bikes once on the school site. Lunchtime Arrangements We are a health promoting Academy and encourage all children to eat sensibly and healthily. Water is available at break time and lunchtime for pupils to purchase and regular advice on health is provided. Pupils may have: School Lunch: The Academy has a cafeteria system which offers a wide range of healthy options and pupils can purchase a meal for approximately £2.20. Packed Lunch: Indoor and outdoor facilities are provided for packed lunch pupils. Home Lunch: Only pupils who live in close proximity to the Academy are allowed to go home for lunch. We suggest no more than ten minutes travelling time as further distances cause difficulties with punctuality. Parents wishing their child to go home for lunch should write a letter to the Progress Leader to obtain a ‘Home Dinner Pass’. Pupils are not allowed to leave the Academy premises at any point during the Academy day unless they have written permission to do so. A snack menu is also available at break time (10.35am – 10.50am) in the Spielmann canteen for all pupils Pupils are not allowed off the Academy site at lunchtime unless they have a Home Dinner Pass. Please note: This is not an exhaustive list. It is merely intended to show some examples of all black, standard, school-style shoes. If in doubt, please consult your child’s PL or APL before buying. Please don’t ask staff in local shoe shops as they only want to sell shoes and do not know our Academy policy. Organisation for Learning Your child’s academic progress is our prime concern at Oldershaw and we therefore expect all students to be fully equipped to learn. To that end, please support us by ensuring your child has the following items of equipment every day for school: An Oldershaw Academy bag: All students are expected to have an Oldershaw Academy bag with them as part of their school uniform every day.Bags should have your child’s name clearly marked on the inside and may be personalised with non-offensive tags, badges or key rings in order to allow easy identification. However, they must not have any writing, drawing or painting on them of any sort. Bags that are damaged in this way or lost must be replaced at the family’s expense from Wirral Uniform Centre in Birkenhead at an approximate cost of £15. A pen, pencil, ruler and rubber: These will be checked by PLs & APLs every morning and students will be expected to buy missing items at cost price. Additionally you may wish to provide a pencil case, sharpener, calculator, maths equipment (protractor, compass, etc) and coloured pencils, but these are not compulsory. Student Planner: This will be provided by the Academy and should be brought to school every day. It will be used to provide essential information, to record homework and to communicate with home. Form tutors will check them weekly. Mobile Phones at The Oldershaw Academy Oldershaw is a Good school achieving record GCSE results. As part of our continuing drive to raise standards we have looked at the impact of mobile phones in school on both progress and student welfare and have found them to be, on balance, detrimental to both. In line with many other schools nationally, we decided to ban mobile phones in school at all times from September 2016. We believe this decision will allow students to learn and teachers to teach free from the distractions phones often bring. Furthermore it will help reduce the misuse of social media by some students when communicating with each other. We recognise that, at times, parents may need to pass messages to their children during the school day and this can be done via our school office who will arrange for a message to be passed on. Also, should any student need to contact home, they will be permitted to use the school telephone with their Progress Leader’s permission. If any student’s phone is seen or heard in school at any time or place during the school day, the student will be asked to turn it off and hand it over to the member of staff from whom it can be collected again at 3pm. Should a student refuse to do this, it will be treated as a more serious incident in line with our existing behaviour policy. A more senior member of staff will then request the phone which will not be returned until 3pm at the end of the next school day. As ever, we greatly appreciate the support of parents in our efforts to raise standards even further at Oldershaw. Page 15 of 15
